Thursday 4 June From the Principal Dear Parents and Guardians, With two weeks of having everyone back at school now under our belts, everything is back to relative normality. All extra-curricular activities have been suspended until the end of the term and we will see what next term brings in the way of restrictions. Our increased cleaning regime, increased levels of hygiene and social distancing requirements will remain in place until further notice. If any parents, have photos or videos of their children learning at home, can you please send them in either via e-mail to Mrs Corradi (lcorr18@eq.edu.au) or send them to school on a USB with your child. We hope to use some of these photos for our end of year video and graduation books. The past few weeks have also had us experiencing some pretty cold weather. Many students are coming to school rugged up in their school jumpers and some are choosing to wear tights or long pants. The school jumper is part of our school uniform. If your child does not have a school jumper, they are available from the school every day for $35 each. Please bring the correct money and we will supply you with a jumper. In addition, it is our strong preference that children wear tracksuit pants or tights that are black or navy blue. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Troy Patti Principal In the Classroom Students are really enjoying their science units at the moment. Our P-2 students are investigating forces and have observed the effects of different pushes and pulls during a Push and Pull Circuit investigation. They have also made their own parachute to investigate the difference between dropping
an object without a parachute and with a parachute. Now they are on to making a rolling toy and investigating the effects of rolling it on different surfaces. Our year 3- 6 students have been learning all about life cycles, the parts of a flower, dispersal and pollination as well as food chains and food webs. This has been a very ‘hands on’ unit and the students have been really engaged in their learning. In English, students are all learning about persuasive writing. Students in prep have been writing about their likes and dislikes for a variety of subjects. Remy Booth wrote, “I like kicking the ball” when writing his likes and dislikes about soccer. Our students in year 1 and 2 have been using the OREO paragraph structure to write a persuasive text on the following topics; school should finish at lunchtime and the Clare Pool needs a waterslide. Ruby Dumaresq was the only student to disagree with the idea of school stopping at lunchtime. They boys thought that the earlier school finished, the better! Our year 5 and 6 students have continued to redraft their persuasive text on a topic of their choice. They have been adding in many persuasive devices, such as alliteration, assonance, metaphors, similes and rhetorical questions, to make their text more persuasive. An example text from Myer Wyburg is attached to the back of this newsletter. Some have also started practicing their speech. Next week all students will start their assessment task for English. In Mathematics, students have been learning about the following: Prep – Properties of 2D shapes and matching number names, numerals and quantities to 20. Year 1 – Properties of 2D shapes, adding and subtracting single-digit and 2-digit numbers and direction and position words (left, right, up, down, over, under, etc.) Year 2 – Telling time on analogue and digital clocks and how addition and subtraction facts are related. Year 3 – Partitioning and writing 3-digit numbers and locating these on a numberline. Year 5 – Measuring and creating angles. Year 6 – Order of Operations.
