Principal’s News Tēnā koutou te whānau Ngā mihi ki a koutou i roto i tēnei wā māhana! Greetings one and all as we move into the warmer part of the year. Over the Labour Weekend break and week 3 of this term, I was lucky enough to join the Mayor and a Senior Manager from the Napier City Council on a visit to Lianyungang which is the Napier sister city in China. While I was there, we visited the Lianyungang Foreign Language School and signed a sister school agreement which should see us start exchanges in 2019. China is a huge country and quite different to Aotearoa – I am looking forward to giving some of our students the opportunity to visit and experience a different way of life. Term 4 is flying past, and we have around five weeks of school left. Most of our seniors are on study leave with some still coming in to school to finish assessments and study with their teachers. Our juniors continue with their programmes – they are working hard to meet the requirements of their Junior Diploma and we have some fun events coming up; in week 7 we have a project day planned and in week 9 we have two activity days planned and a final day at Splash Planet. These days are important parts of our programme and the remainder of classes will be solidifying the foundation for next year – so it’s still very important for all our juniors to keep coming to school. Please help us by making sure your tamariki are here on time. Most students are looking great in the uniforms, but a couple are wearing non-regulation hats and shoes. Please remind them to follow the school rules that they agreed to when they enrolled. Last week we celebrated our seniors at our Prizegiving. Once again, it was a real pleasure to have Tamatea’s first Principal, John Ryan, in attendance and presenting the major awards. Our Head Boy, Kelson McKay and Head Girl, Mikaylah Selby, delivered wonderful speeches that were authentic, heartfelt and made us all feel very proud. It was fantastic to award our prize for Dux to Jayden Hunt, who has worked hard this year to achieve some impressive academic results. We were all delighted to be able to recognise his work by adorning him with the new school korowai which is a kakahu created over the last year by our very own Learning Assistant, Beverley Ansell. In the next few weeks we will be interviewing applicants for leadership positions in 2019 and I look forward to announcing the successful candidates at our Junior Prizegiving on Thursday 13th of December. Finally, I’d like to acknowledge the recent announcement that Mr Stephen Hensman, the Principal of Taradale High School, will be retiring next year. Stephen is a friend and mentor of mine and he has been a terrific servant to Taradale High. We wish him well. Koinā āku kōrero mō tēnei wā – ngā mihi aroha ki a koutou katoa. Matua Robin Beverley Ansell presenting the kakahu to Jayden Hunt our Dux for 2018. The kakahu was hand-woven and hand crafted by Beverley. A wonderful taonga for our school.
