JUNE 2021 ZION NEWSLETTER Page 1 Zion Lutheran Church June 2021 Be of Good Cheer “The world is so full of a number of things I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.” Robert Louis Stevenson. “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33. What if you gave yourself permission to be happy today, this week, this month, and this year? To just be content with what you have, who you are, and where you are at. And not just content, but completely satisfied, and simply whole in the love of the Lord, the trust of the Lord, the fear of the Lord. The weather makes it easy to be happy right now. Every- where you look there are growing things, green things peeking out of the earth, birds pecking at bugs and worms, flowers picked and in bouquets on your table, and the sun feeling warm on bare skin after all these winter months. If you want to be cheerful, a simple exercise is to list all the things that you are grateful for, which may be different than it is at that other time of year, Thanksgiving, when we think of God’s goodness to us in a fo- cused way and give thanks in prayer. Today I am grateful for the color of the sky, since it is my favorite color, sapphire blue, because it reminds me of holy things since God’s throne is surrounded by stones that color. I am grateful for the wildflowers on our table right now, since I can thank God that in His creation of the world, He didn’t just create practical things, but He had an eye for beauty and was generous to us in that. There are many reasons to be happy; if we take our eyes off the ground and lift them up to the heavens. Another exercise that can make us cheerful is to think of God’s other creation, humankind, and what a gift it is to not be alone in this world. We have family and friends we can be thankful for. We can even find it a profitable exercise to contemplate what our enemies or those who hurt us can teach us, and that wisdom can be welcome. When it comes to those around us, we can pray for them, of course, but we can also practice looking for what is good in them. Just like in gardening, or going on a stroll, we can look for weeds, or we can look for flowers. The same is true with people. We can find what we are looking for, and if we find a lot of faults in others and not much to love, it might say more about us than about them. Some things that don’t bring cheer: 1) The desires and lusts of the flesh “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:5-6) 2) Fear and anxiety “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31
JUNE 2021 ZION NEWSLETTER Page 2 “I sought the Lord, and he answered in the lives of others. As we abound in me; he delivered me from all my fears.” His goodness to us, we too can abound Psalm 34:1-4 in good works, in gratefulness, and in sharing what is righteous and uplifting 3) Pride with others. We are to look not only to “With humility comes wisdom” our own interests, but to the interests of Pastor Hinckley’s Proverbs 11:2 others. (Philippians 2:4).
