SAHS GATE – September 2020 We hope your school year is off to a great start! The SAHS Gifted Education (GATE) Department is committed to providing you with resources and opportunities that will help you to reach beyond the classroom. For the start of the 2020/2021 academic school year, available opportunities will be presented in virtual format via the GATE Google Classroom. To join, please use the code oifupyq. We will be doing all we can to provide you with outlets to further develop and showcase your talents. and to grow academically! New opportunities arise regularly. Here’s a look at what you can get involved in now. Be sure to pay attention to the Google classroom updates so you don’t miss out on new exciting events! We are working on some in-house activities run by the GATE teachers. In the meantime, please check out these opportunities. Students in grades 9-12 are invited to The University of Pittsburgh Society of Women Engineers Virtual Engineering Workshop. This workshop is an ongoing program that will take place on Saturdays, September 12, 2020 to October 24, 2020 from 10:00AM-12:00PM. Throughout this workshop, students will comprehensively learn about the various engineering disciplines offered at Pitt through hands-on activities that challenge their problem solving and critical L ea rn a bo u t va ri ou s en g in eeri n g di sci pl in es thinking skills. They will also be able to engage in panel discussions with professional and student engineers to learn o p po rtun i t i es a nd pan el d i sc u ssio n s! about various career pathways that engineers can take! Lastly, attendees will be able to develop mentorships with collegiate members of SWE and learn more about what types of classes engineers typically take and other opportunities Pitt engineers take part in such as co-ops and study abroad. In addition, on October 3, 2020 from 10:00AM-12:00PM, E mai l instead of a workshop for students, they will be hosting a parent program for the parents of our high school participants. This program will consist of a presentation on 'Why Engineering is a Good Career Choice', a presentation on First Year Engineering at Pitt, and a Q&A panel with Pitt engineering students, Pitt engineering alumni and a first year engineering advisor. FC Hacks On November 13-14, 2020, Fox Chapel Area High School will host the very first all-virtual 24-hour Hackathon in Western PA. Students in grades 7-12 are invited to compete. There will be three divisions All-virtual 24hr hackathon for the competition to allow for beginners, for Open to all secondary school students anywhere Compete in Programming or Hardware divisions students who may not have access to hardware, and Develop a mobile app, computer program, or for experienced hackers. The National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing (AiC) honors all students who self-identify as women, genderqueer, or non-binary in grades 9-12 who are active and interested in computing and technology, and encourages them to pursue their passions.
