Knife Angel draws in the crowds and educates hundreds about knife crime The Knife Angel’s visit to Middlesbrough is almost at an end, after being seen by hundreds of people from across the country. The sculpture has drawn crowds to Centre Square in Middlesbrough since it arrived on Monday 5th August and will make its departure on Sunday 1st September. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner worked with Cleveland Police, Middlesbrough Council and the Chris Cave Foundation to bring the Angel to Middlesbrough – it’s first trip to the North East. A range of engagement activities have taken place during the Angel’s visit, including: Presentations for young people about the dangers of Knife Crime, presented by Cleveland Police and the Chris Cave Foundation. A graffiti workshop by the world famous Graffiti Kings, who travelled from London to work with young people on spray paint art. A comic drawing workshop featuring the Knife Angel, led by Teesside University comic lecturer Julian Lawrence. A visit from Middlesbrough FC player Dael Fry. To say goodbye to the Angel – and to remember those who have died in violent incidents – the Chris Cave Foundation are hosting a vigil on Saturday 31st August. People are invited to gather in Centre Square in Middlesbrough from 6pm and a non-denominational service will begin at 7:15pm. Innovative approach to domestic abuse sees reduction in offending
A multi-agency approach to dealing with domestic abuse perpetrators in Cleveland has seen a welcome reduction in offending. MATAC (Multi-agency Tasking and Coordination) sees 23 agencies come together to share information and take an in-depth look into the background and behaviour of domestic abusers. Often, when agencies get to the root cause of offending, they find that individuals have witnesses abuse through their own childhood or have unaddressed mental health issues. MATAC works to address these issues in the hope that the perpetrator can understand the devastating impact of their behaviour and stop the abuse. The project has just passed its first year and of the 43 people that started, 22 have been discharged after a significant reduction in their offending and have not committed any further abuse offences according to police records. MATAC was introduced by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner through the Whole Systems Approach work, supported by funding from the Home Office. Permanent knife bins to surrender knives rolled out across Cleveland Permanent knife bins to surrender knives and sharp objects are being rolled out across Cleveland. The roll out of the bins in Stockton, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland follows the instalment of a permanent bin at Middlesbrough Police Station earlier this year and ties in with the arrival of the Knife Angel in Centre Square, in Middlesbrough. Students from Stockton Riverside College and NETA Training will be putting together their own piece of artwork with the knives that have been handed in.
The permanent knife bins are located at the four main police stations in Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland. The stations are open weekdays from 8am-8pm. Boro Angels take North Ormesby under their wing
Boro Angels are taking a key Middlesbrough community under their wing.
The Angels – already a huge success in central Middlesbrough – have arrived in North Ormesby. The initiative aims to help the vulnerable and those in need of support and is an extension of the valued work that the Boro Angels carry out for Middlesbrough’s night-time economy. Boro Angels Chair and Trustee David Gee officially launched the new pilot at North Ormesby Community Hub on August 14th. The event was supported by Middlesbrough Mayor, Andy Preston, Police and Crime Commissioner, Barry Coppinger and Middlesbrough’s Head of Public Protection, Judith Hedgley. PCC writes to Home Secretary asking for government rethink on serious violence funding Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger has written to Home Secretary Priti Patel, asking the government to address inequalities in their funding to tackle serious violence, which has seen Cleveland excluded from a share of £98m to address the issue It was announced that eighteen PCCs have been awarded another £35 million to set up Violence Reduction Units, as part of the government’s pledge to tackle serious violence across the country. Cleveland is not one of these eighteen areas selected, despite having the fourth highest level of recorded violent crime per 1,000 population in the country.
