Scriptural Reflection The Solemnity of the Epiphany (January 2, 2022) While I was studying for my doctorate in Rome, I observed a strange sight in many Italian churches. The statues of the Three Wise Men were often placed near the church doors, far from the manger scene in the front. Every day, they were moved closer and closer to crib, until they finally “arrived” in Bethlehem on January 6 – on the “twelfth day of Christmas” – the traditional day when the Feast of the Three Kings is celebrated. Their journey from the back of the church to the crib reminds us of the tradition that the sages’ pilgrimage to see the child Jesus took many months. This is why King Herod, after the seers did not return to him, ordered all male children in Bethlehem under the age of two to be killed, presumably because the Child could have been that old by the time of their visit. Thinking of the Italian custom of moving the statues closer and closer to the crib makes me think of the way enslaved Black people remembered and told the Epiphany story. The enslaved composed the sacred Spiritual song, “Rise up, shepherds, and follow.” The refrain goes: Follow. Follow. Rise up, shepherds, and follow. Follow the star of Bethlehem. Rise up, shepherds, and follow. But notice that it is the shepherds who are told to follow the star. Not the Wise Men or the Kings. Did the enslaved get the story mixed up? Because they were often illiterate or unable to read, did they confuse the shepherds (who heard the news of the birth from angels) with the rich nobles who followed a star? I don’t think so. I believe that the enslaved Black Christians understood the true meaning of the Epiphany in a way that others did not or could not. They realized that the birth of Jesus was “good news” for ALL people. The wealthy and the impoverished. The Jews and the Gentiles. The well-connected and educated Wise Men and the undocumented and lowly field hands. Therefore, they sang that “star of Bethlehem” was a sign for everyone that the birth of Jesus was a saving event for all people. The star is a light to the nations. Epiphany is a manifestation that Jesus is the savior of all peoples. People around the world celebrate this feast in different ways. But what these various customs have in common is realizing that the birth of Jesus changed the course of human history. This is the meaning of that mysterious star that beckoned wealthy kings from a distance and gathered poor shepherds from their fields. All were summoned, of high and low social status, to recognize the miracle of God being worked in a small child. That same star summons us to recognize the miracles that God is working in each of our lives, as we answer the call to live in the light of Christ. –Fr. Bryan Massingale
–P. Kwanzaa---December 26 (A catechesis for both our young and old. Please stop at our display case in our vestibule.) What are the seven principles of Kwanzaa? There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, or Nguzo Saba. The seven candles, or the mishumaa saba, each stand for a different principle. What do the 7 candles/principles in Kwanzaa stand for? 1. Umoja: Unity. 2. Kujichagulia: Self-Determination. 3. Ujima: Collective Work and Responsibility. 4. Ujamaa: Cooperative Economics. 5. Nia: Purpose. 6. Kuumba: Creativity. 7. Imani: Faith. How do you explain Kwanzaa to kids? Kwanzaa is a week-long holiday celebration that honors pan-African heritage, African American culture, and unity through seven core principles, one for each day of the celebration. There are Kwanzaa activities for adults and kids as a family. Traditions include exchanging gifts and a feast based on traditional African harvest festivals. For many, Kwanzaa is an additional celebration to Christmas, not something that replaces Christmas. What order do you light Kwanzaa candles? The black candle is the first Kwanzaa candle lit in the kinara, or candle holder. The next candle lit is the red candle on the end and it alternates between the red and green candles, left to right, working outward in. One candle is lit each night of Kwanzaa, so the first night you’ll do Kwanzaa Umoja activities, the second night of Kwanzaa you’ll do Kuji, etc. Kwanzaa Daily Activities: Order You Light Kwanzaa Candles for the Kwanzaa 7 Days Kwanzaa Day 1: Black Candle for Umoja Kwanzaa Day 2: Red Candle (left side on the end) for Kuji. Kwanzaa Day 3: Green Candle (right side on end) for Ujima. Kwanzaa Day 4: Red Candle (next to the previously lit Red Candle) for Ujamaa. Kwanzaa Day 5: Green Candle (back on right side next to previously lit green candle) for Kwanzaa Nia. Kwanzaa Day 6: Last Red Candle for Kuumba. Kwanzaa Day 7: Last Green Candle for Imani
