Late-summer mosquito populations have spiked in part to the heavy rains and standing water on warm days. The threat of mosquito bites will continue until Iowa’s first hard frost, which tends to be in October. The City of Newton will continue using mosquito dunks in public areas to reduce population numbers and there are certain precautions residents can take as well. LIBRARY JULY 2018 OVERVIEW MONARCH BUTTERFLIES ARE HATCHING! • 1,082 check-outs The Newton Public Library has been Butterfly Central in the Children’s • 7,373 people visited the Library Department this month. SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LIBRARY CARD SIGN - UP MONTH! Since 1987, Library Card Sign- up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. Libraries work to remind parents and youth that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. To celebrate, The Library is giving a Library Lotto scratch off ticket to every patron that checks out an item or applies for a library card. Lotto prizes vary from a Kindle Fire Drawing, Library Mug, Library Tote bag or fruit snacks and candy for all ages. We are also asking patrons to fill in blurb bubbles on historical photos of the Library and posting them on Facebook for people to vote for the winner. And lastly, all library card replacements are free the entire month. Stop in this month to get a library card, replace your card, or win a prize when checking out items! 2
HIGH - SPEED INTERNET CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 1000 BOOKS BEFORE STILL A MAJOR PROBLEM KINDERGARTEN GRADUATES! FOR QUARTER OF AMERICANS August was a busy month for our young, voracious readers with 6 kids reaching their 1000 Books Before Kindergarten goal!
