June 6, 2021 CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION - TODAY! Everyone is invited to join our annual Corpus Christi Procession. It will take place immediately after the 11:00 a.m. Mass today. We will process with the Blessed Sacrament from church south on McVicker, then west on Seminole to Moody, then north to Milwaukee and south to Ardmore and back to church. We ask that social distancing guidelines be observed. We will end in church with Benediction. Please plan to demonstrate your devotion to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament by escorting Him through our neighborhood.
June 6, 2021 Hopefully, you can join us this Sunday for our Corpus Christi procession starting at about noon and end- ing in the church with Benediction. Jesus Christ can give us no greater gift than Himself and in this great- est of all the sacraments He has done so. The Eucharist is called the “source and summit of the Christian life” because it is Jesus Christ Himself who enables us to believe and follow Him and is also the God whom we adore and long to be with forever. You might have been wondering about the orange ribbons around the campus. They were placed to show support for Molly Morris, a six-year-old girl from St. Monica Parish who is battling kidney cancer. Please pray for her and her family. There are some transitions to discuss. We are blessed to have another seminarian with us this summer. Peter Famera will be assigned here for June and July and will help with maintenance to make a few dol- lars, but will also shadow the clergy and staff to learn more about parish life. Please pray for him and welcome him as you can. Fr. Lukas has asked the Cardinal to take a leave of absence for a year from active ministry as a priest. This is something that Fr. Lukas has been thinking and praying about for some time. His year away will be a time of discernment and prayer, but he will not be actively functioning as a priest at any parish. Fr. Lukas is taking his remaining vacation time from June 1st and will not be back for final Masses until June 22nd. We are planning a farewell for him after his last Sunday Mass on June 27th in the Auditorium after the 1:00 pm Spanish Mass. His last official day on site is June 30th. Fr. Lukas asked to have his own statement about his decision put in the June 27th bulletin, his last weekend here. I have known about Fr. Lukas’ decision for some time too, which is why we also have another priest be- ing assigned (who also speaks Spanish well). I have delayed somewhat in telling you out of respect for Fr. Lukas’ privacy. We timed things this way so that he would only have one weekend of having to ex- plain his plans to people, at his request. We can all pray for him and thank him for the year he was with us. If you can’t join us for the June 27th farewell be sure to send Fr. Lukas a kind word of support and gratitude. Especially since Fr. McCarthy’s case is still pending, we are blessed to be getting another associate pastor starting July 1st, Fr. Chris Landfried. He is a bit later of a vocation with a fascinating story that you can read on page four of this bulletin or on our website It is also a blessing that he is fluent in Spanish, having lived in Mexico for a year. He also spent the last few years assigned as a seminarian at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines. It’s also been very frustrating for all of us, including poor Fr. McCarthy, that his case hasn’t been re- solved, especially when others have been that surfaced later. This investigation into the allegation against Fr. McCarthy is an internal review that the Cardinal has ultimate say over, so, I’ve included a link here so that you can write Cardinal Cupich directly asking for him to make his decision regarding Fr. McCarthy, con- sidering the eight months they have had to review the evidence: https://www.archchicago.org/about-us/contact-the-cardinal The Lord is still risen, keep the faith! Fr. Mike
Today we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ. Let us pray for those who are hungry, malnourished and starving. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, by calling the rectory, so that together we can help those who are in need. It is Important to Finish Strong! This week we will cover the end of Mass. Following the Prayer after Communion, which is a Proper and can be sung, comes the Blessing, which is also a Proper, and can also be sung! An interesting note about the Blessing is that there are several op- tions, which mirror the idea of progressive solemnity. There's the regular Blessing, and on special occasions we get the triple Blessing. This is the one with three invocations. Finally, the Dismissal, which also has several variations. During Eastertide, we get special dismissals (with the addition of Alleluias). The number of Alleluias depends on the degree of solemnity. On the major solem- nities i.e. every day of the Easter Octave, we get two Alleluias, and on the other days we get just the one. After this, the priest reverences the altar and Mass is over. The end. But wait, what about the Recessional?!?!? Well, it is not part of Mass (which ends with the priest’s veneration of the altar) though it does function to escort the priest back down to us, and as a final communal act of thanksgiving. Since it is not part of the Mass, there is no prescribed text so we select hymns that are related to the Mass of the day, or perhaps to the season/time of year (Marian in May, Sacred Heart in June, St. Joseph in March etc.) or to a secular observance of great importance (Independence Day, Veterans Day, etc.). And just like that, we have made it through the entire Mass, albeit in quite an abbreviated man- ner. I hope you have found this series to be informative and enriching of your faith life. I en- courage you to continue to delve deeper into the Mass. It is the source and summit of Catholic life, and it is so important to orient our lives toward it. As one of my greatest teachers said, two people will grow in love with each other proportionately to how much they grow in mutual love of something “other”. I pray that you let your love of our Blessed Lord and His sacrifice at the altar be that which helps you grow to greater love of God our Father. St. Cecilia, St. Elizabeth of the Trinity…Pray for us! --Mark Wozniczka, Music Director (mwozniczka@archchicago.org) St. Elizabeth family, Praised be Jesus Christ! I wanted to let you all know that, through prayerful discernment and spiritual direction, I have decided to dis- cern out of the Archdiocese of Chicago and enter the novitiate with the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius. A persistent call to religious life and the vows, the community of brothers and priests, and their charism of re- storing the sacred have caused me to have confidence, peace, and joy that this is the next step for my vocation- al journey. The process is that I will become Br. Marko as I enter the community and (God-willing) Fr. Marko after completing the novitiate and my seminary formation. Practically speaking, this means I will no longer be serving at St. Elizabeth’s, as my full attention will be re- quired of my new community. I will certainly miss ministering at St. Elizabeth’s and teaching the religious education Confirmation class. The Lord has truly blessed my time in the Archdiocese and at St. Elizabeth with you all. I will forever be grateful for your friendship and your witness to me. I genuinely look forward to our relationships continuing even if the circumstances are different. If you ever find yourself at St. John Cantius, please say hi! I want to thank Fr. Mike, Fr. Lukas, and you all for making St. Elizabeth my home for the past year. I also want to assure you of my prayers as I humbly ask for yours as well as I make this transition. Looking forward to building our Lord's universal Church together as aspiring saints! “If you are what you should be, you will set the world on fire.” – St. Catherine Siena In Christ, Marko Culjak
William Grady, child of Steven & Suzanne (Schroeder) Martin I was born and raised in a northern Virginia suburb of Washington, DC, the youngest of four. I was baptized Methodist and attended church every Sunday because mom sang in the choir. My grandmother lived with us and spoiled me well. Her example of daily prayer and reading Scrip- ture greatly influenced and inspired me and continues with me still. Prior to Seminary I had careers in mortgage finance and real estate property re- hab and management. After high school, I moved to Los Angeles, California, then lived for a year in Zacatecas, Mexico, becoming fluent in Spanish and, though I had stopped attending church for years, was drawn to the Catholic Church. Then I had a job transfer to Chicago and started attending Mass with friends. Out of simple curiosity to understand more about the Catho- lic Church, I attended RCIA. I continued the journey and was received into the Catholic Church at a beautiful Easter Vigil. From there, there has been no looking back... My discernment was a gradual growth in the faith and discovering the possibility of a voca- tion to the priesthood. During time in Eucharistic Adoration at my parish, I started asking God questions about discernment. Dedication to discernment and prayer, seminary studies and for- mation, and internships as a hospital chaplain and at parishes, have all helped to affirm and con- firm the vocation. My journey has included the parishes of St. Philomena, St. Genevieve, St. Viator, and St. Bartholomew, before Seminary. During seminary I have been assigned to Most Blessed Trinity (Waukegan), Transfiguration (Wauconda), St. Joseph (Libertyville), St Gall (southside), and then finally the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe (Des Plaines) for the last three years. All these have been a wonderful opportunity to experience a wide range of parishes and a wonderful blessing to experience the beauty of our Catholic family, all connected and interconnected – one large family in our diversity and in our unity. There have many amazing priests, religious, and faithful friends and family, who were instrumental in my discernment and following the call to this vocation. Their example, faith, and encouragement inspired me, and continue to sustain me and this vocation. Let us remember each other in prayer. May God bless and protect you and yours, always. Father Christopher Landfried (Fr. Chris will officially begin his assignment at St. Elizabeth on July 1)
Seeking Member Nominations for the Newly Forming Parish Council The Parish Pastoral Council is an advisory and implementing body that acts as a source of guidance to the Pastor. The purpose of the parish council is to foster full participation of the entire parish in the life and mission of the parish and of the Universal Church. Councils offer what no expert can offer: perspective on what is right for a particular parish. The work of a parish council is to discern how the Lord is calling the parish to fulfill its mission of making disciples, fostering the unity of its members, and continuing the Lord’s work in the world. Every recommendation from the council should be made with the parish mission in mind. Council members serve for a three-year term which may be extended for an additional three-year term. You may nominate yourself or another parishioner who you believe has the leadership qualities and interest to serve St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish. Ideally, we will have a council with nine total members, three coming from each of the legacy parishes. A nominee should be: - A baptized/confirmed Catholic - A registered member of Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish - Actively engaged in the prayer and sacramental life of the Church - Willing to attend a monthly meeting and other special events as needed - Open to sharing opinions in a group setting and consider differing viewpoints - Committed to furthering the mission of Christ at Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish All nominees will be contacted by the parish and invited to attend an evening of discernment, prayer, and orientation where the expectations of the council and membership will be more fully explained. The council members will be chosen from the pool of qualified nominees who have accepted their nomination. Timeline: The goal is to have the nomination process completed by June 18th. The orientation meet- ing will be held in church on Monday, June 28th at 6:30 pm, It will be recorded as well. The meeting will be facilitated by Sara Pekar from the Vicariate II Office and me and won’t last more than an hour. God bless, Fr.
