How do I prepare for the January return? ● Complete the travel form and campus arrival form ● Self quarantine through the holiday week and refrain from gatherings with extended family or friends outside your household ● Get a negative PCR test at home within 7 days of returning to campus ● Be careful in planning your travel back to campus ● Don’t come back to campus if you’re feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms ● Rededicate yourself to the routines which keep you, your friends, your teachers, and our community safe
Campus Arrival Procedure ● We will return in groups beginning on 1/4/2021: ● Monday, January 4 – Testing for day students and for ninth grade boarding students (except leaders in other dorms) ● Tuesday, January 5 – Testing for eighth grade boarding students and floor leaders in these dorms ● Wednesday, January 6 – Testing for sixth and seventh grade boarding students and floor leaders in these dorms ● CMS will pick up students at the airport as necessary ● Required testing for students at the Surge Center (on campus) ● ~20 students per hour, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM (10:00 AM-12:00 PM for day students) ● If a student arrives with concerning symptoms, he will need to return home or go straight to on-campus care if home is not an option ● Boarding students will report directly to their dormitory pod during the required quarantine period ● Day students will return home until the quarantine period is completed
Campus Arrival Procedure: Your First Stop! ● Use the campus entrance for the Commons ● The Surge Center is the white building immediately on your right
Quarantine and Remote Learning Period ● Keep the community safe ● Support students dealing with jetlag and/or homesickness ● Limit screen time, get outside ● Provide routine and academic work ● Maintain class time and provide boys with opportunity to “catch up” if necessary ● Help remote students and midyear students transition to our protocols and expectations
Winter/Spring Calendar and Schedule ● While we are optimistic about the vaccine, we are realistic on its timeline for roll-out ● Our calendar and schedule design work has been informed by feedback from parent and faculty surveys, and captained by a group including medical staff, faculty, and administrators ● Our goal in this group’s work was to build a recognizably Cardigan program that balances the safety of the community; a focus on the mind, body, and spirit of our students; and is sustainable for all community members (adults and students) on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
Winter/Spring Calendar: Overview ● We will replace our traditional, off-campus Spring Break with a series of on-campus breaks balancing time for rest, recovery, careful supervision, and creative activities ○ One week each in February and April ○ Two extended weekends in March ○ Two additional “Head’s Holidays” as needed ● Timing the transition from winter to spring season and schedule based on weather and availability of facilities ● Earlier end to the school year, with Commencement on May 16
Winter Schedule: Overview ● Five-day week (Monday - Friday) with formal programming on Saturday mornings, allowing opportunities for students to participate in athletics, outdoor adventures, arts, academics, and/or community service ● Academic schedule will include seven academic blocks of 40 minutes each, rotating daily ● Regular advisory check-ins ● Wednesday afternoons will be reserved for community activities, including Clubs, Dorm Olympics, All-School meetings, and/or Chapel ● Athletics will meet four afternoons/week for team-based practices, with an option for a fifth skills-based practice or intramural game on Saturday mornings ● Will re-evaluate schedule as move into spring

Winter/Spring: Expanded Safety Precautions ● Maintaining strategies from the fall: mask wearing, pod-based community life, split dining, etc. ● One test before coming to Cardigan; two tests prior to leaving quarantine period ● Air purification strategies in classrooms and buildings ● Rapid testing availability through Mascoma Community Health Center, as needed for symptomatic students ● Expanding our expectations for mask wearing and for regular testing
Winter/Spring: Parent Visits ● While moving away from Spring Break is likely the right thing to do for safety and continuity, we acknowledge that it is challenging personally ● We will open up opportunities for parent visits after we have re-established our “bubble” on campus ● Indoor meetings will be more challenging from a safety and logistical perspective, but we will establish clear protocols before and during visits ● We appreciate your patience, support, and understanding. We see this as important and essential, but our plans will be focused on keeping the community at Cardigan safe, and our school program on-campus through this period
Winter/Spring: Secondary School Process ● Primary application deadline on January 15 ● Support of ninth graders during admissions process and on decision day (March 10) ● Second Visit/Revisit Days before enrollment decisions (April 10) ● Preparing Class of 2022 for next steps in the Spring
Q&A ● What will grades/comments/transcripts look like this year? ● What will athletics look like in the winter and spring? When will we transition from one season to another? ● How are we addressing safety concerns during this period? ● Other questions?
Thank you! ● Thank you for your questions ● Thank you for your patience and understanding ● Thank you for your partnership ● Thank you for your trust
