Open Wide Our Hearts Summer Series Who Is our neighbor? Matthew 22:34-40 “When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together and one of them tested him by asking, ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” Every person is a child of God and that makes each of us part of a human family was well. Jesus gave us a commandment to love one another, but sometimes we don’t live up to that commandment and hurt others with our actions and words, and when we hurt others we hurt Jesus. Reflection Questions: This Week’s Readings at Mass • What did Jesus mean when he said to love your neighbor as yourself? Willing to Touch • Who are our neighbors? • Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24 - God’s justice and its rejection • Why should we love our neighbors? by the wicked. As a family, talk about the importance of recognizing that • 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15 - Liberal giving our relationships with our families, and communities are • Mark 5:21-43 - The daughter of Jairus; the woman with a ways we show our love for God. With COVD, our contact hemorrhage with our neighbors became very limited in order, to keep everyone safe. Is there a neighbor who could use a loving gesture, such as a note that you are thinking of them? Questions of the Week Think of ways as a family that you can show your neighbors 1. The woman with the hemorrhage showed a lot of courage in that you are thinking of them. breaking Jewish laws to approach Jesus in a crowd to touch him. Whom do you know who has dared to do what is right Pray together as a family: even if it meant breaking the law (church or secular)? Loving God, Give each of us a joyful and open heart toward 2. Who are the “untouchables” in our society today - the ones our neighbor. Even if we have differences or difficulties, we don’t like to be too close to? How might we be called to help us to set them aside and give us a generous heart move out of our comfort zones to reach out to them? toward them. Give us opportunities to help and encourage our neighbor and seek to get to know them and recognize our similarities and not focus on our differences.
