What is the York County Beautification Committee? The York County Beautification Committee (YCBC) was established by the York County Board of Supervisors on December 16, 1976, to “promote a cleaner, more attractive York County and increase awareness of environmental issues among York County citizens.” Since that time,YCBC members have worked tirelessly to conduct litter prevention, beautification, and environmental awareness programs in order to fulfill that purpose. In April 2012, through the work of the YCBC, the Board of Supervisors, was presented with a Certificate of Affiliation with the Keep America Beautiful organization. Affiliation with this program not only brings national recognition, but enhances the existing efforts of the YCBC, as well as provide access to educational materials and grant funding. (For additional information on Keep America Beautiful, Inc., and its mission to find solutions for beautifying communities, please visit www.kab.org) In 2019, the YCBC will attend Yorktown Market Days, participate in other environmentally focused programs, and will be planting its very own Monarch butterfly garden at the Waste Management Center. The focus throughout the year will be conserving and protecting our waterways, incorporating the use of native plants in our January Meetings December 2018 gardening, and keeping the environment clean Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat of litter, by recycling often and recycling January 2 — Board of Supervisors, YH @ 6pm right! Recycling Right In addition to the curbside garbage collection service that York County offers residents, a curbside recycling program also is available. Recycling saves natural resources AND disposal dollars by diverting waste from the garbage stream! Many recyclable materials, such as plastic bottles and aluminum cans, never make it into the recycling bins and end up in the trash or even our waterways. These items, when recycled properly, can reduce the amount of waste in landfills and our precious water. Some materials can even be recycled over and over again, so it is important to recycle all materials that can be recycled right. Likewise, when the wrong items are placed in the bins, they can contaminate the entire load of materials. Boxes with food residue, cans that still contain liquid, and oil or grease can cause a load of recyclables to be disposed of as waste instead. Plastic bags in the recycling load can cause serious damage to the machinery used to separate materials. “Wishful Recycling” behavior (tossing items into the recycling that are not acceptable items with the hope that they could be recycled) should be changed to include only those items that are acceptable through the curbside program. Please visit www.yorkcounty.gov/ wastemanagement to view all acceptable items in our curbside recycling program. Make sure materials to be recycled are clean, February Meetings January 2019 dry, and free of food and drink residue. Team Up to Clean Up, Adopt-A-Spot York County is a beautiful place to live, work, and play! One way to keep it that way is for everyone to work together to prevent litter from being disposed of on the ground, in our waterways, and on our roadways. Cigarette butts, plastic drink bottles, and fast food containers are all items that have been found during local cleanup events. Each York County resident can do their part to clean up the community, but wouldn’t it also be fun to clean up with a group? The YCBC encourages the “Team Up to Clean Up” approach to litter control and prevention, and participates in events such as the Great American Cleanup, Clean the Bay Day, and the International Coastal Cleanup. The County will provide cleanup materials (bags, safety vests, etc.), and will waive any fees that may be incurred for the disposal of garbage and recyclables at the York County Waste Management Center (provided information has been given at least one week prior to the cleanup.) The Adopt-A-Spot pr ogr am is another way individuals and groups can play an active and ongoing role in beautifying, cleaning, and maintaining York County’s public spaces, to include creeks and storm drains. Keeping specific locations free of litter, graffiti, and weeds, are some of the beautification efforts included in Adopt-A-Spot. Hurricane Season June – November York County has about 230 miles of tidal shoreline, and can be accessed by several waterways to include the York River, the Poquoson River, and the Chesapeake Bay. It is important that citizens are prepared for the risks associated with major storm events that may affect this area, and are prepared to act on those preparations when officials alert the community. Before the Storm: Know Your Zone: www.knowyourzoneva.org to find out whether you live in an evacuation zone, and what to do if that zone is alerted of a pending weather event. Sign up for York Alert on the County website: www.yorkcounty.gov/yorkalert. York Alert is an Emergency Notification System that allows the County to provide you with alerts before, during and/or following an emergency/disaster by calling your telephone, cell phone and/or sending text messages to you. Be Prepared: Visit www.ready.gov for an emergency supply kit checklist and other safety tips. Know Your Flood Risks: Discuss insurance needs with your homeowner’s insurance company (most homeowner’s policies do not cover flood damage or include flood insurance). Visit www.floodsmart.gov for more information about flood insurance. In the event of a flood, follow these basic safety tips: Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Mosquito Control: Fight the Bite! Due to its abundance of marshes and waterfront property, York County is a prime breeding environment for woodland and salt marsh mosquitoes. These vectors breed in standing water, and just a small amount of water is all it takes to breed dozens of mosquitoes. The best way to control the mosquito population is to stop it in the beginning of its lifecycle. York County Mosquito Control expends great effort in treating local standing water pools, both natural and manmade. Mosquitoes not only cause painful and itchy bites, but they are also infectious disease carriers and can become quite dangerous if left unchecked. Humans and animals alike can be affected by mosquitoes that cause suffering from conditions such as West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), and heartworms in dogs and cats. Tip & Toss Inspect your yard at least once a week to locate and empty any areas that may contain standing water. This includes children’s toys, wading pools, buckets, wheelbarrows, tarps, yard equipment, garbage cans and lids, birdbaths and gutters/downspouts. Drain or treat unused swimming pools. Abandoned or unused pools can produce countless mosquitoes. Do not litter! Roadside litter is a major contributor to any local mosquito population. When water fills up discarded plastic bottles and caps, plastic lids, and other containers, it creates an optimal, undisturbed breeding location for these pesky insects. Cleaning up litter in your community helps control the population before it gets out of hand. Only Rain Down the Storm Drain The York County Stormwater Division is responsible for monitoring and protecting the County’s stormwater health and preventing contamination from illicit discharge. Special attention is paid to controlling the amount of contaminants and sediment that flows into our abundant waterways. Stormwater runoff does not flow to a water treatment plant; it flows directly into our waterways. Pollution from untreated stormwater runoff affects drinking water supplies, recreation, fisheries and wildlife. Pet waste, litter, oil, fertilizers, and sediment can all cause contaminated water that is incapable of producing a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Many of the County’s activities involve public waterways, such as the York and Poquoson Rivers, and in order for them to remain unpolluted, we all must do our part to control what goes into the storm drains. Throw cigarette butts in proper trash cans or disposal containers. Use the proper amount of fertilizer for your yard. Stormwater runs over lawns and picks up excess fertilizer, contaminating the water. Pick up pet waste and dispose in the garbage. Follow proper disposal processes when disposing of sewage boat holding tanks. Clean up leaks and spills from automobiles quickly and use drip pans when performing automotive work. The Water Cycle: Keeping it Clean and Avoiding F.O.G. Buildup Did you know that the average person uses between 80 – 100 gallons of water a day? Showering, drinking, flushing the toilet, and cooking are all some of the ways we use water every single day. So it is very important that we appreciate the value of clean water, and do our part to protect and conserve it. Things we can do for a cleaner water cycle: Dispose of used motor oil properly: Take used oil to a proper disposal location or to a chemical collections event. Don’t flush medications: Take unused, unneeded, or expired medications to a local Drug Takeback event. Don’t flush wipes: Even if they claim to be “flushable”. Avoid F.O.G. down the drain: F.O.G. isn’t a dreary weather event when we’re talking water… Fats, Oils, and Gr ease build up in sanitary sewer drains contribute to half of the blockages seen in systems around Hampton Roads. In addition to cooking oil and cooking grease, F.O.G. includes: Meat fats and food scraps Lard/shortening, butter, margarine Dairy products Batters, icing, dressings and sauces Dispose of F.O.G. properly by canning the grease in an empty, heat safe container (this can October Meetings be frozen, then thrown in the garbage), scraping September 2019 plates into the trash before rinsing, and catching October 1 — Beautification Committee, PW @ 6pm grease or food residue in sink strainers or October 1 — Board of Supervisors, YH @ 6pm Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat baskets. Leaf Collection Program Leaves typically are collected during the months of November through January. During this time, York County residents who reside on publicly maintained streets or roads can place an unlimited number of clear bags of leaves at the front roadside for collection every other week. Residents who live in private communities or on privately maintained streets or roads may bring leaves to the closest public roadway for collection. In addition, ALL RESIDENTS may bring leaves year-round to the VPPSA Compost Facility located at 145 Goodwin Neck Road, Monday through Saturday, 8am—4pm. For leaf collection purposes, the County is divided into two zones: The Northern Zone includes all homes on and north of Dare Road, including neighborhoods along Wolf Trap Road, Goodwin Neck Road, and homes in and near Marlbank, Edgehill, Queens Lake, Hubbard's Lane, Skimino, and Lightfoot. The Southern Zone includes all homes south of Dare Road, including neighborhoods in Grafton, Tabb, Brandywine, Coventry, Kiln Creek, Calthrop Neck, Running Man, and Cary's Chapel Road area. Go Green for the Holidays! Did you know that the average household waste increases 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve? Here are some fun and easy ways that you can Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle to make your holidays more sustainable, saving energy and resources! Buy local: Look for a Christmas tree and holidays foods that were grown locally; less distance means less fuel was used to transport them. Decorate with LED lights: This energy- efficient option will make your holidays brighter! Give back to your local community: Give the gift of local attractions or events in the form of gift cards or certificates. Support your own community while saving fuel, packaging, and the expense of travel. Use the nice dishes: Use washable dishes and utensils instead of disposable plates, utensils, and cups. Remember to scrape those plates to avoid F.O.G. buildup! Don’t forget your bags: Always remember to take your reusable bags when you go shopping to avoid using plastic bags (keep them in the car so they’re always handy!) Remember, the YCBC collects plastic bags and one-time use plastic wraps to participate in the Trex Recycling Challenge.
