PARISH STAFF Rev. Jerry Brown, Administrator Pro-tem Rev. Gilbert Arango, Parochial Vicar Rev. Madhu Appanapalle, Parochial Vicar Rev. Mr. Jeff Vierra, Deacon Pastoral Care & Senior Ministry Rev. Mr. Ha Ngoc Nguyen, Deacon Rev. Mr. Fidel Carillo, Deacon Mrs. Susie Dickert, School Principal Mary Ferreira, Office Manager Dave Corder, Faith Formation Director Laura Perez, Coordinator of Religious Formation Jacob Wall Director of Youth Ministry THE PASTOR’S CORNER Guillermo Garcia Jr., Director of Liturgical Music Providence II Lynn Poncini Director of Liturgy The scripture that immediately comes to mind when I start thinking of providence is “We know that all things work for good for those who love Richard Sepulveda, Facilities Manager God, who are called according to his purpose.” [Romans 8:28] Do Paul’s words still ring true to us 2000 years later? When my loved-one dies of cancer, how can I see that as good? We know that good things happen to bad PARISH PASTORAL people, and more importantly that bad things happen to good people. How do COUNCIL Celso Doria, Martin Espinoza, we explain this? This raises yet another thorny question: if God is good, why Allan Rodriguez, Lois Wiedenhoeft, is there such a large amount of evil and suffering in the world? Has he lost Jose Martinez, Erica Campos, control? Darker still, is God the cause of evil? There are those who would Jessica Campos, Jory Kusy, revise our understanding of God to include a “dark side;” Is that where evil Monica Poncini, & Barbara Graham comes from? At the outset let me say that there are no concise answers to these questions, and that they require a life time of wrestling with them. Still I think it is worth troubling our minds over these questions. They are real MISSION STATEMENT We covenant to give ourselves questions and ones that people who either reject faith, or who are estranged to Christ as He gives Himself from the Church are likely to ask you. One can answer that it is all a mystery, to us in the Eucharist, so every and let it go at that, but while that might settle it for one person might be a full, active, who has been a faithful and practicing Christian all their & conscious participant in His life, it will not attract many to Jesus. What do we say to Church, empowered to share & live these things? Paul’s answer is “if God is for us, who can the Gospel. be against us? He did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all.” [Romans 8:31-2] Does that settle it for us too, some 2000 years later? 2 | St. Anthony’s Catholic Church

When we lose a sense of God’s special presence, we need to be brought back. Ezra brought people back to the word of God and they realized what they were missing. Jesus proclaims God’s word in the synagogue with true conviction and tells those gathered that he is the fulfillment of all that Isaiah taught. Even though people get lost, distracted, discouraged, and often journey down the wrong path, God’s timeless law remains. When we allow ourselves to truly hear God’s word and act on it, that living word slowly, over time, changes us. It has the power to soften and mold us, creating within us a joyful spirit. We realize the truth in what God speaks and become open to God’s love. Gradually and gently God leads us back where we belong. We discover again the sacred character of life and the wonder of God’s power. It is no wonder that Luke addresses his remarks to Theophilus. It is a name that means “beloved of God,” a name that can be used by anyone who desires friendship with God. ©LPi 6 | St. Anthony’s Catholic Church
