                                                       WORD

First Reading: Genesis 3:8-15
Immediately after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, they hide from God. Neither takes responsibility for their sin,
instead blaming each other, the snake, and even God. The curse on the snake was understood as a messianic
prophecy by the early church, who associated Eve’s “offspring” with Christ.

88
When they heard the sound of GOD strolling in the garden in the evening breeze, the Man and his
Wife hid in the trees of the garden, hid from GOD.
9 GOD called to the Man: “Where are you?”

10 He said, “I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked. And I hid.”

11 GOD said, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from that tree I told you not to eat

from?”
12 The Man said, “The Woman you gave me as a companion, she gave me fruit from the tree, and,

yes, I ate it.”
GOD said to the Woman, “What is this that you’ve done?”
13 “The serpent seduced me,” she said, “and I ate.”

14-15 GOD told the serpent:

“Because you’ve done this, you’re cursed,
cursed beyond all cattle and wild animals,
Cursed to slink on your belly
and eat dirt all your life.

                                                                                                                          3
I’m declaring war between you and the Woman,
   between your offspring and hers.
He’ll wound your head,
   you’ll wound his heel.”

L: The word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm: Psalm 130
Wait for the LORD, for with the LORD there is steadfast love. (Ps. 130:7)

1-2 Help, GOD—I’ve hit rock bottom!
Master, hear my cry for help!
Listen hard! Open your ears!
Listen to my cries for mercy.
3-4 If you, GOD, kept records on wrongdoings,

     who would stand a chance?
As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit,
     and that’s why you’re worshiped.
5-6 I pray to GOD—my life a prayer—

and wait for what he’ll say and do.
My life’s on the line before God, my Lord,
     waiting and watching till morning,
     waiting and watching till morning.
7-8 O Israel, wait and watch for GOD—

     with GOD’s arrival comes love,
with GOD’s arrival comes generous redemption.
No doubt about it—he’ll redeem Israel,
buy back Israel from captivity to sin.

THE HOLY GOSPEL
The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 3rd chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord!

Gospel: Mark 3:20-35
In response to charges that he is possessed, Jesus wonders aloud how anyone who is demon-possessed can cast
out demons. Those who do the will of God are possessed by the Holy Spirit, siblings of Christ.

20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not
even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said,
“He is out of his mind.”
22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by

Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”
23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive

out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided
against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot
stand; his end has come. 27In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up.
Then he can plunder the strong man’s house. 28Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins
and every slander they utter, 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven;
they are guilty of eternal sin.” 30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”
31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A

                                                                                                              4
crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for
you.”33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.
34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my

brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is by brother and sister and mother.”
The Gospel of the Lord!
Praise to you, O Christ!

Pastor: Children are invited to join me around the table for communion. Together we will share
in this special meal and learn more about what communion means when we share with one
another.

Earlier we learned that we are joined together by God. This special time of eating and drinking is
one way we celebrate and come together as one community. When we come together, say
prayers, and take bread and wine or juice we believe God is present with us and makes us
close friends, helping us leave this place better able to love one another and our neighbors.

Each time we eat this special meal the pastor says very special words. Listen carefully while I
say them and watch my hands while I say these words.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Now that these important words have been said, we have remembered what Jesus did and
taught at the last supper.

Next we say the Lord’s prayer because Jesus asked us to say it each time we eat and drink.
Let’s learn about this prayer...

Our Father, who art in heaven,
      hallowed be thy name,
      thy kingdom come,
      thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
      Give us this day our daily bread;
      and forgive us our trespasses,
      as we forgive those
        who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
      but deliver us from evil.
      For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
      forever and ever. Amen.

                                                                                                         7
Now we can share in bread and wine or grape juice, both come from vines, and be one family
with God. Are you ready?

Okay. Let’s start with the bread. This is Jesus’ gift for you, eat and be filled.

Next we’ll have the wine or juice. This is Jesus’ gift for you, drink and know love.

Amen.

Thank you all. You can return to your seats with the people who brought you to church today.
