Adam Wile, IWC Board Secretary, took the Different Together Pledge! Ann Mcleod, IWC Community Connections Manager, took the Different Together Pledge! The Immigrant Welcome Centre encourages you to take the pledge and
either email it to us or tag the Immigrant Welcome Centre of North Vancouver Island and encourage on Facebook. Encourage your friends to take the pledge as well." Meet Our New Staff Meet Kristine Salzmann! My name is Kristine and I’m excited to join the Welcoming Communities Coalition (WCC) and Immigrant Welcome Centre as the WCC’s new Community Connections Assistant/Intake Worker based in Courtenay. My educational background is in journalism, and in more recent years I've worked as a freelance copywriter and in marketing for a non-profit recreational sports organization. I was also on the volunteer board of an early childhood resource and drop-in centre in Surrey which helped young families connect through play. My family moved here from South Surrey last summer, and we love that we are so close to the rivers, forests, and mountains. I have two young children, and when not spending time with my family I like to play ultimate (frisbee) and have just started getting into tennis (as an ultimate replacement, as I am adjusting to not playing nearly as much ulti as I did on the mainland!). I’m looking forward to
being a part of an organization that has such a positive impact on the community. Welcoming Communities Coalition Meets Via Zoom The Welcoming Communities Coalition met with members of its Comox Valley Steering Committee in June to prioritize community project ideas for 2021. We are looking forward to sharing our plans with you when they are brought to fruition! Learn more about the Welcoming Communities Coalition at immigrantwelcome.ca/coalition. LINC Campbell River Goes to Art Gallery
Just before classes ended in late June, LINC 1-2 and LINC 5-7 students enjoyed a fieldtrip to the Campbell River Art Gallery. Students enjoyed exploring artist Karen Tam’s exhibition Autumn Tigers. Tam’s artwork exploring the history of Chinese immigrants on Vancouver Island, led to some great discussions with students sharing some of their own history and immigration experiences in Campbell River. Following the exhibition, students enthusiastically joined in the Hope Rocks project with each student painting a rock with the word hope, and sharing their vision of what hope means for the future.
A Time to Grow - Community Garden Courtenay There will be some new rules regarding social distancing but the Community Garden built by and for our LINC students will be opening soon. That is some well needed happy news! It is located in Lush Valley’s Share the Harvest Community Garden. Students will have space in one of two plots and the harvests are shared. Please call 250-338-6359 or email: admin@immigrantwelcome.ca to for more information.
