President's Message Dear friends and aviation enthusiasts SIAE is pleased to bring you another interesting adventure into the aviation world. In this 5th episode of our Aviation Safety Competition, we focus on the engineering behind computers. With the theme “Flying with Computers”, ASC 2019/2020 will have a series of lectures conducted by experts from the aviation industry. Visits to aerospace facilities will be organized for participants to get a feel of real-life aircraft and airport operations. Students in teams of 3-5 will work on case studies under the guidance of aviation experts. There will be one category for young students up to 16 years old and another open category for students up to 30 years old. Our Technical Committee will select up to five finalists from each category to present their solutions at the finals. SIAE is a non-profit organization with a mission to build an aviation culture for our Next Generation of Aviation Professionals. Through this competition and other activities, we hope to reach out to you and your friends, generating interest in aviation and encourage you all to consider careers in the aerospace industry. Special Features • Exciting Industry Visits Industry visits will be organized for participants to gain insights to aerospace companies. • Lectures Delivered by Industry Experts Theme related lectures on Computers in Flight, Computers in Airports and Computers in Maintenance will be conducted for students to gain the industry-related knowledge. • Award Ceremony with attractive prizes^ There would be First, Second, Third and Innovative Prizes for winners of each category. Prizes worth up to S$5,000 can be won. Participants will receive Certificate of Participation after submitting the final entries. ^Prizes and awards are subjected to changes at the sole discretion of SIAE. ^SIAE has the final authority on the judging of all entries, as well as the awarding of prizes in the competition.
Competition Overview Aviation Safety Competition (ASC) The Aviation Safety Competition is a Singapore Institute of Aerospace Engineers (SIAE) initiated project. This project aims to reach out to students from schools, polytechnics, colleges and universities, generating interest in aviation and encouraging them to consider careers in the aviation industry. Our mission is to build an aviation culture for our Next Generation of Aviation Professionals. This year, with the theme "Flying with Computers", it will be the fifth competition of the series. The program is to launch in 2019 with a series of lectures conducted by industry experts and senior practitioners from agencies dealing with aviation safety, navigation and MRO. Visits to aviation facilities would also be scheduled for participants to get a feel of real-life aircraft and airport operations. Case studies will be included in lectures. Students in teams of 3 to 5 will be given a problem statement for analysis and presentation. Judges will select up to 5 short-listed entries in each category for the final presentation. Objectives: Learn about Safety in Flight Network with industry experts Visit aviation companies
Categories Category A: students up to 16 years old Category B: students up to 30 years old Problem Statements: Category A: How computer systems improved flight safety during the last 50 years and how else can computer systems improve flight safety. Category B: Will be released in Jun 2020 Registration Students up to 16 years old must be registered with SIAE by 08 Jul 2019, and students up to 30 years old must be registered with SIAE by 30 Jun 2020. • Each team(3-5 participants) needs to submit only one online registration form. • The registration fee amounts to S$ 10 per participant. • By submitting your registration for the competition, you have agreed to allow SIAE the rights to use all project materials, videos, mock-ups, photographs associated with your participation in the Aviation Safety Competition. Submission Requirements & Criteria Form a team of 3-5 students. Attend a series of lectures and industry visit. Submit in 2000 words essay (option to support with video simulation). Final entries must include: 1. A research paper not exceeding 20 pages, including all illustrations, graphics and schematics 2. A complete bibliography Judging Criteria Teams will be assessed based on what they have completed as a whole. Judging criteria for the various categories can be found in the below descriptions respectively. 1. Overall understanding of aircraft and airport operations 2. Understanding of Aviation Safety 3. Research 4. Quality and effectiveness of forensic process 5. Lessons learnt from the case 6. Presentation
Term and Conditions • Registration for Category A will be closed on 08 Jul 2019, and registration for Category B will be closed on 30 Jun 2020. • Minimum of 3 participants, but not more than 5 participants are allowed in a team including the Team leader. • The teams do not have to be affiliated with an educational institution to participate. • For teams associated to educational institutions, there is no limit to the number of teams participating from each educational institution. • All submitted entries, photographs and materials shall be properties of SIAE. • Each participant can only participate in one team. • Teams are allowed to take part in categories higher than their educational standard. • Members and family members of the ASC committee are not allowed to participate in ASC. • SIAE may use these entries at any events at its discretion, without prior written approval from the participating teams. • Cash prizes will be awarded equally to each participant in the team, while non-cash prizes will be restricted to one each per participant in the team. • SIAE reserves the right to amend the rules and regulations. • In the event of any change, all teams will be informed TWO(2) weeks in advance. • All decisions shall be deemed final and binding by SIAE.

Technical Committee Technical Committee comprises representatives of practitioners and experts in the aviation industry. Their expertise and experience provide the competition a focal point on aviation technical matters in theory and practical aspect. ASC 2019/2020 Technical Committee consists of 4 members. Their roles include providing advice on the technical contents of the competition and selecting short-listed teams for the final presentation.
