What is Subject-Based Banding (PRI)? • Provides greater flexibility for your child by offering him the option of a combination of standard and foundation subjects, depending on his strengths. • Allowsyour child to focus on and stretch his potential in the subjects that he is strong in while building up the fundamentals in the subjects that he needs more support in. (The intent for SBB is not for offering softer options) Note: Enabling Lifelong Learning
Terms Used and Abbreviations • Standard Subject (S) • A subject that is pitched at the level of the previous EM2 level • Foundation Subject (F) • A subject that is pitched at the level of the previous EM3 level • Higher Mother Tongue (H) • H subjects are meant for pupils who are able to manage English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue very well
How does Subject-Based Banding (Pri) work? Subject Combinations School Considerations and Criteria Class Allocation Support for your child Timeline
SKGPS Subject Combinations at P4 for P5/2019 • 4S 1H • 4S • 3S 1F(MA) • 4F
School Considerations • Performance at P4 • Past performance at P1-P3 • Recommendations by form and subject teachers Note : • SBB is not about giving students an Easy Option hence Standard subjects are offered to majority of students. Offering subjects at Standard level for certain weaker students at end of P4 is not a disadvantage.
Criteria for Subject Combination – 4S 1H P4 to P5 P5 to P6 Achieve at least Band 1 for CL/ML (overall Achieve at least 75 (Grade A) for standard score) CL/ML (overall score) Achieve at least Band 2 for EMS (overall score) Achieve at least a pass for HCL/HML (overall score) Achieve at least Band 2 for EMS (overall score) School’s decision is final Note: Additional class and work for students at P5. Note: At the end of P5, if students cannot meet the Students will take 5 subjects. above criteria, they will have to drop HCL/HML at P6. School will recommend and parents opt. School takes into consideration student’s capability to manage EMS and his/her interest in the learning HCL/HML.) * Students who do not study HCL/HML at P5 will not be allowed to take HCL/HML at P6.
Bonus Points for Admission to SAP Secondary Schools • Students in the top 30% of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) cohort who take Higher Chinese (For HCL only) at the PSLE will be given bonus points for admission to SAP schools according to the following table: Higher CL Grades Bonus Points Distinction 3 Merit 2 Pass 1 • Students who are interested are advised to select SAP schools among the six school choices - Source: https://www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/secondary-one-posting-exercise/eligibility-letter
List of SAP Schools • Anglican High School
Considerations to do HCL/HML Higher demands on students • Time factor • Extra 1 hr/week taught outside curriculum time • Increased daily homework workload (Taking 5 subjects in total) • Ability to cope with 4 other subjects (EL, MA, MTL & SC) • Love for the language and the culture • Independent learning and revision is expected • Individual & group remediation will not be provided as students are expected to meet minimum expectations.
P4 MT Progression to P5 HMT P5 MT P5 HMT • Oral, Listening & Reading • Composition Comprehension skills • Written comprehension • Composition paper • Language Use & Comprehension HMT pupils sit for 2 subjects assessment papers – MT & HMT
Differences between HMT and MT subjects Does HMT helps my child to perform better in MT examinations? • MT & HMT are 2 separate subjects • Demands are different • Examination formats are totally different • Example: • P5 MT Composition – Choice of picture composition and topic • P5 HMT Composition – Choice of topic & continuous writing • HMT focuses on competency in writing skills 7/9/2018
Other Considerations for taking HCL/HML • Stretching the students is important, but must not cause distress to students • Priority is still on regular curriculum • Other commitments are to be considered • Holistic education and overall well-being of the students must not be compromised
Doing Higher Mother Tongue in Secondary School Can my child do HMT in secondary school if he/she has not taken HMT at PSLE? • Students may opt to take up HMT (viz. Higher Chinese/ Higher Malay/ Higher Tamil) from Secondary One (S1) onwards if they have taken MT or HMT at PSLE and are in the • Top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or • Top 11%—30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the language criteria i.e. an A* grade in the MT or at least a Merit in HMT. - Source: https://www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/secondary-one-posting-exercise/eligibility-letter - SCHOOLS & CENTRES OFFERING HIGHER MOTHER TONGUE, CHINESE (SPECIAL PROGRAMME) & MALAY (SPECIAL PROGRAMME) https://www.moe.gov.sg/docs/default- source/document/education/admissions/secondary-one-posting/2016-files/schools-offering-hmtl.pdf 7/9/2018
How does Subject-Based Banding work at the End of P5?
How will classes be allocated in P5? • First cut allocation into P5 classes will be based on Eng, Maths and Science results. • Mother Tongue (HCL/HML/CL/ML) groupings will be done separately, as students doing HCL/HML may be grouped differently.
How are students allocated to P5 classes at the end of the year? General Guidelines • *Classes will be organised into broad ability bands: Diagram is only for illustration purpose, may not reflect actual situation • Classes in each colour band will have pupils with similar/close abilities • Maximum of 40 pupils per class • Overall performance in E, M & S will be considered first • Mother Tongue will be grouped differently • Movement from P5 to P6 will be based on the child’s performance in accordance to SBB Guidelines
Progression to P5 As an enhancement to providing a Student-Centric, Values-Driven Education, the school will continue to organise P5 classes according to broad ability banding. The numbering/naming of the classes may not follow any particular order. The school would like to work with parents in looking at each child individually, recognise his/her strengths and weaknesses to develop his/her potential and at the same time enhance character development.

Parental Choice at the End of P4 • Parental option is given at the end of P4 • Parents will make decision on the subject combination their child starting with school’s recommendation • Once parents have selected a combination, pupil will have to take the combination for at least a year. • Final Decision by School at the End of P5
Important Points to note • The introduction of SBB is not to give softer options to pupils • It is more to allow pupils to offer a subject combination that stretches them (which was not possible under the previous streaming system • Any combination will only be good to a pupil if he/she is able to manage and do well!
Subject-Based Banding (Pri) and Secondary School Admission: How are they related? • Progression to secondary level depends on your child’s PSLE score. • Offering subjects at the foundation level is not a disadvantage to your child. • Enables him to focus on building up strong fundamentals in these subjects and better prepares him for progression to secondary school.
Support for your child • Set realistic expectations • Provide a conducive study environment at home • Monitor work and Motivate child • Work hand in hand with teachers
