2021 Parent Guide Kennolyn has been family owned and operated since 1946. This is our 75th year! Day Camp programs take place on our private 240 acres of redwood forest overlooking Monterey Bay. We are accredited by the American Camp Association, which means we meet or exceed over 300 program and safety standards, and we have a long-standing reputation of exceptional care and commitment to youth development. Like all Kennolyn programs, Day Camp 2021 is a traditional, structured camp designed to foster emotional, social, and physical growth in each camper. Every aspect of our program takes into consideration the current health guidelines and the safety of our campers and staff. Our program allows campers to enjoy the seclusion and magic of the Kennolyn property with access to forests, fields, swimming pool and miles and miles of trails. Each session will be filled with a variety of fun and engaging group activities, special theme days and loads of memory making experiences. Program and activity safety protocols are in place, and monitored consistently, based on the most recent health and safety standards. Day Camp 2021 provides a much-needed respite for children this summer. With the cancellation of in-person school and the shelter in place orders we have all been living under, we believe kids need camp more than ever. Spending the day outside with positive, caring, role models and other excited kids will provide the opportunity for our campers to enjoy the summer and feel like kids again!! Campers at Kennolyn Day Camp 2021 will: Spend the days outside enjoying the fresh air and open spaces. Participate in a variety of camp activities and events. Meet new friends and practice being part of a social group again. Re-train their brain to follow schedules, camp protocols and group routines. Put down the technology that has been even more prevalent in their lives lately. Be active and engaged in new things (or old things they have not done in a while) Practice intentional inclusion, kindness, and respect for others Gain a feeling of independence. Relax, be a kid and have some good ‘ole summer camp fun! 1
Kennolyn Counselors Great counselors make for a great summer! Our counselors are well trained in the best practices of youth development and camper safety. Many are past campers or returning counselors who love camp and are excited to provide a wonderful experience for their campers. Each counselor has been chosen because of their skills, job experience, and character, to provide a caring, consistent, safe, and fun summer for each child. Activity Groups Campers are placed in stable groups of 12-15, according to their grade and age. Groups may contain one or two grade levels, depending on enrollment and are co-ed. Each group will have 2-3 counselors that will remain with them for the entire session. This stable group provides a 6/7:1 camper to counselor ratio, which is supplemented by administration, activity specialists, and a registered nurse or EMT to provide medical assistance when needed. Face coverings will be worn in accordance with State and local guidelines in place at the time. There will be times, such as lunch when physical distancing will be in place. Each group will be separate from other groups except at the swimming pool when two groups will swim. The highest risk for transmission is within each group and on the bus. Parents should be completely comfortable with this level of risk. Each group will have their own outdoor Home Base area to eat lunch and store their belongings. Hand washing stations will be available in key areas along with our normal restrooms. Counselors will carry hand sanitizer for when a hand washing station is not convenient. Note on Group Requests We do our best to honor group requests, and families must understand we have a limit on group size. Requests must be submitted on the Group Request Form in your online Kennolyn account. If the request cannot be fulfilled, we will reach out to you ahead of time to avoid any surprises on opening day. No group changes will be possible or allowed during the session. Daily Schedule Overview 8:45-9:15 Parent Drop-off- When families arrive, they are met by camp staff and follow check-in protocol. Campers leave the car after morning checks, meet their group, and get ready to begin the day. Busses Arrive-campers have already gone through the check-in protocol and are directed to their group area where a counselor is waiting. 9:15 Morning Announcements-Groups remain in their designated areas to hear the daily schedule, sing a few songs and prep for a super day! 9:25 Morning Activity Periods-Groups have three activities before lunch. 12:25-1:40 Lunch-Groups meet at their Home Base to eat and do some low-key activities. 2
1:40-3:45 Afternoon Activity Periods- Groups have two activities after lunch. 3:45 Closing Circle- We all meet on the blacktop (socially distanced of course) to hear end of the day announcements, recognize camper achievements, sing silly songs and get excited about the tomorrow! 4:00 Busses depart/Parent pick-up at camp-Bus campers board their buses and all others gather with their counselor to await parent pick-up. PLEASE REMEMBER: CAMP ENDS AT 3:00 on Fridays! Camp Activities Day Camp 2021 offers a wide range of exciting, well-organized outdoor activities designed to take advantage of our beautiful 240-acre private forest property. Activity planning focuses on camper safety, skill development, group cooperation, and fun! Groups have an opportunity to participate in each activity multiple times per session. Some activity periods allow for individual choice within the group, so campers may choose what they like best in that period. Our counselors guide and encourage campers throughout the day and make sure hand washing or sanitizing is happening often! Adventure Town (our cool forest play-space) Archery Arts & Crafts Ball Sports Climbing Wall (grades 3+) Counselor Choice Fencing (grades 3+) Outdoor Adventure (nature hikes, fort-building, forest exploring, and more) Outdoor Cooking (build a fire and make a delicious treat) Play Station (ping pong, box hockey, table games, jump rope, four-square, and more) Riflery (grades 3+) Ropes Course (grades 5+) Skits and songs Swimming Water World (water inflatables and games) A note about Swimming Certified lifeguards are on duty to ensure campers are safe and will practice social distancing unless an emergency arises. Counselors will be in the pool and available for help if needed. Campers start each week with a safety swim so the lifeguards can assess their skill level and see where they can swim in the pool safely. Campers change in individual changing tents, located near the pool area. Suits and towels should be brought to camp each week. We aim to make all campers feel comfortable at camp. We require campers and staff to wear one-piece bathing suits at camp and we recommend a UV swim top or rash guard. No bikinis or tankinis please. 3
Adventure Town Counselors will visit Adventure Town during training and will learn about all the fun activities that can happen in our own little forest playground. Campers love playing in forts, chilling in hammocks, and exploring the many wonders of this special place. This provides an opportunity to connect with nature and for the group to be creative. Archery and Riflery Safety and knowledge are of the utmost importance in this program. Counselors are trained to safely lead both archery and riflery. Our program starts with safety and moves through various stages of marksmanship. Campers of all ages learn to fine-tune their motor skills and increase their powers of concentration in these activities. Riflery can be controversial with our staff and families. While we are alarmed by gun violence in our country, we believe in teaching campers' proper safety and etiquette. It also reinforces the concept of sports and marksmanship-think Olympic biathlon. Additionally, it is an excellent way to practice breathing and concentration. Most campers lack impulse control, and these sports provide a fun way to build those skills! Animal Care A small group of animals (goats, guinea pigs, chickens etc.) live at camp during the summer. Campers will visit them during this activity and learn how to interact with the animals in a respectful and caring way. Feeding, clean-up, grooming and general knowledge of each animal will be taught. Counselors will be trained to lead Animal Care activities. Arts and Crafts A variety of arts and crafts projects are offered during each session. Counselors are introduced to pre-planned projects during training and may also add projects based on camper interest. Friendship bracelets and lanyards are a camp favorite and always available. Ball Sports Campers can play independently or counselors can organize group games or tournaments. Basketball, soccer, hockey, gaga, 9-square and Kennolyn’s own happy shiny fun ball are camp favorites! Climbing Wall, Low Ropes and High Ropes All campers are eligible to use Low Ropes, Climbing are for grades 3+, and High Ropes are for grades 5+. These activities are led by specialists and group counselors will be trained to support the specialists and help campers as needed. Low Ropes focuses on team building on elements low to the ground. Campers learn to “spot” each other and take turns as they get through the course as a team. Those spotting skills transfer well to climbing both at Kennolyn and on real rock. Our Climbing wall has four routes and is similar to an indoor climbing gym. Our trained staff belay while other campers are a part of the “belay chain” as they start to learn the many steps of safe climbing. High Ropes is run on a continuous belay system were campers are teathered to wires up n the trees and navigate their way through various elements like the balance log and zip line. The week ends with the Giant Swing. This is for thrill seekers only and is not for everyone (BUT MOST ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT). Like all of our activities we practice “challenge by choice”. Campers choose how much to push their comfort zones and are applauded no matter how far they go. They set their goals and we help them reach them. 4
Fencing (grades 3+) This exciting activity will be led by specialists. Group counselors are involved in supporting the specialists and helping campers as needed during the activity. Outdoor Adventure Our redwood forest offers a wonderful environment for campers to learn more about nature. Outdoor Adventure takes place in various areas of camp and includes activities like hiking, animal tracking, frog counting, bug collection and more! Counselors will hike some of our favorite trails during training and learn the stories and folklore that matches each place. Big Tree, Wishing Tree, and Kennachauns are all part of the experience! Outdoor Cooking Counselors will be trained to teach fire-building skills and prepare a variety of treats over the open fire. S’mores, cinnamon apples, and orange cake are some camper favorites! Songs and Skits We sing all the time at camp and it is important for counselors to be enthusiastic and involved when we sing. Don’t just walk to an activity, sing a song along the way! Groups also perform skits on stage and counselors should be ready and able to help facilitate the fun! YouTube and TikTok are great inspiration (if its K-rated). Swimming & Pool Time Swimming is a camp favorite! Certified lifeguards are on duty to ensure campers are safe and will practice social distancing unless an emergency arises. Counselors are expected to get in the water with their campers. Campers start each session with a safety swim so the lifeguards can assess their skill level and see where they can safely swim in the pool. Activity Supplies and Equipment We will provide all the necessary equipment for Camp activities. No personal sports or activity equipment will be allowed at Camp. Friday Fun Day Every Friday has a theme and campers are encouraged to dress-up and join in the fun! Groups will choose their favorite activities, and everything will be a little different and a little more FUN because of the Friday theme. We will end the day all together (distanced of course) for some super silly skits, announcements, and songs! PLEASE REMEMBER: CAMP ENDS AT 3:00 on FRIDAYS! Camper Behavior Guidelines Camp is a relaxed and pleasant place for kids to explore and learn. At camp we take a “we can work this out” approach when we address behavior that is not acceptable. Campers will work with the group counselors to make an agreement that helps define standards of behavior that are in everyone’s best interest. 5
Safety standards and cleanliness protocols MUST be adhered to strictly for everyone’s protection. Refusal to comply or blatant disregard for safety protocol will be taken very seriously. With that in mind… We treat everyone with kindness and respect. We follow the directions of counselors and staff. We are honest in all situations, especially when we make a mistake. We follow all safety and cleanliness protocols. We do not use bad language. If disputes arise, we talk it out, walk away or ask for help from a counselor. Using physical means to solve a problem is never OK. We are not violent in words, actions, or attitude towards others. Threats of harm to yourself or others will be dealt with seriously. We show respect by saying please, thank you and you’re welcome. What to Bring to Camp Each day the campers should wear athletic type shoes and comfortable play clothes. We recommend layering clothes with sweatshirts to start the day and t-shirts and hats to finish the day. Each camper needs a backpack at camp each day with: Two protective face coverings (wear one, keep one in your backpack) Lunch and snacks (no food provided by the camp) There is no option to refrigerate or reheat camper food. Please pack a hearty lunch and snacks (campers are always hungry)! Bus riders please pack a snack to eat before getting on the bus. Water bottle (campers can refill throughout the day) Sunscreen (please apply thoroughly before leaving home too!) Hat/visor/cap Swimsuit (one piece for girls please) UV shirts are highly recommended for all. Towel Flip flops to walk to and from the pool. Camp is a fun outdoor adventure where campers get dirty, and things get lost. Please mark all clothes and belongings with your camper’s full name. Please do not send things that are valuable or sentimental. Protective Face Coverings All campers wear a mask or protective face covering upon arrival to camp and carry an extra in their backpack. Masks will be worn unless campers are eating, swimming, or participating in strenuous activities (ex: long hike on a hot day). Counselors will ensure social distancing guidelines are followed when campers are not masked. 6
Dress Code Kennolyn is a wonderful place for children to discover, embrace and express themselves. We lead an active lifestyle here at Kennolyn and we ask that campers where clothing that supports outdoor play and exploration. Thus we ask everyone to follow a simple dress code so that clothing is not a focus. If a camper does arrive with inappropriate attire, we will work with the camper and family to make sure they get replacement clothes suitable for camp. Please make sure to include your camper in discussions about what they will wear to camp. Feel free to ask questions at any time. ‘K’ rated DRESS CODE FOR ALL CAMPERS Wear T-shirts and shorts/pants/leggings Clothing must cover camper’s undergarments. Shorts must cover camper’s bottom completely at all times (including while seated and while climbing in a harness). Pool time: we recommend UV swim shirts for all campers and staff. Girls – one piece athletic style bathing suits only. No bikinis, tankinis or cut out swimsuits. Boys - regular swim shorts only. No Speedo-type swim briefs. No spaghetti straps, halter tops or low necklines. Tank top straps must be at least 2“ wide No exposed midriffs (shirts should reach the top of pants) No excessively low-rise pants or see-through clothing Logos / images on clothes must not show or advocate drugs, alcohol or tobacco, or be sexual or political in nature No gang, goth, grunge or style of dress representing a particular group, affiliation or identifiable sub-culture Keep jewelry to an absolute minimum and leave expensive jewelry at home. Kennolyn cannot be held responsible for jewelry that is lost or stolen Nothing may be worn in any pierced body part except for ears (1 earring per ear, no dangling jewelry - too dangerous!) Long hair must be kept tied back from breakfast through dinner for safety/hygiene reasons No hanging chains on the outside of clothing for safety reasons Proper footwear required at all times with socks - sneakers or athletic shoes for most activities (except riding, for which boots and helmets are supplied). Many campers like to wear crocs. These are acceptable as long as a foot strap is worn. Crocs cannot be worn while on our ropes course or climbing wall. Sandals, flip flops or Crocs can be worn ONLY to and from the pool. Our terrain is hilly, stubbed toes and falls are avoidable hazards! Leave expensive or formal clothes at home. We get dirty! Camp is a place to be your authentic self, so make-up should be kept to a minimum 7
Lunch and Snacks All campers must bring lunch and snacks from home and campers are asked not to share food. We do not have refrigeration, nor can campers heat up their food. Please pack lunches appropriately. Campers wash their hands before and after snack/lunch and eat at their designated lunch area with their counselors. Snack is a short break to refuel and head out to the next activity. Lunch is a relaxing time for campers and staff to eat, chat, play and get ready for the rest of their day. All campers are encouraged to take as much time as they need to eat lunch and when they are done can play cards, make friendship bracelets, read a book, journal, have a game of catch or just chill until the next activity period. Lost & Found Please contact us about any lost items and we will do our best to find them. Please remember to mark all belonging with your child’s first and last name. Picture Day Tuesday is Picture Day. We take group pictures the first Tuesday of each session – helping us all remember how much FUN camp is! Photographers will practice social distancing while pictures are taken. The Pictures are available for $11 and are sent home with the camper the last day of the session. Camp T-shirts are passed out right before the pictures. If your camper comes home with a shirt that does not fit well, please let us know. And remember to mark their names in their shirts. Bus Transportation Bus transportation is offered from Campbell, Los Gatos, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Soquel, and Aptos. A full list of our bus stops, fees and locations are listed on our website. A yellow school bus with a Kennolyn Sign on it will be driving your campers to Kennolyn. Each bus will have two or more staff members in a Kennolyn Shirt there to check your camper on the bus and ride with them to camp. At the end of the day the same counselor will check your camper out to you when they arrive at the bus stop. Please pull into the designated area at your bus stop and park your car. For your child’s safety please walk your camper to the Kennolyn bus counselor. The Bus Counselor knows where the bus is pulling up and will be waiting in a safe location with campers to the side of where the bus pulls up. Please wear your mask and allow for appropriate distance as the counselor checks-in your camper. You will be asked the Health Screening questions, and your child’s temperature will be taken. If a child has a temperature exceeding 100.4, they will not be allowed to board the bus. When the bus arrives, the counselor will double check the campers as they are boarding the bus. The Counselors will then make sure all the campers take the appropriate seat (they will be assigned by family and camp group). Once everyone is on, seated, and seat belts fastened, the bus will leave. The bus will only wait 5 minutes after the departure time for any late campers. 8
Once on board the staff will go over the bus rules with the campers. Please take a minute to review the bus rules below with your camper before the first day of camp. Please be at the bus stop at the designated pick-up time. Counselors will ask your name and check ID’s when a child is picked up. If nobody is there to meet a camper, the bus will wait 5 minutes before proceeding to the next stop. A parent running late can drive to the next scheduled stop to meet their camper. If the bus reaches the end of the route, a counselor will wait for up to 15 minutes for a parent to arrive. In this case, a $20 fee is charged to the parent’s account. Eventually, a camper will be returned to camp and wait with camp staff for a parent. In this case, a $50 fee is charged to the parent’s account. If the bus is running late or we have any changes to the route we will notify you via our Kennolyn App (see App information below). No changes in drop-off or pick-up location can be allowed during a session. Riding a bus is an awesome part of camp. We hope to make it as fun and safe as possible! Bus rules to review with your camper 1. Sit in your seat with the seat belt fastened properly. 2. Always wear your mask (sorry, no eating or drinking). 3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself. 4. Do not put anything out of the bus windows. 5. Be kind to all campers and staff. 6. Use an inside voice while on the bus. 7. Refrain from throwing objects in/out of the bus and on the bus. 8. Sit in your pre-assigned seat for safety. 9. Campers will be assigned to sit with either a member of their household or social bubble or with someone from their camp group. 10. The Camp Director will call home if a camper is not following the rules on the bus. Parent Drop Off /Pick Up The gate will open shortly before arrival time at 8:45am and 4:00pm. Driving the 25mph speed limit, it takes about 10 minutes to drive from the town of Soquel to Kennolyn. Please drive safely and respect our camp neighbors on Glen Haven Road. Cars will be met by camp staff to administer health check procedures before the camper may exit the car. Per Santa Cruz County Health Department, to help limit exposure, parents may not leave the car while on camp property. Please prepare your camper for this before the first day of camp. As you are welcomed, campers will be asked to get out of your vehicle and stand near the side of the car. The temp checks will be done outside of the car. Nobody else can leave the vehicle. BACKPACKS must be in the car with the camper, not in the trunk. There are sometimes campers on some days who may be unwilling to leave the car. This is natural. In a normal year we would help coax a reluctant camper to join their group. In the 9
unique circumstances that we are all facing, we cannot do that, at least not up close. You will be directed to a parking spot where you can talk to your camper until they exit the car and join the group. You will not be allowed to walk them into camp. Pick-Up-4:00pm For those driving their campers, on the first morning of each session, each family will receive a CAMP PLACARD with the name of your child. Please place the placard in your window. Camp Staff will radio the appropriate counselors and the camper will be sent to the pick-up area. To help limit exposure parents may not leave the car while on camp property. Picking up early or dropping off late To protect our health protocols, we discourage late drop off or early pick-up from camp. If you must, we can only allow late drop-off or early pick-up at lunch time (12:25-1:40). Please inform us of your intention as soon as you are aware of the change. Campers will be escorted to the pick-up area by Leadership staff. Parents may not leave the car when on camp property. 10
HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICIES Day Camp has a nurse or EMT every day of the week and there are also nurses on site at the Overnight Camp. Our Health Center offers a bright and cheerful retreat, where our nurses can take care of the most common camp ailments, including minor scrapes and bruises, fatigue, etc. Sometimes, the only necessary medicine is a place to sit quietly for a few minutes or a chat with a caring nurse. In such cases, we will not automatically contact you, unless we feel there is a specific need to do so. Nurses will always provide care for campers with social distance and masking requirements in mind. At this time, no camp provider, including Kennolyn, can guarantee that your child will not contract or be exposed to COVID-19. If you choose to send your child to camp, you are doing so with the understanding that there is a potential risk of exposure. We ran camp successfully in 2020 with zero COVID-19 cases. We hope to have the same success in 2021. It takes a combined effort from camp administrators, medical staff, support staff, counselors, parents and campers to ensure the health and safety of all participants is protected. Our leadership and nursing staff are fully COVID vaccinated, and we hope to do the same with our staff as they are hired. Minor Ouches at Camp All counselors are trained by the Health Center staff in basic camp first aid and may care for campers who need band-aids, ice packs, to rest or sit out of activities etc. Health care staff will always be available to advise counselors and all medical actions will be reported to and logged by health staff. Health Forms & Medications For the continued safety of each camper, new and up-to-date Health History forms are required every year. Campers may not participate in our program without one. We expect any medications that your child may need will be given by you at home. If you have an exception to this, please contact us to discuss. Participation Guidelines Campers and staff who are immunosuppressed (as defined by their medical professional) or live in a home with an immunosuppressed person should not consider participation in camp during these extraordinary circumstances. Participation in a camp program during this pandemic has too high a risk factor. If you have any concerns about this policy, please contact us to set up a time to talk with our medical team. We also ask that all parents consider the following question when deciding to enroll their child: “Can my child reliably follow verbal directions from staff that enforce social distancing at camp.” In other words, can your child follow simple verbal directions, given in English. Accommodations may be provided as needed, and requests for such accommodation need to be made known to camp staff at least 7 days before the camp session. 11
Intake Screening and Assessment Upon your arrival to camp or your bus stop, your camper will be asked a series of questions and have their temperature taken. Temperature of each participant must not be higher than 38°C/100.4°F. By strict County Health Department protocols your camper will be excluded from camp if we record a temp above these limits. Exclusion and Reentry into Camp Your child should not attend camp when they have any of the following symptoms: Temperature higher than 38°C/100.4°F Fever or chills Cough Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing Fatigue Muscle or body aches Headache New loss of taste or smell Sore throat Congestion or runny nose Nausea or vomiting Diarrhea These are potential symptoms of COVID 19 and other contagious ailments. For the safety of Kennolyn staff, volunteers and other participants, please keep your child home if they have any of these symptoms. Your child will be screened, and temperature checked each morning before they join their group. They will not be permitted to stay if they have any of the above symptoms. If at any time during camp they have any of these symptoms, they will be isolated in the nursing cottage for you to pick them up within one hour of our call. If your child experiences any one single symptom from this list, they should be free of this symptom for 24 hours, without medication, before returning to camp. If your camper experiences a temperature higher than 38°C/100.4°F with any one or more of these other symptoms we must assume that COVID 19 is a possibility, and their reentry is only possible with a negative COVID 19 test. We recognize these protocols are extreme and may result in a child being excluded from camp because of allergies or some other simple ailment, however we must exercise extreme precaution to protect our campers, staff and our greater community! It is important for parents to know when a child is too sick to attend camp. COVID-19 like symptoms are not the only illness that would cause a camper to stay home from camp. A child who is sick will not be able to function well/safely at camp and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. Your child should not be sent to camp hoping that they will feel better after arriving. The following are CDC guidelines for keeping children at home. 12
Your child should be kept home following a nighttime bout of nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea and watched for further symptoms for at least 24 hours after the last bout. If your child is sick and cannot attend camp, you will receive a 50% credit towards next summer equal to the number of days missed. Your child should remain home if he/she has had a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher. A child should have a normal temperature for 24 hours without fever reducing medicines before returning to camp. Whooping Cough: exclude from camp until 5 days from start of appropriate antimicrobial treatment. Pink Eye: 24 hours after initiation of antibiotic treatment. Strep Throat: 24 hours after initiation of antibiotic treatment and no fever for 24 hours without fever reducing medicines. Lice: Until treated with a pediculicidal agent. Seven days after treatment a health care provider or camp nurse shall re-examine for infestation. Chicken Pox: Six days from the outbreak of the last crop of blisters with all pox marks dried. Unexplained rashes (if your child has other symptoms like cough, runny nose, sore throat, and/or fever) Impetigo, scabies or ringworm: Until judged non-infectious by the physician or 24 hours after initiation of treatment. We do not have the space to keep an ill child for an entire day, nor is it safe to other campers and staff. Please call the Office and request to talk with the nurse on duty if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for understanding and helping us keep all campers healthy. If your child is sick and cannot attend camp, you can receive a 50% credit towards next summer equal to the number of days missed. Camper-to-Staff Communication One of the beauties of enhanced communication technologies is the ease with which people can stay in touch. However, there are concerns that must be included in any policy regarding contact between campers and staff outside of camp. We do not endorse or encourage staff to build personal relationships with campers outside of camp. Any effort to build such a relationship should be instigated by the camper and not the staff member and be done with the approval and supervision of the camper’s parents. We vouch for our staff when they are in the controlled environment that we create at camp. We cannot control their behavior outside of their period of employment with us. Please make sure that you are aware of any contact or correspondence between your child and any member of our camp staff. If you want to discuss any concerns with us at any time, please contact one of our directors. 13
Camper-to-Camper Communication Collecting phone numbers/social media usernames/addresses and promising to stay in touch is one of the time-honored rituals of summer camp. However, with so much instant communication we must be more careful about how our children use the contact information they collect. We encourage parents to be aware always of a child’s computer use. We want our campers to be safe on the Internet. Here is the best advice we have found about how to educate your child to respond to inappropriate communications. If you receive a threatening e-mail, IM or message—one that is mocking, uses vulgar or harassing language—here is what we tell campers they should do: Tell your parents or a trusted adult! Do not respond to the message or retaliate. If possible, save the message to your hard drive or an external drive. Print out a copy of the message, then close it but do not delete it. Tell your parents about it and have them decide what to do next. They may notify the local authorities. Parents-If you suspect that the sender of the messages is someone connected to Kennolyn, please contact us immediately. 14
ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES Camp Attendance If you know that your campers will miss a day of camp, please call the Day Camp Office in advance 831.479.6714 Ext. 450 Attendance is taken in the morning by group counselors. We collect group attendance and call any campers that is not at camp to confirm that campers are not coming to camp that day this ensures all the campers are in the right place. Deposit & Refund Policy May 1, 2021 is the last date to withdraw from camp and receive a rollover credit to next Summer. The last date to receive a refund was March 1, 2021. There are a very few minor exceptions to our policy of no rollovers after May 1, 2021. If a camper or member of their household tests positive for COVID in the two weeks leading up to their session, that camper should not attend camp and a 50% credit towards a future Summer will be issued. If a camper exhibits COVID-like symptoms in the days leading up to the session starting, you and/or your doctor may decide it is unwise to attend camp. In this case, a 50% credit to a future summer will be issued. If a camper exhibits COVID symptoms at camp, that camper will be quarantined and returned to parental care. In the event a camper does go home in this scenario, a 50% credit of the lost days at camp will be issued. If another child or a staff member in your camper’s group tests positive for COVID, the positive person will not be able to return to camp until they have completed the quarantine protocols in place at that time. You will be notified if such a circumstance occurs. You would not have to keep your camper home, camp is able to continue. However, if you should choose to withdraw your camper in this circumstance, a 50% credit of the lost days at camp will be issued. Our county public health department would be contacted in these circumstances and might impose additional restrictions. If there is a more significant COVID outbreak across numerous groups or if we are forced to close or restrict activities by any government entity, our Force Majeure clause will come into effect. Changing Sessions and Cancellation Policy In every program offered by Kennolyn, refunds will not be provided if: • Your camper is dismissed from camp. We reserve the right to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all campers and to dismiss a camper, without refund, for misconduct or unsociable behavior, as determined by the Directors. • You choose to withdraw a camper for any reason before the child has completed the entire session in which enrolled. • You do not submit a complete state required health form by the required due date. 15
Helpful Hint Although the program cannot be compared to a simple day care program, camp tuition can be claimed as a day care tax deduction. Camp-to-Parent Communication Email – Kelly & Dan will send regular emails. Watch for those for reminders. Add daycamp@kennolyn.com to your contacts now to make sure those don’t bounce. Kennolyn App – We post photos each session and use an app to push out mass communication in case of emergency or if a bus is running late.
