Why are we here today? • To explain the purpose of the Legion and our five year strategy • To bring to life the strategy and explain relevance/potential impact on us • To point to useful information • To provide opportunity to ask questions and provide comments
Our Purpose In conjunction with the new 5 year strategy, we developed a purpose statement with input from trustees, staff, the general public & members. What We’re Here For The Legion is at the heart of a national network that supports our Armed Forces community through thick and thin - ensuring their unique contribution is never forgotten. We’ve been here since 1921. We’ll be here as long they need us.
Our strategy Inspired by those we serve our strategy will provide the breadth, depth and quality of service they deserve and remember our Armed Forces and their families To achieve this we must collaborate better across our organisation, our membership and with other charities.

Our purpose – 7 ambitions Our Examples of what will this mean over the next 5 years ambitions Information, • Implement the Veteran’s Gateway – “Check Point” – a first point of contact Advice and on information and advice for the veterans community. Support • Improve the process by how grants for those we support are assessed and awarded and encourage Branches to offer financial support for payment of grants. • Rebrand our Break Centres, equip Area Managers to champion break centres and grow the number of breaks by a third to c. 15000 a year. • Review and improve the quality of how casework is managed and delivered. • Improve the quality of advocacy and advice to those we support in financial capability, independent living and outreach to the most vulnerable and increase the number of support by c. 70% to 50000 a year. • Define and pilot services to tackle social isolation. • Increase the reach of the current care services to more people to help them stay independent as long as possible and open two new care homes
Our purpose – 7 ambitions Our ambitions Examples of what will this mean over the next 5 years Advocacy and • Maintain relationships with national decision makers and continue to Campaigning advocate the Legion and the Armed Forces Community. • Build capability to effectively advocate and campaign at regional and local levels. • Increase the number supporters willing to advocate and campaign for TRBL. • Improve how research is identified, undertaken and results shared across the Legion. Remembrance • Commemorate the end of the First World War in 2018 and define the legacy to take forward from this. • Increase participation in remembrance among young people and under-represented groups. • Provide a digital means for people to participate in Remembrance.
Our purpose – 7 ambitions Our ambitions Examples of what will this mean over the next 5 years Membership • Set a membership purpose that maintains sense of comradeship for existing members and attracts and grows younger members. • Increase membership involvement in supporting services to the Armed Forces Community , remembrance, fundraising and other events and activities. • Increase retention and grow membership using existing and new methods in the digital space. Fundraising • Use technology to support cashless giving for the Poppy Appeal. • Increase awareness, giving and information about supporters during Remembrance. • Develop fundraising products outside of Remembrance period. • Ensure our people and processes treat all our supporters with respect and dignity, in line with our fundraising promise.

Central services, • Developing a shared understanding of purpose and strategy with Marketing and staff, volunteers and across the membership. organisational • Identifying and implementing changes to our values and capability behaviours needed to deliver our purpose and to improve collaboration and excellence in our work in the best possible way with all parties. • Delivering improvements in central services to better support our main areas of work e.g. through new financial systems and better use of information technology . • Developing our people’s skills.
