Celibacy is hard, at least it is for me, and it is for most of the priests that I know. But sometimes hard things are worth it, like getting an education, or working a rewarding job, or staying committed to the love of your life. Something being hard doesn’t determine whether it’s good or not, and in fact, it can even indicate just how good the thing really is—because it’s hard, but still worth doing. Lots of people expected that this week the pope was going to change the rules on priestly celibacy. This would have no immediate effect on me, or Father George, or Father Reynaldo, or any of the other priests that you know. We all committed to celibacy when we were ordained; but it would allow bishops to consider or- daining already married men (with the consent of their wives). The idea is that this would help a lot in cer- tain parts of the world where priests are relatively rare and where celibacy has not been well-received by the people. But the pope didn’t do it. Now I don’t want to try and read the pope’s mind. To be honest, I don’t understand a lot of what he says and does. But if he, who has lived as a celibate priest for fifty years and who has watched close friends struggle with celibacy and leave priestly ministry because of it; if he who has had the best chance to change the rule of any pope in centuries has chosen to still retain it—there must be a good reason. Celibacy is not essential to the priesthood. Married priests and single priests have served alongside each other from the beginning. The reason most of us don’t have much experience of married priests has to do with the countries that our ancestors came from and the history of the Church in this area. But go to any big city and you’ll see Eastern Catholic priests (most of whom are married), working side-by-side with Latin priests (that’s us, almost all of whom are celibate), and it works just fine. Even here in Des Moines we have one married priest: Father Livingstone over at St. Augustin, who was a Protestant minister who converted and was or- dained as a Catholic priest. So, the question is not whether things have to be the way they are; but rather, should they be the way they are? I don’t pretend to have an answer to this, nor do I think that authentic Christian obedience demands that we simply agree with everything our superiors say. But I do know as a leader how difficult it is to make hard de- cisions, especially when it seems the whole world is pressuring you to do so, and I know that when a person does make such an unpopular decision there’s always a good reason for it. So, the pope is trying to tell us something here: about celibacy, about priesthood, and ultimately about the Christian life. For whatever else celibacy speaks to in the Church, it clearly says this: it is possible to be God’s, and to be God’s alone. Pray for your priests. Pray for priests who have left the ministry because of their struggle with celibacy. Pray for priests who have to try and balance family life and the priesthood. And pray, always and especially, for the Holy Father.
