The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship Scheme 香港賽馬會獎學金 R e g u la t i o n s & P r o c e d u r e s – 2 0 1 4 / 1 5 (H K IE d ) 1. Introduction The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship Scheme was established in 1998. Phase I was completed in 2012. It provides an average of 27 scholarships each year for local1 and Mainland students to pursue first degree programmes in the eight UGC-funded institutions2 and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The scholarship supported each student for a period of three years. To complement the new academic structure for senior secondary and higher education, Phase II of the Scholarship Scheme starting from the academic year 2012/13 will run for a period of five years. Three scholarships will be awarded to local students and one to Mainland students for each of the nine institutions. The scholarship will cover the student’s four years of academic and living expenses. Scholars are chosen by their respective tertiary institutions on the basis of outstanding academic ability as well as their community service record and other talents. Renewal of the scholarship depends on the level of the student’s performance. Applicants should apply directly through their universities / institutions. Successful applicants under the Scholarship Scheme will be named Jockey Club Scholars. They are expected to join and participate in activities and community services organized by The Jockey Club Scholars Alumni Association, a not-for-profit organization. The Alumni Association aims to build a strong network of Scholars who can make good use of their diverse backgrounds and expertise to serve the community. These Scholars share the Club’s philanthropic values and its desire to serve as a Force for Good in society, and are actively involved in community services through the Alumni Association. 1 Students who have resided in Hong Kong for three consecutive years immediately prior to the commencement of their undergraduate programmes. 2 These include the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong. 1
2. Provision of the Scholarship (a) Three scholarships will be awarded to local students and one to a Mainland student for an institution in each cohort. (b) Each scholarship will cover a period of up to four years (according to the normal duration of the study programme). (c) The scholarship is renewed annually with reference to the Scholarship recipient's continued outstanding academic performance (see Point 5.1a and 5.1b below) and participation in extra- curricular activities and community services, and the recommendation of the HKIEd’s Committee on Scholarships and Prizes. (d) Concurrent receipt of other scholarship(s) is not allowed. 3. Value of Scholarships (a) The scholarship will cover the student’s academic and living expenses up to four years. (b) The value of each scholarship is $96,500 per year for local students and $154,400 per year for Mainland students. (The figures are for reference and will be adjusted each year.) 4. Eligibility Criteria Applicants should be: (a) UGC-funded students undertaking a full-time undergraduate programme. (b) Year 1 students admitted in the 2013/14 academic year. (c) Local or non-local Mainland students. 5. Selection Criteria 5.1 Academic requirements – Nomination will be based on students’ first year academic results: (a) Semester GPA 3.5 at the time of application, AND Year GPA 3.5 for consideration of nomination by the HKIEd; or (b) Students with special talents or outstanding achievements may be considered provided that they achieve a min. Semester GPA of 3.3 at the time of application, AND Year GPA 3.3 for consideration of nomination by the HKIEd. 5.2 Other requirements: (a) Proficiency in the Chinese and English languages; 2
(b) Leadership qualities as demonstrated in their involvement in extra-curricular activities and/or community services; (c) High commitment to the society. 5.3 Once being awarded The Jockey Club Scholarship, concurrent receipt of other scholarships is not allowed, except for exchange scholarship due to its special nature, and prizes / awards recognizing student’s specific contribution or achievement. 5. Application and Nomination Procedure (a) Application shall be invited from students. Completed application forms with supporting documents should be submitted to the respective Faculty (FEHD / FHM / FLASS) by 12:00 noon, 22 September 2014 (Monday). (b) Faculties shall select candidates for interview. (c) Faculties shall forward nominations to the HKIEd’s Committee on Scholarships and Prizes for screening. (d) The Committee on Scholarships and Prizes shall conduct a further interview. (e) The Committee on Scholarships and Prizes shall recommend candidates for consideration of The Hong Kong Jockey Club by end of October 2014. (f) Short listed candidates from institutions shall attend an interview at The Hong Kong Jockey Club. (g) The Hong Kong Jockey Club shall notify institutions of the results. 6. Conditions of Award 6.1 The awardees are required to attend two compulsory functions organized by The Hong Kong Jockey Club: (a) Scholars orientation programme (b) Scholarship presentation ceremony 6.2 The awardees are encouraged to actively participate in other functions like graduation celebration dinner, summer visits programme, and activities / community services organised by the Jockey Club Scholars Alumni Association. 3
6.3 The awardees are required to maintain a high level of academic performance and good conduct for renewal of the scholarship. Once the scholarship is terminated, it cannot be reinstated. 6.4 The scholarship shall be discontinued if the awardee withdraws from the first degree programme, is suspended or expelled from the HKIEd. The decision of the Institute and The Hong Kong Jockey Club is final and binding. 8. Payment of the Scholarship The Hong Kong Jockey Club shall pay to institutions the scholarship for that year to settle outstanding institutional fees. The balance of the scholarship will be paid to the awardees via the Student Affairs Office of the HKIEd. 9. Revision and Amendments All terms and conditions stated above may be revised, amended and updated at any time as deemed necessary by The Hong Kong Jockey Club and the HKIEd.
