P H A N TO M F R I E N D Phantom Friend has been running at CHA now for a number of years. Many staff take part, it is similar to ‘Secret Santa’ but runs for the duration of an academic year. Staff are given another member of staff's name and become their ‘Phantom Friend’. Throughout the year random acts of kindness are shown in the form of small gifts such as biscuits, chocolate, books and flowers. Those staff who take part say they get a lot of pleasure from it, coming to work in the morning and finding a gift on your desk or pigeonhole however big or small, can give a real boost to your day. At the end of the year staff then reveal they were the Phantom Friend! CASTLEHALLACADEMY @CASTLE_HALL CASTLE_HALL1 CASTLEHALL.COM Page 4

Mental health and wellbeing Mental health in young people Research shows that 1 in 5 young people aged 5-16 are likely to have a mental health problem. This means that in a class of 30, 6 young people might be struggling with their mental health. This has increased by 50% over the last 3 years. Research also shows that 75% of young people aren’t getting the help and support that they need. Mental health at Castle Hall Academy At Castle Hall Academy, we believe that everyone has mental health, and it is important that we teach students to be aware of their own mental health as well as the mental health of others. There are lots of things that we do within school to support the mental health of our students. Our personal development curriculum teaches about mental health explicitly, as well as looking at wider topics such as preparing for the future, careers, and physical, sexual, and emotional health. Where students might require further support with their mental health, Castle Hall Academy employs an emotional wellbeing support worker, who sees a number of students on a weekly basis. This is based on need, and referrals are made by heads of year and the inclusion team. If school feels that there is a greater need for support, referrals can be made, with your consent, to external agencies who support young people with their mental health. Thriving Kirklees Thriving Kirklees is where you can access any support services that your child might need for their mental health and wellbeing. https://www.thrivingkirklees.org.uk/ Thriving Kirklees work with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Children’s Emotional Health and Wellbeing Services (ChEWS) to provide support for young people with mental health concerns, whether this is early intervention work or more complex work. They will work with both the young person and the parent to support your child’s mental health. Referrals for further support can be made by school, by a parent or carer, or by a young person. JANUARY COVID TESTING You may be aware that the Government has asked schools to carry out one lateral flow test (LFT) followed by a home test 3 days later. We have therefore replanned our return to school in January. Students will now return on a staggered basis to allow for staff to carry out the lateral flow testing: Tuesday 4th January 2022 Students taking an LFT test arrive at: All other students of that year group arrive at: Year 11 8:30am 9:30am Year 10 10:00am 11:00am Year 7 12:00pm 1:00pm Wednesday 5th January 2022 Students taking an LFT test arrive at: All other students of that year group arrive at: Year 9 9:30am 10:30am Year 8 11:40am 12:40am Please note this is a new round of testing therefore all parents need to re -sign up and give consent, even if you have been involved in the testing programme this year. To participate in the testing process in January and subsequent home testing please complete this consent form by 2pm Monday 4th January 2022 by clicking this link https://forms.office.com/r/HD8bm24h31 As a reminder, up to one third of people who have coronavirus experience no symptoms. By testing we will help to stop the virus spread and help to keep the Academy open as safely as possible. The test is voluntary, but we would encourage everyone to take it. All students will have access to test kits for home testing before we finish for Christmas. One test should be kept for use prior to students returning after Christmas. Ideally, we would ask that students stick with the same testing schedule and that they take their tests on a Sunday and a Wednesday each week. Test kits can also be ordered for family members https://www.gov.uk/order- coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests or by calling 119. CASTLEHALLACADEMY @CASTLE_HALL CASTLE_HALL1 CASTLEHALL.COM Page 29
