Renew My Church: Divine Providence and Waiting on the Holy Spirit
Our Grouping Feedback & Discernment Team presented to the Executive Committee of the
Renew My Church Commission. It was a very good discussion about the local realities of our
parishes and communities.
1. The Executive Committee formed a recommendation for the full
Renew My Church Commission.
2. The Commission did convene and discussed the recommendation,
ensuring that the Grouping Team’s feedback and the foundational
principals for structural viability and vitality have been fully
considered.
3. Per Canon Law (i.e., Church law), the Commission forwards the
recommendation to the Presbyteral Council (an elected body of
priests) for their consultation with Cardinal Cupich.
4. The Cardinal will discuss the recommendation with the Presbyteral
Council and after this consultation, the Cardinal will make a final
decision.
5. We expect to learn of the Cardinal’s decision at the end of January. As more details emerge
specific to timing, we will share that with everyone.
What are we to do as we wait? When we feel that so much hangs in the balance? When we are
uncertain as our Lord calls us to step out onto the water and meet Him? St. Paul tells us very
directly: “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.” (1 Th 5: 16-17)
Pray for Cardinal Cupich, our bishops, the Presbyteral Council, St. Athanasius, St. Joan of Arc,
St. Mary, St. Nicholas and Sheil Center, and the lay faithful who are leading the work of
renewal within our archdiocese.
Keep in mind that this is only the beginning of the renewal process for our parish. Once the
decision has been made, we enter into the next phases of Renew My Church: Organizational
Transition and Building the New Reality – phases which focus on structural and spiritual
renewal within our parish. And remember that no matter what the future holds, our Lord already
holds us. We are instruments of His grace and He will use us to make disciples, build
communities, and inspire witness

Renueva mi Iglesia: Providencia Divina y Esperando en el Espíritu Santo
Nuestro Equipo de Agrupación de Comentarios y Discernimiento se presentó al Comité
Ejecutivo de la Comisión Renovar Mi Iglesia. Fue una muy buena discusión sobre las
realidades locales de nuestras parroquias y comunidades.
1. El Comité Ejecutivo formó ya una recomendación para toda la Comisión Renovar Mi
Iglesia.
2. La Comisión convocó y discutió la recomendación, asegurando que
la retroalimentación del Equipo de Agrupación y los principios
fundamentales para la viabilidad y vitalidad estructural se hayan
considerado completamente.
3. Según la Ley Canónica (es decir, la ley de la Iglesia), la Comisión
envía la recomendación al Consejo Presbiteral (un cuerpo electo de
sacerdotes) para su consulta con el Cardenal Cupich.

Ore por el Cardenal Cupich, nuestros obispos, el Consejo Presbiteral, San Atanasio, Santa
Juana de Arco, Santa María, San Nicolás y el Centro Sheil, y los fieles laicos que están
liderando el trabajo de renovación dentro de nuestra arquidiócesis.
Tenga en cuenta que este es solo el comienzo del proceso de renovación de nuestra parroquia.

Pope Francis continues reform of religious life
One area of church life that Pope Francis has quietly sought to reform is religious life, namely the communities
of nuns, religious sisters, monks and friars, and in particular the newer ones. Francis, a member of the Society
of Jesus, one of the best-known religious congregations in the world, has sought to tackle problems in recently
established orders. He has also publicly acknowledged the sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse of nuns
both from priests and within their congregations.
He addressed some of these concerns during a recent meeting of the Congregation for the Institutes of Conse-
crated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life, the Vatican body with responsibility for religious communities.
The Jesuit pope asked them to focus on “abuses of power” within orders, and referenced a recently published
book, “Il Velo di Silenzio” (“The Veil of Silence: Abuse, Violence, Frustrations in Female Religious Life”),
by Salvatore Cernuzio, a journalist for the Holy See’s official media channel, Vatican News. It contains the
testimonies of 11 religious sisters who had suffered psychological and spiritual abuses by their superior. One
of the sisters explains that after reporting that she had been sexually abused by a priest, she was told by her
superior that she must have “provoked” him.
In his Dec. 11 address, the pope warned about founders who see themselves as “above the church” and leaders
who stay in office too long and accumulate too much power. The role of the superior in a community changed
following the reforms of religious life at the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council, moving away from a rigidly
hierarchal model.

En el Sínodo, la Iglesia es una comunidad que escucha al Espíritu
Santo
El domingo 10 de octubre, en la basílica de San Pedro en el Vaticano, el papa Francisco abrió el Sínodo con el
nombre: “Por una Iglesia sinodal: comunión, participación y misión”. Este evento fue el comienzo de un
proceso que durará dos años. La clausura será en octubre de 2023.
La traducción clásica de la palabra sínodo es simplemente una reunión eclesiástica. Este tipo de reuniones han
existido desde casi el comienzo de nuestra fe cristiana. En la última sesión del Concilio Vaticano II, el papa
Pablo VI creó la oficina permanente del Sínodo de Obispos, cuyo trabajo es facilitar que los obispos del
mundo, bajo el liderazgo del Papa, se reúnan a dialogar sobre temas importantes para la Iglesia. Esta oficina ha
dado muchos frutos en forma de documentos que el Papa escribe después de que los obispos le entregan las
conclusiones de la reunión.
Ahora, el papa Francisco nos está invitando a que pensemos en el concepto de sínodo de una manera diferente
y más ambiciosa. Quiere que veamos la sinodalidad como una característica constitutiva de la Iglesia, es decir,
