Tuesday – Reading Comprehension

   LO: To understand texts
   The Good Thieves Chapter 11

You can listen to Chapter 11 on Microsoft Teams
(Class Materials  Class Novel – The Good Thieves).

1. Using a dictionary, define these words:
 fury – wild or violet anger
 revulsion – a sense of disgust and loathing
 darted – move or run somewhere suddenly or rapidly
 conquer – successfully overcome (a problem or weakness)
 defied – openly resist or refuse to obey
 teetering – move or balance unsteadily

2. What does it mean ‘Fear caught at her body and dragged her backwards’?
Vita was scared, and she could feel the fear throughout her whole body, and this caused her
to move backwards – possibly so she couldn’t be seen by Sorrotore.

3. Why was Vita scared?
Vita was scared because she had just seen Sorrotore and he had seen her. She has stolen
a ring from him and hidden it, he knows she has it and has already tried to get it back. Vita
knows Sorrotore isn’t the kind of man to mess with.

4. How did Vita, Arkady and Samuel exit the wings? Which word tells you this?
They exited the wings quickly, the word ‘darted’ tells us this.

5. What made the props cupboard chaotic?
The props cupboard was full of masks, capes and a donkey’s head which were all balanced
and stacked unsteadily on shelves. There was also a pile of false moustaches. This was
made more chaotic by the three children trying to hide in there.

6. What was Arkady’s idea to ‘blend in’?
Arkady grabbed his father’s top hat and a moustache and gave these to Vita to try to
disguise her and make her blend in.

7. Why did Samuel push Vita to fall in behind a family?
Samuel pushed Vita to fall in behind a family to help her blend in and to “look as if she
belonged”. The family helped to disguise Vita. Vita wanted to ‘look normal’ and not stand out
so that Sorrotore wouldn’t be able to see or recognise her.

8. ‘It was Silk, her mouth turned down like a horseshoe, her eyes focused on something behind
   Vita’
What does this tell us about what Silk has seen? How does she feel about what she has
   seen?
This tells us that Silk is not happy about what she has seen. The shape of a horseshoe is the
same as a frown or unhappy face, this helps us to picture Silk’s facial expression, which is
not a happy one. She is clearly unhappy or possibly even scared about what she has seen.

Tuesday – Maths Problem Solving (Special Quadrilaterals)

1). 2).

                                             Calculate the missing angle y

They are both 360° because they are
quadrilaterals and the interior angles of 85° + 63° + 49° = 197°
all quadrilaterals always total 360°. 360° - 197° = 163°
                                             y = 163°
3). 4).

Calculate the missing angle a

115° + 105° + 105° = 325° No, a fourth would be needed to make a
360° - 325° = 35° square or rectangle so exactly 3 is not
a = 35°                                      possible.
5). 6).

 The orange trapezium has no right
angles but the green one has two
 They both have one pair of parallel
          sides
 The orange trapezium has two
          acute angles and two obtuse
          angles 113° + 91° + 87° = 291°
       The green trapezium has 360° - 291° = 69°
perpendicular sides but the orange r = 69°
          one does not

1). 2).
Which of these triangles are isosceles?
Explain your decisions.

                                           360° - (55° + 55°) = 250°
The left and middle triangles are because 250° ÷ 2 = 125°
they have two identical length a and b both measure 125°
sides/interior angles. The missing angle
in the third triangle can’t be 82° because
this would not total 180° when added to
the other 82° and the 26° angle.
3).

The sum of internal angles increases by 180° when the number of sides increases by 1
because another triangle can be drawn and the interior angles of a triangle total 180°.
5). 6).

                                                      90° + 90° + 61° = 241°
e.g. 360° - 241° = 119° so u = 119°

Mr Maguire Group – Tuesday Answers
1). 2).

A triangle has been drawn carefully.

You are told that the biggest angle is
20° larger than the second biggest angle and 40° larger
                                    than the smallest angle.

Work out how big each angle is.

                                    80° + 60° + 40° = 180°

3). 4).

720° ÷ 6 = 120°
120° + 120° = 240° Dora = Heptagon = 900°
360° - 240° = 120° Tommy = Hexagon = 720°
120° ÷ 2 = 60° Alex = Pentagon = 540°
a = 60°
5). 6).

w = 38°
y = 38°
x = 56°
z = 56°
w + x = 94°
y + z = 94°
                                                     33° + 21° = 54°
                                                    180° - 54° = 126°
                                             360° - 126° = 234° so b = 234°

Wednesday – Maths Arithmetic

Daily flashback:
Wednesday – History – British Empire and ownership of North America

1 - 1607. Colonising is when a militarily strong country invades and takes over another
area of the world.

2 - Some people thought they would make a lot of money in new goods in America that
could not be found in Europe, such as tobacco. Others left to find freedom of religion or
just to make a new start. Some wanted to be in charge and change things that they did
not like back at England.

3 - Great Britain made new taxes and other laws that angered some people in the
colonies.

4 - It declared that Americans were no longer under British rule and it led to the creation of
the United States of America.

5 - The Continental Army (army of the colonies), led by George Washington, defeated the
armies of the British Empire.

1). 2).

Jack chose a number.

He multiplied the number by 7

Then he added 85

His answer was 953

What number did Jack choose?

953 – 85 = 868
                                            1kg of potatoes = £1.50
                                            1/2kg of potatoes = £0.75
868 ÷ 7 = 124
                                            So the potatoes cost £2.25
He chose 124
                                            1/2kg of carrots = £0.90

In total Jack spends £3.15 so will get £1.85

Here is a design on a square grid.

Complete the design so that it is
                                            symmetrical about the mirror line.

                                            Use a ruler.
There are 2,400 leaflets in a box.

William and Ally take 450 leaflets each.

Adam and Chen share the rest of the
leaflets equally.

How many leaflets does Adam get?

450 x 2 = 900

2,400 – 900 = 1,500

1,500 ÷ 2 = 750

Adam gets 750 leaflets.
