NEW LITURGICAL YEAR – Following last Sunday’s Solemnity of Christ the King which brought the Year of Grace 2021 to a close, today we begin the new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent. The Church tells us that “Advent has a two-fold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming to us is remembered, and as a season when that remembrance directs our mind and heart to await Christ’s second coming at the end of time. Advent thus is a period of devout and joyful expectation.” SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION – Our national feast day occurs on December 8th each year. It is always a Holy Day of Obligation. This year it falls on a Wednesday so we will have Vigil Masses in English and in Spanish as well as on the day itself. Please check the schedule elsewhere in this bulletin. FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE – This feast day falls on December 12th. However, this year the 12th falls on a Sunday, so the liturgical feast is transferred to Monday, December 13th. However, that Sunday which is the 3rd Sunday of Advent, we will still have the image of Our Lady in the sanctuary and will properly honor her on that day. More details to follow regarding the traditional Triduum preceding the feast day. MAGNIFICAT MISSALETTE – Some of you may be familiar with this beautiful magazine which has been around for several years now. It contains the full prayers and readings of the daily and Sunday Mass as well as Morning and Evening Prayer and meditations for each day as well as information on the saint of the day. We have these available for purchase in our church gift shop. They are available in both English and Spanish. I strongly recommend them. FINANCIAL REPORT – Included as an insert in this week’s bulletin is our parish Financial Report for the fiscal year 2020-21 which ended on June 30, 2021 and was finalized by our accounting company last week. I am very happy to note that we are currently debt-free for over a year now and have even begun to build at least some reserves from zero in savings in 2019. As you well know, the last two years have been tremendously challenging in every way including financially at all parishes due to the pandemic. In spite of this, we have been able to complete a wide variety of improvements which I have detailed previously. While we are certainly not rich, by any stretch of the imagination, we are holding our own. However, our staffing levels have remained low since we made drastic cutbacks in March of 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. Since then, we have not added any new staffing and have kept personnel costs as low as possible. Our other expenses, however, such as insurance (which is a huge expense) have continued to rise. And now with the terribly high rate of inflation, all parish costs have risen substantially. I would kindly ask that you keep this in mind as you adjust your tithing for the new year. Thank you!
