March 7, 2021 Third Sunday of Lent From the Pastors Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Welcome to Oculi Mei Sunday. For those who have read the last two bulletins, you know that I am touching on the names of the Sun- days in Lent, which derive from the words of the Introit, that is Entrance Antiphon. Today is Oculi Mei Sunday, since the opening words of the Introit are “My Eyes”, taken from Psalm 25: “My eyes are ever upon the LORD, who frees my feet from the snare. Look upon me, have pity on me, for I am alone and afflicted.” One of the great things about the Psalms, is that they combine so many feelings and emotions , as well as expressions of Faith and de- scriptions of God’s Glory. They also tend to reflect opposing aspects of our situations, such as when we are “alone and afflicted” we can also recognize that it is God who protects us and saves us from our situation, out of pity, which is born out of love. How often do we feel as if we are alone, as if there is no one else to help us, to free us? Yet, we know this beautiful prayer reaches to the ears of God Himself, and He answers us in our poverty and pain, raising us up from sin and death. People will ask me, how do I know that God exists, or that He even cares for human beings. That God exists is complex, rather than complicated, because there are so many aspects of my experience which point towards God’s existence, and also to His love for us. Knowing that God exists, I also recognize that Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Trinity, and that by coming among us as a hu- man being, He revealed the very Nature of God, and the love that He has for each of us. Recognizing that Christ established His Church here on earth, to be His Body, which is one of the great natures of the Church, He is present in our communal existence. Those who believe that they can be in relationship with Christ, without being in relationship with their brothers and sisters in Christ deceive themselves. While Christ gave Himself for each and everyone of us as individuals, He calls us into Communion with each other and with Himself. Ultimately, we are not alone, because Christ is with us, and because we are part of His Body, the Church. With the realization that we are all called to be part of the Body of Christ on Earth, to live out our lives in community, it is my hope that this will be the final month of the great isolation of the people of God. In another week, it will be a year since we were first ordered to shut down parish offices, activities, and the celebration of our Sacramental life. Although we have gradually returned to a more nor- mal style of operation, beginning of course with the return to the public celebration of Mass, and then opening our offices for parish business, there is still a way to go until we are back to where we need to be. If everything continues to progress with the vaccinations and reduction in cases of Covid, there should be no reason to think we will not be able to return throughout the Spring and Summer months. Next month, we will begin registration for Religious Education classes, and classes will be held in the Parish Center building, rather than online. Other activities will return to normal as the months progress, and I am sure that we will be back in full swing, with proper safety precautions taken, to allow for greater community life. We realize though, that at the heart of our life as a Church Community, that the celebration of the Mass is the most important thing we do. The reception of the Blessed Sacrament, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, is what brings us all together as One, which is why we call it Holy Communion. While we live out our call to Christ in small communities, beginning with the Domestic Church, in our own homes as family, and on larger scales as parish groups and the parish as a whole, we also recognize that we are part of the Universal Church (that’s why we’re called Catholics, from the Greek for Universal). As such, next weekend we will welcome Fr. Eloy Romero-Rojas, from Cross Catholic Outreach, who will be at all of our Masses. Pax, Fr. Henry

296. “…let us stand beside our brothers and sisters in need, sharing our spiritual and material goods with them.” - Pope Francis Almsgiving in Lent During the Lenten Season we are asked to pray, fast and give alms. Lent is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need - whether it is for their material, emotional or spiritu- al needs. And when you practice fasting and abstinence during these forty days, please remember those of our neighbors who are hungry, and consider sharing your gifts with them. One way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports programs that help to feed people in our community each year through Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach pro- grams. For more information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal, please visit CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or call 516-678-5800 ext. 296.
Please welcome the priest visiting our parish next weekend. He comes to us from Cross Catholic Outreach and will share some touching stories about the amazing work Catholic missions are accomplishing world- wide. Since Cross Catholic Outreach empowers existing Catholic missions, its program are extremely cost- effective, and the majority of the resources it collects go into program services that help the poorest of the poor around the world.
