“The human contribution is the essential ingredient. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live.” ~ Ethel Percy Andrus Thank you for volunteering! Welcome to Lien Elementary School! Dear Volunteer, Thank you so much for volunteering in our school. You are such a valued part of our school family! I know your time in our school will be very rewarding for you, and it will be a tremendous help to the students and staff of Lien. This volunteer letter will serve as a reference guide to help make your volunteer experience rewarding and successful. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Prior to volunteering, you must complete a background check. Please turn in the “search requestor copy” form, page 7, to any office in the district. This form will authorize the school district to complete a background check which is a standard procedure for all staff hired in our district. We are extending this procedure to include our volunteers. This procedure helps us maintain the safety of our students. The gift of your time is sincerely appreciated! You make all the difference! Sincerely, Cheryl Meyer, Principal 715-268-9771 ext. 266 meyerc@amerysd.k12.wi.us “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” - Dr. Seuss, The Lorax 2
Why volunteer? To experience the satisfaction of helping someone else To meet new people and make new friends To share your gift with others To support our school Goals of Volunteering To increase the quality of education that our student’s receive To share the skills and talents of our local community To inspire interest, concern and support for education What can volunteers do? Volunteers perform important roles within our school, enriching classrooms while sharing their unique talents, interests, and valuable time with students, faculty and administration. There are many ways our volunteers can be helpful at Lien Elementary School. Work with individual or small groups of children on academic subjects under the supervision of a licensed teacher. Share expertise with a classroom to complement their learning. Complete clerical tasks including copy work, laminating and other organizational work. Assist in various activities around the building. Organize classroom activities Represent the school as a Parents as Partner’s committee member. Signing-In procedures for volunteers When you enter the school building, please report directly to the main office. You will be asked to provide a driver’s license or car keys in exchange for a volunteer badge. Volunteers must always wear a volunteer badge for safety reasons as it provides authorization for you to be in the building volunteering. Maintain confidentiality As a matter of professional ethics, honor and respect for our students and staff, volunteers do not discuss teacher, student or school affairs with other people. In the event a volunteer hears information concerning the safety or well-being of a child, please seek assistance from the principal, teacher or guidance counselor. It is extremely important that confidentiality be upheld at all times. Administration has the same expectations of confidentiality from volunteers as they do from the faculty at Lien. If you have concerns, please speak directly with the teacher or principal. Be Reliable Remember that students and staff members depend on your presence. If you are unable to keep a scheduled volunteer commitment, please call the elementary office at 715-268-9771 extension 263 and ask that the staff member with whom you work be informed. “You have not lived a perfect day, even though you have earned your money, unless you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” 3 ~ Ruth Smeltzer
Be a role model Remember that you are acting as a role model for the students. Conduct yourself with dignity, courtesy and consideration at all times. Be flexible Remember you are at school to help all students. You will be making a contribution whether you are working with your child’s class or in another setting. Determination of the need for and role(s) of classroom volunteers rests with the teacher. Warrior Way School-Wide Discipline The foundation of the Warrior Way at Lien Elementary School has three building-wide expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. To reinforce these unified rules and expectations, students receive positive acknowledgment for appropriate behaviors. This will help motivate students to do their best. We believe that by helping students engage in appropriate behavior, we will form a school community where all students have the opportunity to grow and succeed. Supervision Volunteers work under the supervision of staff or an appointed representative from Lien Elementary School. Restroom: Volunteers are not to supervise students in the bathroom. This is the sole responsibility of faculty at Lien. Playground: Volunteers are allowed on the playgrounds, however, a completed background check is required prior to doing so. Volunteers are required to report to the playground supervisor prior to going on the playground. Questions Don’t hesitate to ask questions or to set up a meeting to get further instructions, if needed. If you have questions about your volunteer assignment in general, talk to the principal. If you have questions about student instructional, curricular or behavior concerns, talk to the teacher. If you have questions about school climate issues, harassment or discrimination concerns or conduct of students or staff that upsets you, talk to the principal. “If every American donated five hours a week, it would equal the labor of 20 million full-time volunteers.” ~ Whoopi Goldberg 4

The school nurse will immediately be notified of all student accidents. Substance abuse Volunteers are prohibited from consuming, possessing, furnishing, selling or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs in school or at any school sponsored, organized or associated function or on/in any property, facility or vehicle owned or operated by or for the school. Effective Ways to Work with Children Be warm and friendly - learn children’s names and show interest in what they are doing and learning. Be a good listener. Use positive comments to encourage the child. Build the children’s confidence by praising their attention, achievement and effort. Be as specific as possible in your praise. Don’t make promises that you cannot keep. Maintain a sense of humor. Communicate often with the teacher. “Many hands make light work” ~ John Heywood 5
