Why learn French? • French is, along with English, the only language spoken on all five continents • More than 220 million people speak French on all the five continents. • A career asset • The ability to speak both French and English is an advantage for finding a job with the many multinational companies using French as their working language, in a wide range of sectors. France, as the world’s fifth biggest economy and a major exporter in Europe, attracts entrepreneurs, researchers and the cream of foreign students. • An international language • Since Brexit, French is now the top language used within the EU. French is both a working language and an official language of the United Nations, UNESCO, NATO, the International Olympic Committee, the International Red Cross and international courts. • An advantage for studying in France or a French speaking country. • Speaking French opens up opportunities for higher education at some of France’s best-known universities or elite grandes écoles, often on very favourable financial terms. Students with a good level of French may be eligible to apply for a French government.

WSFC French The Structure • 4 lessons a week (60 mins) • 15 mins weekly with a teacher in a group of 2 people to practice the oral component and get extra support (10 mins one-to-one sessions in Year 2) • Exams in the second year (May/ June) Paper 1 - Listening, Reading, Translation into English Paper 2 - Translation into the target language. Writing piece on the film studied Paper 3 - Speaking (on the topics studied)
