English This half term, we are looking at Greek myths, with the aim of writing our own. We will be analysing the ingredients of a Greek myth, and how to create effective characters and settings. Later on in the half term, we will be looking at creating playscripts, taking inspiration from a range of Greek myths. Grammar lessons are taught alongside texts to show their use in context (e.g. relative clauses). Spellings rules are specifically taught, with spelling lists sent home on a Friday and pupils tested at the start of the following week.
Vocabulary Vocabulary plays such an important part in reading and writing. It is crucial that children are exposed to as many new words as possible across all subjects. New words are taught every day (Word Wall) and revisited at the end of the week. Pupils in Year 5 have their own vocab books to enter new words and definitions to.
Reading in Year 5 – individual reading Dedicated time in school week to hearing children read on a 1:1 basis. Done by either the teacher, TA or support staff. Helps to monitor fluency, comprehension and text understanding. Comments left in Reading Records and signed by the member of staff.
Reading in Year 5 – Reading Plus 3 x 30 minute lessons a week dedicated to Reading Plus. Reading Plus is a literacy intervention that develops the fluency, comprehension and motivation students need to be successful readers. It is personalized to each student’s interests and academic strengths – and builds cross curricular content area knowledge. The text may be presented in either the guided or independent format, providing scaffolds to improve mental focus and visual efficiency. After reading a selection, students answer ten thoughtful, skill-aligned comprehension questions. Vocabulary-related questions are also included.
