NEW HORIZONS MOVING INTO THE FUTURE On Monday, August 23, the parish held the first of three parish Listening Sessions. The Listening Session was very well attended. There are two more Listening Sessions which are planned. They will be on Tuesday, August 31 at 6 pm and on Thursday, Sep- tember 9 at 9:15 am. This article focuses on the upcoming planning process. Parish planning is especially significant for our parish as we move through the pandemic. Out of the planning process committees will be formed which will allow the parish to write a new Three Year Plan. I am hoping that this process will both bring the par- ish together and help the parish to grow. In general parish planning has the purpose of helping parishioners feel a sense of owner- ship in their parish which will lead to greater commitment. I hope that participation in this process will help you become mean- ingfully involved in parish ministry. As we begin this process I first would like to thank all of those who have been involved in parish ministry for so many years. As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the parish I am very aware that the members of St. Mary of the Pines Church parishioners have lived out the faith for decades and I thank those who have been actively involved in that ministry. I have a sense that it is time to begin a new planning process. It is time to truly reflect on how God is calling us to change and grow as a church community. Much is going well but there is room for growth and new involvement. The planning process will begin with Listening Sessions which will allow parishioners to list the dreams that they have for the various areas of ministry. I invite all parishioners to participate in these Listening Sessions. Afterwards, our Pastoral Council will form committees which will come together to write a new Three Year Plan for our parish. The committees that are formed will be called upon to assist in implementing the goals that are decided upon. The Parish Pastoral Council will use the Three Year Plan as it plans for the future of our parish. The process at the listening sessions will be very straightforward. Individuals will be given sheets on which they can list their dreams for 1. Outreach, 2. Liturgical Ministry, 3. Youth Ministry, 4. Religious Education for Youth, 5. Social Ministry, 6. Adult Faith Formation and 7. Other Dreams. In thinking about this process I ask that you reflect on the following verse: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they fol- low me (John 10:27).” This verse can help us better understand the upcoming parish planning process. This process will offer parish leadership the chance to hear Christ’s voice through all of the members of the parish. In order that the dreams that we ex- press might not only represent our views but that of Jesus our Good Shepherd I ask that you pray for the process. How will we be able to hear the voice of Jesus the Good Shepherd concerning our parish if we do not spend time in prayer? We must listen to God with open hearts. I ask that you lift up the success of all aspects of the planning process in your private and family prayer as we prepare for the upcoming listening sessions. This planning process is not merely a time in which we present personal projects and goals that we would like to see accomplished but instead it is about discerning or figuring out God’s will for the parish. Thus the planning process is about answering one basic question: “In what direction does God wish our parish to move?” Our overall goal is to compose and implement a plan which will help us move in the direction that God desires. Truly, the parish planning process is about listening to the voice of Jesus our Good Shepherd. It is the role of the Parish Pastoral Council to develop goals which can help the parish move in that direction. Before we begin this process, I ask that you reflect on the gifts that God has given you and how you can use those gifts for the upbuilding of St. Mary of the Pines. I invite you to reflect not only on what new ministries are needed for our parish but how can you be involved in their implementation. I hope the planning process will reestablish active committees that will work with me in strengthening our parish. I look forward to turning to you for assistance. I hope this process helps to instill in all parishioners a sense of shared responsibility for the life of our parish. In advance, I thank for your assistance in making the listening ses- sions and other aspects of this process a success.
