Condolences are flowing to the family and friends of a mother and son involved in a single
vehicle accident on their way to a doctor’s appointment in Longreach.
On 16th February around 9am, Christine Thompson aged 72 and her son, Michael aged 50
were driving on the Landsborough Highway heading to Longreach when the accident
occurred.
It is a tragic accident that has sent shockwaves through the townsfolk of Winton.
The Thompsons were long time residents moving to the town over 25 years ago and residing
in Bloomfield St.
Christine is remembered as a creative person who loved her arts and crafts.
Michael will be missed by his mates.

WINTON HERALD NOVEMBER 1948
On Tuesday a fire completely destroyed the Bakehouse and Contents belonging to Mr E.J.H.
Coughlin of Winton. The siren was given at 4.45 pm and although the brigade was promptly on
the scene, the north wind prevented anything being saved. A considerable quantity of flour
was also destroyed and about 20 Pounds worth of Baked Bread. The cause of the fire was
unknown but it was presumed that the heat from this aided by the very hot weather caused
the disastrous outbreak.

ELINOR EAST – 90 YEARS YOUNG
Article submitted by Jeff Close
Guests travelled from Townsville, Brisbane and Longreach recently to help celebrate the 90 th
birthday of Elinor East. A morning tea was held at the Winton Bowls Club, with catering in the
capable hands of daughter Wendy Geddis and daughter- in- law Gayle East, who also made
the cake. A highlight for Elinor was the gathering of “family and lovely friends.” For over 20
years Elinor was a welcome sight in the district, notebook and pencil in one hand and camera
in the other, reporting Winton news for the Longreach Leader.
Elinor was born In Winton on the 19th February 1932, eldest
child of Jim and Margaret Mitchell of Teviot. She was
educated at home for her primary years and then completed
Year 12 at PGC in Warwick. “It was a long train trip – Winton
to Rockhampton, Rockhampton to Brisbane and then Brisbane
to Warwick,” Elinor recalled. Elinor married John East on May
7th 1953 at Teviot, so a 70th wedding anniversary is looming. In
acknowledging her 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 5 great-
grandchildren, Elinor thanked all for their attendance and put
in an early date claimer for ten years time.

AN ARTICLE FROM A TIME GONE BY
DEATH OF MR A G FRASER.
Article submitted by WDHS
It is with regret we have to chronicle the death of Mr Alexander George Fraser, of
Manuka Station, news of which was received last week by cable from Lady Baillie, a
relative of the deceased gentleman. Mr Fraser, in conjunction with Mr George Baillie, a
cousin of his (since dead), and Mr WS Donald, bought Manuka in 1882, Mr Fraser being
the managing partner.
In 1891 Mr Fraser took over the station, on which he resided until quite recently. He
was for many years a member of the Winton Divisional Board, and as Chairman of that
body – a position he occupied for a long time – his courteous manner and firm rulings
proved him to be eminently fitted for that post. Though not an ardent sportsman, he
was a member of then Winton Amateur Race Club, in which he took a great deal of
interest. The deceased gentleman was always to the fore in any movement that went
for the good of the community, and his death will be a loss to the district. Rather
inclined to conservatism in habit as well as politics, Mr Fraser, from his kindly manner
and mode of speech, still made friends in all grades.
The cause of death is supposed to have been something of a cancerous nature, though
it is not absolutely known. In February last he was compelled to go south for medical
advice, and for some time was in a private hospital in Sydney, where the doctors
informed him, it would be necessary to perform an operation. At this time, he had fully
made up his mind to go to England, and seeing that the thought of the operation preyed
on his mind, and that he craved to get to the Old Country, the doctors, believing there
was little hope of recovery, at last agreed to his making the journey without having the
operation performed. Mr Fraser sailed in May last by the Aberdeen White Star liner
Nineveh, going by the Cape in preference to the Red Sea. He lived long enough to
accomplish his wish of seeing home again, arriving in London on July 21st, and dying on
the 3rd August.
Mr Fraser was 57 years of age, having been born in 1841 in Argyleshire, Scotland, and
was one of the family of Lovat Frasers, and closely related to Lord Lovat. Entering the
army, he held a commission at 19, and served some years in India, from thence he went
to Buenos Ayres, South America, where he took up a sheep ranch, leaving that for
Australia, where after some residence in New South Wales, he came to Manuka. The
deceased gentleman was of a most sanguine temperament, and almost to the last his
letters were full of what he intended to do on his return to Manuka.

WINTON LOCAL SHINES IN THE CITY
Article submitted by Carolyn Flint
My daughter Casey Flint is featured in Money Magazine this
month. She mentions growing up in the outback town of Winton
Qld.
We still live in town at the Matilda Motel, however Casey is back
in Sydney now. Casey came back home to Winton for a few
months at the end of last year while she was working from
home. Which is when Money Magazine called her and asked for
                                               an interview.

The article talks about where she is working,
what she does and the work environment now.
