Tuesday 19 November From the Principal Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome back to the 2020 school year. We are now almost 3 weeks down and all students are well into their learning for this term. Most students have settled well back into school routines and many are relishing the opportunities that being one year level older gives them. Last weekend our P&C hosted their major fundraiser, The Burdekin Boars and Barras competition. This was a hugely successfully community event and the P&C are to be congratulated for their outstanding efforts. Congratulations to all of the winners! Sincerely, Troy Patti Principal In the Classroom Those who have come into our classrooms recently would have noticed that we have a theme for this term. This term our classrooms will come to life in the theme of dragons and princesses. This is linked to our current English unit, which is focused on the elements of narratives that are about dragons and princesses. Our renewed focus on the teaching of writing has seen our students have many opportunities to write short texts to demonstrate their understanding of various grammatical and textual elements (such as adverbs, adjectives, capital letters, end punctuation and letter sound combinations). The students are really enjoying this writing and we have already seen an improvement in the level of writing displayed by a number of students. In mathematics, the students have been learning about the following: Prep – Numbers to 10 Year 1 – Place value to 100 and units of time. Year 2 – Calendars and units of measurement (hours, minutes, days, years) Year 3 – Telling and making the time to five minute intervals on both analogue and digital clocks and odd and even numbers. Year 5 – Factors and Multiples, prime and composite numbers and multiplication relationships and strategies. Year 6 – Problem solving strategies such as rounding, front-ending, split strategy, compensate strategy, jump strategy and written algorithms. They have also been learning about square, triangular, prime and composite numbers.
Parents and Citizens Association Meeting The next P&C Meeting for this year will be the Annual General Meeting and will be held on Wednesday 19 February at 3:00pm – 4:30pm in the library. At this meeting, all of the executive positions will be vacated and a new executive will be elected. This is an excellent opportunity for all parents and community members to have an input into our school and their child’s education. Playgroup The Clare State School Playgroup are about to start meeting again. Playgroup will be held on alternating Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout this term from 8:30am – 10:30am. Our Playgroup is free and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our Playgroup is open for all families, no matter where they live or which school they send their children to. Leadership Camp On Thursday and Friday this week, our year 6 students will be in Townsville for their leadership camp. The students will participate in many leadership activities through the GRIP Leadership Conference. They will also enjoy other activities such as sculpture and going to an indoor playground. Please see the attached note for more information. Webber Shield Congratulations to Ronin Kovacich who competed as part of the Small Schools Team at the Webber Shield. Ronin placed 5th for breaststroke in the 11 years boys division and also placed fifth in his heat for the 50m freestyle. Great job Ronin! Leadership Speeches On the following Wednesday (19 February), our year 5 and 6 students will be presenting their leadership speeches and our school will vote for our new student leaders for 2020. This will take place in the classroom from 8:30am – 9:30am. The students in year 5 and 6 are all vying for the elected positions of School Captain, Sports Captain, President of the Student Council, Secretary of the Student Council and Treasurer of the Student Council and Student Leader. All are welcome to attend. It should be noted that leadership positions will be filled with year 6 students first but, as stated above, the positions are also available to year 5 students. All positions will reveive badges at our Induction Parade, which will be held on 27 February at 9:45am in the Library. Parents and carers who attend this Induction Parade are asked to bring a plate of food to share.
Show your Hearts Day (Sweethearts Day) Yesterday, our school turned red to support HeartKids. This is an organisation that is very important to all involved in our school. The students were treated to red heart cupcakes for lunch and also got to view a PowerPoint Presentation about our very own HeartKid, Jaiden Booth.
