Northeastern School District October 8, 2021 Third graders at Mount Wolf have been reading a story about a girl who volunteers an act of kindness to help make her com- munity a better place. Students decided that it would be fun to volunteer and help make our school a better place. They of- fered to join Miss Wendy, Miss Deb, Miss Kim, and Mr. Eric to help clean up the cafeteria after lunch one day this week. Wow! A lot of work sure goes into keeping our school clean! Sweeping, wiping, sanitizing, washing, folding, and organizing, they were busy volunteering and asking for nothing in return— except the satisfaction of being a good community helper!
Funday Friday Flashlight Style at Conewago Elementary Students in Mrs. Wolff's second grade class enjoyed a Funday Friday, complete with flashlights! Students fished for snacks and counted the number in their pack. Then they proved that their number was either odd or even! Students made desk tents and used flashlights to read in their tents. We played a flashlight scavenger hunt game as we hunted for welded words around the room! We crammed in a morning round of Show and Tell and enjoyed eating together in our classroom! Funday Fridays are FANTASTIC!
Recently, the NMS Green Team students had the opportunity to participate in an interactive activity called Be Washington. Students had the chance to step into the boots of General Washington to see if they would lead as he did.
Students in Mrs. Lumsargis’s 4th Grade class at Shallow Brook enjoyed a day of pumpkin fun! Students started the day measuring pumpkins using metric and customary measurement systems and learned the meaning of circumference. Then they wrote stories from the perspective of a pumpkin in the patch trying to convince cus- tomers not to pick and carve them! Finally, to end the day, the class “disguised” their pumpkins as M&Ms, wa- termelons, cats, potatoes, super heroes, and many other awesome creations to “hide” from being a pumpkin! Thank you to Farmer Dan for generously donating the pumpkins to Room 109! It was a great kick-off to fall! At York Haven Elementary, we emphasize that each child is unique, special, and the only “YOU” in the whole wide world! Often children ask – but what about twins? YES - - even if you are a twin! This year we are lucky to have five sets of twins in our school. Each child is unique and special!
A Mt. Wolf third grader used her TRACKS cards to purchase a classroom read aloud in Mrs. Worthington’s kin- dergarten class. She did an incredible job and the students loved hearing her read! The High School Cross Country Team participated in the 28th Annual Carlisle Invitational and the Whippet Invitational in the last weeks. Teams from multiple states, including Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia, participated in the Carlisle Invitational. Five of our Bobcats received medals for finishing in the top twenty. Cole Perry, Bella Treglia, Marissa Pritchett medaled in the Challenge Race. Rebekah Wertz and Sier- ra Blaker medaled in the Junior Varsity race. Cole Perry, Bella Treglia, Marissa Pritchett and Haylie Kurilla finished in the top ten for the Varsity Whippet Invitational Race. The varsity girls team, Bella Treglia, Maris- sa Pritchett, Haylie Kurilla, Riley Bell, Rylie Kurilla, Rebekah Wertz, and Sierra Blaker, finished first overall.
Eagle Fire Company Visits Mt. Wolf Thanks to Mr. Johnson and the crew from Eagle Fire Company for visiting Mt. Wolf on Monday! They braved the rain to talk to the kids about the sights they would see and sounds they would hear if there was a fire at their house. Thanks for helping keep our Bobcats safe! Mackenzie Miller and Ryan Schick both per- formed at the Rotary Club of York's annual show "Rave Reviews" at the Belmont Thea- ter this week. Mackenzie performed in a tap duet to "Another Day of Sun," from La La Land. Ryan performed a cello solo-William Walton: "Concerto for Cello-1st movement."
Sixth grade students at Spring Forge have been learning about Newton's Laws of Motion and Potential/Kinetic Energy in science class. Prior to the egg drop challenge, students went through each of Newton's three laws and identified how dropping an egg related to the law. Students also discussed when there was potential energy in the egg and kinetic energy in the egg. This week students worked to build their egg drop challenge device. We will report back next week the results of the challenge! Alivia was ALL SMILES when she saw her teacher, Mrs. Kipp, cheering her on at her recent soccer game!
Choo! Choo! After reading a story about trains, Mrs. Forry’s first graders completed their first STEM challenge. The challenge was to construct their own train using only four index cards, four candies, two straws, four pieces of tape, and scissors. Our Cats reaped the benefit of creative thinking with unique rides!!! Ryan Shick, NHS senior cellist, was chosen for two unique performing op- portunities. Ryan was selected by the York Symphony Orchestra to perform in a master class with Philadelphia Orchestra principal cellist, Hai-Ye Ni. Ryan was also recommended by another local violin teacher to perform a cello solo at the Rotary Club of York's annual show "Rave Reviews" at the Belmont Theater. Congratulations to Ryan on his outstanding performances!
Mrs. McWilliams and her 5th grade class at Shallow Brook Intermediate put into practice what they learned about the ways climate and resources affected Native American life. They used their information to plan, de- sign, and construct Native American shelters from different regions of the country. Some very creative models were developed!
There were quite a few little teachers in Mrs. Cable's class this week for “Dress Like a Teacher” Spirit Day at Conewago Elementary. Some of the sixth graders at Shallow Brook Intermediate love a pink spirit day!
Kindergarten students at Orendorf Elementary were visited by the local firefighters to learn about fire preven- tion. Thanks to our community partners at the Fire Station for helping to teach us!
