Stoney Nakoda Drummers & Dancers September 30 has recently been known as Orange Shirt Day, a day that is meant to recognize the tragic history of loss and the lasting effects of Canada’s residential school system. It honours Indigenous residential school survivors, their families and communities as a vital part of the process of reconciliation. The legislation was passed to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday, called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In partnership with local Indigenous communities, including the Stoney Nakoda, this event is to observe and participate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On the Road with Protective Services With kids returning to school this month, Black Diamond Protective Services would like to remind residents to be prepared for the increased number of cars and kids on the road. Please slow down and pay particular attention to pedestrians in School and Playground Zones. On school days 30 km/hr is the speed limit from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm, and the same applies to the Playground Zones. If you are dropping your kids off at school, please set a great example for your children by obeying the rules of the road. It is also a good idea to review road safety with your kids as they will be behind the wheel one day. Ice Ice Baby! The ice is now in and available for bookings at the Oilfields Regional Arena (ORA). Please continue to access the office from the back alley on the south side. 2021 Municipal Elections Nominations are open, and the Returning Officer is hiring! Along with the municipal ballots, voters will be able to cast ballots for the School Board Trustee of Ward 1, Foothills School Division, and for the Senate and Referendum elections as well. Nominations close Monday, September 20 at 12 Noon. Prospective candidates can file their nomination papers at any time before 12 Noon on Nomination Day, waiting for Nomination Day is no longer required. Call the Returning Officer at 403-933-4348 with any questions. Be sure to visit the Town’s Municipal Elections webpage regularly to be well-informed about becoming a candidate, who’s running for office, where and when to vote and, of course, the final election results.
