Background • Started through United Way of Central Indiana • Expanded it through IN Association of United Ways to counties served by IU-Health from 2011 - 2014 • 8 counties in 2011 to 22 counties in 2014 All – supported by local cash and in-kind • See KCD report from 2014 Red = supported by IU Health Purple – supported by IU Health and IaUW Blue = supported by IaUW grants * Note that private, non-IUH funds supported vast expansion of 2013-2014 camps 5
Camp Design • 4 weeks, half-days, in a school • Qualified teacher (and often assistant) • IU-Health volunteers each day • approved curriculum • Pre- and post-test on pre- literacy skills (Get Ready to Read from Pearson) 6
Camp Design Options • During Summer School • Transportation – school bus, city bus • Meals • Backpacks and materials for parents • Supply drive for students • Field trips (though costs not paid by IUH) 7
2014 KCD Camp Outcomes Camps in targeted areas by IU Health experienced an average increase of 21% in Get Ready To Read pre-literacy skills, as illustrated in the graph below. 2/17/2015 8
Other features and outcomes • Awareness of kindergarten readiness in community • Action-based learning and student portfolios • Volunteer and parental engagement • Partnerships – Leveraged additional funding – Strengthened relationships • School readiness increased in… – pre-literacy – social and behavioral skills 2/17/2015 9
What is different for 2015 • More intensive focus by IUH on fewer camps (esp. in Delaware, LaPorte, Lawrence, Orange, Tippecanoe) • T-Shirts and Backpacks ONLY for IUH campers – with sizes and numbers collected by early May • Barnes and Noble relationship for book drives • Additional information and metrics in local camps • Determine if I-STAR KR is used locally • Budgets, action-based learning, attendance, demographic data • Ensure IUH is recognized 2/17/2015 11
IU Health Provides… • $90,000 financial contribution to support Kindergarten Countdown camps • Kindergarten Countdown backpacks and t-shirts for up to 450 students – NOTE ONLY for camp participants in IUH camps • IU Health Strength That Cares volunteers • Staff support to organize book drives and volunteer recruitment 2/17/2015 12
Understanding Your Role… Local IU Health Role: • Provide input for the location of Kindergarten Countdown Camp • Participate in B&N book drive where available ( to provide a daily book for each camper) • Recruit employees to volunteer in Kindergarten Countdown in your community • Promote awareness of Kindergarten Countdown at IU Health and in the community • Look for additional ways to provide in-kind support • Support the local United Way campaign 2/17/2015 13
