Ensembles True to our motto “BORN TO PERFORM”, students are nurtured towards their first public performances. Choir and band rehearsals are an essential part of a student’s musical development and are integral to the Mornington Secondary College Instrumental Music (Ensemble) Program. All students opting for lessons are required to attend their allocated weekly reherasals. Teachers Our experienced teachers are themselves professional musicians and thus offer much expertise and inspiration to our students. Cost of the Lessons Participation on the Instrumental Music (Ensemble) program is $200 per year, inclusive of weekly lessons and ensemble rehearsals. Hire of Instrument Wind and brass instruments – Available from the $200 per year (plus $200 bond) College Please note: Guitars, drum kits, pianos and keyboards are not available from the College Performances – Born to Perform Participation in a College ensemble is an expectation of all students who undertake instrumental lesson and provides a valuable opportunity to develop performance skills. Ensembles and soloists participate in school performances, informal concerts, College assemblies, the College production, music camps, tours and numerous community performances. Music Camp/Workshops Students in the Instrumental Music program are invited to attend our enormously fun and productive music camps and workshops with their ensembles. We usually perform in the community on the final day. Please note additional costs will apply. Facilities The music school houses five instrumental teaching rooms, including an ensemble rehearsal space and four studios, in addition to the Music Office and secure store rooms for students’ instruments. Lesson Times Students come to lessons from their regular classes on a withdrawal basis. Each lesson lasts for half a period, with the lesson time altering each week. Students will not miss a whole class nor the same class more than a few times each term. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what classwork has been missed, and to catch up with any homework and tests. Lesson times are scheduled online via COMPASS, and are also displayed outside the music office and in the Learning Centre. Absences If you are going to be away from school on an excursion, camp, or for any other legitimate reason, we ask that you inform your teacher or conductor of your absence before the lesson or rehearsal so it can be rescheduled. Alternatively, get a message to the music department after the absence. You may accidentally forget the odd lesson or rehearsal (hopefully not); please tell your teacher when you remember. Assessment and Reporting At the end of each semester, each instrumental music student is given a formal performance examination in each instrument learnt. They are assessed on their technical proficiency, the performance of pieces (solo and ensemble works) and their organisational and practice skills. Students are expected to demonstrate progress made over the semester. Student progress is reported each semester. External Exams Students are able to sit for external exams such as AMEB, Trinity and ANZCA etc as private entrants, where appropriate. Parents pay an extra fee for this directly to the examination body. These exams are held at a private venue. Singers and instrumentalists may need to engage an accompanist for these exams at an extra charge. Parents should understand that students who undertake to sit external exams do so as a non-compulsory activity that is extra to the usual school program. The school does not hold any responsibility for students when they attend these exams. Page | 3
