Derrinallum P-12 College Community Newsletter Edition Edition 619 June March 26th, 5th, August 2020 2021 14th, 2020 Edition 24 Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Empathy, Support Assistant Principal’s Report It has been another hectic week, with a number of extra-curricular events taking place. Our Year 7/8 cohort ventured to Roses Gap for their camp, Year 3-6 students travelled to Skipton for the WPPS Swimming Carnival and Year 7-12 students are currently in Mortlake for the MWD Swimming. Unfortunately, the weather hasn’t been the greatest for these events. We also had Lions Youth of the Year on Tuesday evening for our senior students. Whilst it has been a hectic week, it has been great to be able to have these important events once again and I am sure the students are having a blast getting out and about again. Students of the Month: I would like to congratulate Jake and Riley for receiving the first Student on the Month awards for 2021. Both boys received a number of nominations for outstanding effort and demonstrating the school values. Well done, Jake and Riley. Year 7/8 Camp: I have heard many great reports from the Roses Gap camp. Every student that I have spoken with has told me that they had a great time and I have laughed at a few of the stories that have been told. I was particularly entertained by Ms. Riley’s recount of her and Andrea tipping the canoe and I got the impression that Ms. Riley may have been the person responsible for their little swim. Thank you and well done to Mr. Missen for running such a great camp. By all reports, it ran very smoothly. Continued………….. Derrinallum P-12 College Community Newsletter WPPS Swimming: It wasn’t the warmest day on Thursday, but our Year 3-6 students travelled to Skipton to compete against other schools in the WPPS cluster. Whilst I haven’t had the opportunity to speak with many students about the day, I have heard reports that most students competed well and represented our College with pride and distinction. Well done to all involved. MWD Swimming: As I am writing this, our Year 7-12 students who are competing in the MWD swimming are currently travelling to Mortlake. It looks quite fresh outside, so I hope they have all packed some warm clothes to wear between races. Ms. Fitzgerald will hopefully provide some insight into their day in next week’s newsletter. Lion’s Youth of the Year: Five of our senior students participated in the Lions Youth of the Year competition at the College on Tuesday night. These students were required to attend an interview, present a speech and answer a number of impromp- tu questions about current events and issues. A lot of preparation went into their speeches and Ms. Green worked tirelessly with them to make sure that were prepared for the competition. Congratulations to all students to stepped out of their comfort zones to compete. Special mention to Hunter and Audrey, who were awarded overall winner and public speaking winner, respectively. Year 5/6 Camp: Year 5/6 students have today received expression of interest notes for Canberra Camp. The camp will run in Week 1 of Term 4 (4th – 8th October) and is a great opportunity for students to visit the nation’s capital and visit many great attractions, such as Questacon, Parliament House, The Australian Institute of Sport and The War Memorial. As the camp is quite expensive, we are sending out expressions of interest now so that families can arrange payment plans if required. If any families feel like the camp might be too expensive, please contact Ms. Fitzgerald or myself at the College so we can discuss ways that we can support you. We want to make sure ALL students have the opportunity to experience this great opportunity. MWD Traithlon: Next Wednesday, 21 secondary students will compete in the MWD Triatlon. Students will compete in teams of three, with each student competing either the run, swim or ride component. It is great to see so many of our stu- dents put their hands up to be involved. Look for results in next week’s newsletter. NAPLAN: It’s getting close to NAPLAN time again. In Week 9 of this term, we will complete a coordinated NAPLAN prac- tice test to make sure all of the technology is working in preparation for the actual tests. Whilst NAPLAN is a test that is used to assess our students’ literacy and numeracy progress, I would like to remind families and students that the NAPLAN results are simply an indication of a student’s performance in the moment of time which the test in conducted. However, it is important that all students who complete the test do their absolute best, as we use the data collected from NAPLAN to inform our planning and teaching. Labour Day Public Holiday: This is just a reminder that Monday is a public holiday and students are not required to attend.I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable long weekend. We only have four weeks to go before the end of the term and it is going to be a busy four weeks. I’m really looking forward to watching the mighty Magpies tonight in the AFL pre- season game, as well as the AFLW Pies, who currently sit atop the ladder. Go Pies!! Derrinallum P-12 College Community Newsletter Year 7/8 Camp - Roses Gap On Monday the Year 7/8’s ventured to Roses Gap for their camp. Naturally the students were excited after the past year and half that we have had . Students participated in the following activities; vertical playpen, canoeing, giant swing, abseiling, crate stacking, low ropes course and zip line. Students engaged in the games room playing checkers, chess, table tennis and connect four. We had a movie night where lots of laughs were had. The second night students participated in a amazing race where they were challenged with trivia and activities. We lit the camp fire and played a game of spot light hide and seek. It was fantastic to see all students give the activities a go, challenge themselves, support each other and grow in confidence over the duration. Well done to the students for being on their best behaviour and making the camp successful and enjoyable. A big thanks to Ms Riley and Andrea for assisting myself on camp and providing the students and I with a laugh when you sank your canoe. Mr Missen
