          Before January March
The Hamiota Community Centre (HCC) has long been a central facility in
our community. The board is continually working to maintain and improve the
facility to provide future benefits to the community.
The HCC Board developed a 2-phase plan to make enhancements to the
inside of the community centre. The current focus is renovating the kitchen as
you can see from the pictures. RR Smith Construction commenced working on
the kitchen in January and it is wonderful to see the progress. The kitchen
improvements will include updated equipment, electrical services, cabinets,
countertops, external façade, and flooring. This will modernize the look of the
kitchen space, provide modern equipment for food preparation and cooking,
and provide the electrical capacity that is needed.
This project was made possible because of grant funding. The HCC
board applied for the “Building Sustainable Communities Program” (BSCP)
grant and fortunately they were successful. The BSCP grant provides funding
for 50% of the total project and in addition the board received grant funding
April from the Hamiota Community Foundation and Thomas Sill Foundation.
The updates to the kitchen will refresh the building and make it much
more user friendly when hosting different events.

                                Hamiota Minor Ball
A noticeable change that you will see at the baseball canteen this year will be the addition of a patio deck
for the barbecue area. Hamiota Minor Ball was very fortunate and grateful to receive grant funding to go
towards the patio from the Hamiota Community Foundation. Hamiota Minor Ball also received grant funding
from Baseball Manitoba and Community Futures Westman. Grant assistance like these assist organizations
significantly. Thanks!

                                                                                                                  1

Hamiota Fire Department
In February of 2021 the Hamiota Fire Department received notification that we would be receiving
$160,064.00 in funds through the Manitoba Fire Protection Fund Grant Program to put toward the purchase
of some much needed equipment.
The funds were awarded toward 3 specific projects.
1. The purchase of 10 new Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), 20 Air cylinders and individual masks
for each of our firefighters. This was a particularly large win for the department as we have been working
toward this goal for about 2 years. For health reasons we felt that individual masks for our firefighters was a
must. We are thankful to be able to finally have this ability. The funds awarded to this project were
$106,270.00
2. The purchase of 16 sets of dual purpose Wildland/Vehicle Ex turnout gear, helmets, goggles, boots, and
respirators. This equipment is beneficial to the firefighters as it is much lighter and cooler than the structural
gear we currently wear. Heat exhaustion is one of the largest health concerns during fire ground operations
and life/health is priority one. It is also a much more cost efficient to replace than a set of turnout gear if it
gets damaged during
Vehicle Extrication operations. The funds awarded to this project were $19,920.00
3. The purchase of a side by side (UTV) and fire skid unit for grass fires. A 2021 Polaris Ranger XP was
purchased and should arrive as early as May 7th. A 65 Gallon fire skid with foam capability was ordered for the
back of the UTV and we should receive it around the start of May as well. This unit will be a great asset when
fighting grass, brush and field fires as well as allow us to broaden our scope of service in the future. The funds
awarded to this project were $33,874.00

The Hamiota Fire Department would
like to thank the Provincial
Government for releasing almost 9
million dollars back into the province
through the Manitoba Fire Protection
Fund Grant Program, our Municipal
council members for their support
toward applying for these grants, CAO
Tristan Urquart and Deputy Fire Chief
Ron Dale for their time and attention
to detail when filling out all of those
applications. Also the “committee” of
fire department officers that worked
together to determine what suited our
needs best, pull in quotes and make
it happen in a short period of time.

Sincerely,
Josh

Hi-Way Collision
We are a small family owned and operated auto body shop, established in 1984 by siblings Karen Northam and
Eric Belcher. Karen and Eric moved back from Calgary after Eric received his red seal in auto body, purchasing
the shop from Eric Brown. In 1986 a 500 square foot office and paint mix room was added on. In 1996 a 2000
square foot addition was added on with a semi down draft paint booth. Then in 2018 Eric’s three children
Morgan, Brady and Travis became part owners buying out Karen. Morgan works in the office while Brady and
Travis are red seal motor vehicle body repairers. Brady began working here in 2010, Travis 2011 and Morgan in
2018 taking over Karen’s position. We currently
employ two full time staff, Sean Schweitzer and
Brooke Leys. Sean started in 2015 still in high school
under the apprenticeship program and is working
towards getting his third level. Brooke began in 2016
working in the office, answering phones, doing
paperwork and is a great asset to the team.

We are Autopac accredited, do Direct Repairs and
most recently became Ford aluminum certified. Some
of the other services we offer are plastic welding,
windshield repairs and replacements, towing, body-
work, painting, aftermarket parts and accessories.

We are grateful for all the support over the 37 years
and look forward to doing business with you in the
future!

In April's report mention was made of Hamiota Lions' efforts to raisie $3000.00 for dog guides via the Virtual Walk

pressive 400km. Here is a message from Allan: 'We’re raising money for a cause close to our team’s heart and
would love your support. Did you know that it costs approximately $25,000 to breed, train and place Dog Guides
with Canadians with disabilities? And did you know that they are provided at no cost? Lions Foundation of Canada
Dog Guides is accredited at a national and international level and does not receive any government funding, so they
need our support to continue to provide these life-changing Dog Guides! Join me and my team Hamiota Lions Club

help add on kilometres so that together, we can walk across Canada in support of Dog Guides! Thanks so much for
your support!'
Please note there was a mistake in the link that appeared in April's Leader. This has now been corrected.

A moment for families from Pastor Orland
“For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow,
for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
” James 1:3-4 (NLT)
This is a great Bible verse to give us perspective in the trying times in which we are living. Further restrictions have
forced us to live with different routines and are causing all kinds of stress and mental health concerns. This can be
very unsettling. It is during these trying times that we can get to know God more intimately because we know that He
is there to help us in our time of need. Psalm 62:5 NLT says ‘5 Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope
is in him.” We can hope in the Lord because we know that Jesus is coming back. That is when he will make all things
right and if you are a follower of Jesus, you will spend all of eternity with Him. While we wait for the return of the Lord,
we should allow this adversity to make us stronger spiritually. We are encouraged to let the problems and difficulties
in this life develop endurance so that we can become more like Christ in our character. While we endure trials, God is
doing a work in us. So, take time to rest in the Lord. You may have moments where you feel like you are falling apart
but stop and take time to rest in the Lord. Turn to His Word and His promises. You will be encouraged and
strengthened!
Till next month,
Pastor Orland

Premier's Volunteer Service Recognition Award
Jan Skayman has been a daily volunteer at Hamiota Elementary School for 21 years and this makes her a
most worthy recipient of the Premier's Volunteer Service Recognition Award! Jan has been the epitome of the word,
volunteer, as she has continually given her time, heart and energy to the benefit and betterment of both the Grade 3
classroom and our school.
In 1999, Jan was looking for a "little something to do" after retiring from her administrative position at the
local RCMP detachment. She started coming three mornings a week for a 1/2 hour or so, but soon decided that
wasn't nearly enough time! Shortly after, it became daily, for the first half of the morning and the rest is history! The
list of Mrs. Skayman's contributions to our classroom is lengthy - reading, correcting, organizing homework, helping
to manage the Senior Buddy Program, to name a few; but it should also be noted that she's been
game for anything we've needed within the school...photocopying, keeping track of forms and
money, and even facing the enthusiastic crowds pouring through the doors at our annual
Christmas concert!
Jan's cheery conversations and heartfelt interest in students' daily lives have been
important to at least 400 children over the years! Beyond the classroom she has often attended
their extra-curricular events, such as hockey and baseball games and dance recitals.
She once said that the volunteer gig was her "kickstart" to the day, but we would venture to
say that Mrs. Skayman is the one who has given our days a little "kickstart" over the years, with a
pleasant morning greeting, a question about the score of last's night's game, or maybe the odd

Even Covid restrictions have not kept Mrs. Skayman down! This year, she has been a faith-
ful "Zoom Reader" with the Grade 3 students and she has continued to correct and organize work for us, all from
the comfort of her living room!
Staff and students at Hamiota Elementary are so thankful for the many contributions Jan has made to our
school over the last 21 years and would like to congratulate her on receiving this most deserving award!

                                             Distinguished Teacher Award
Each year, Brandon University awards its Distinguished Teacher Awards to teachers who have
inspired students in their school to succeed and continue their education. I am proud to say
that one of this year's recipients is from Hamiota Elementary School. Penny Dixon has been a
mainstay at HES for many years, inspiring many students to go on and do wonderful things and
is a most deserving recipient of this award. This award will be bestowed at Brandon
University’s Spring Convocation ceremonies. Congratulations Penny!

                                     Hamiota Youth in Philanthropy Group
The Hamiota Youth in Philanthropy Group is proud to announce the recipients of our grants! This year, The
Kenton Community Foundation received partial funding for rebuilding components at the dam, and the Arts Council
received funding for their after school youth programs. The Hamiota Sports complex also received full funding to
replace parts of the audio system at the rink. We would like to thank all of the applicants, and we can’t wait to see
what these projects and programs have to offer for youth in our communities!

                                                     Rural Week
Rural Week is a one week learning experience for all first year medical students
enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Rural Week
provides an opportunity for the students to get first-hand experience and exposure
to not just rural and northern medicine, but to rural and northern life. It is an
opportunity for participating communities to showcase themselves and promote
the opportunities and benefits of rural and northern medicine. Rural Week is a
core component of the Med 1 curriculum. The experience is planned to provide all
first year medical students with a rural based clinical and community experience.
Catherine Giffin (left) & Emelissa Valcourt (right) will be in Hamiota from May 24-28.
