SMILE: Conversational English Literacy Programme 2018 Annual Report from Uplands Outreach Celebrating 20 years! Uplands Outreach is delighted to present this annual report, celebrating the 2018 achievements of the SMILE Conversational English Literacy Programme, now in its 20th year at Uplands. The SMILE programme builds bridges between two communities of learners in Mpumalanga: Uplands College pupils and Maqamela Primary School learners. Through the love of English and conversation, the programme builds confidence in rural Grade 4 learners, while developing leadership and service skills in pupils from Uplands College. Impact in numbers A total of 99 Grade 4 learners from Maqamela Primary participated in 2018. A total of 25 Uplands 1 College pupils registered and participated in SMILE throughout the year. In addition, three teachers/facilitators, one intern from the Learners for Excellence programme, three volunteers, two schools, and two communities continued to be inspired and touched by the SMILE programme. In total, 19 SMILE sessions were held in 2018 with Uplands pupils and Maqamela learners. 99 2 ‘Bongi the Rhino’ books were handed out to the learners, and the story was read aloud by Mama V and Uplands pupils. A fun 20th celebration was held at Maqamela Primary in September 2018. What difference did SMILE make? The cohort of Grade 4 learners from Maqamela scored 46% on 3 their baseline test of conversational English at the beginning of the year. The summative test in September 2018 produced an average mark of 87%, which is an improvement of 41 percentage points. This is a remarkable improvement! Impact in words 20 years of SMILE! Wow – this is something special. It is such a privilege to be a part of this enriching programme. ~ Violah Moya (Mama V), Uplands Outreach What’s wonderful about SMILE is that the education goes both ways. The learners from Maqamela may be learning conversational English, but the Uplands pupils learn so much about different cultures, effective communication and service. Both groups gain so much confidence too. ~ Sharon van Reenen, Uplands College We feel very grateful for the time we have to get to know the learners from Maqamela Primary School. It helps us appreciate everything we have at Uplands that we usually take for granted. We love seeing how happy and excited the learners are to visit our school. ~ Uplands College Pupil I love SMILE, and I like everything about Uplands. I enjoy to colour and sing and speak English. It is great to learn from our teachers (Uplands pupils) here. ~ Maqamela Learner SMILE’S CORE OBJECTIVE: Creating a community mind-set by learning English together on a peer-to-peer basis (while having fun!)
