WHILE WE’RE AT IT… May 7, 2017
Dear Friends,
It’s beautiful to see our kids receiving their sacraments, as 15 second graders did at Sacred Heart last
week, and 70 more at St. Lawrence yesterday. The next two weeks will also feature nearly 100 Confirmations
at three different Masses. We had a powerful retreat experience for our Confirmation kids, bringing in the
group we had a year ago, “Hard As Nails”. All the kids loved it and said it made a huge impact on them and
we’ve had a number of very beautiful testimonies and thank you’s from our Confirmation kids.
Among those receiving the sacraments are several kids from families who are returning to the Church
and have gone through a special program to learn the faith. Congratulations to all our kids and to their
families! We’re especially happy for those who have come home to the Church and are living their faith in a
new and deeper way.
I was doing a wedding the other day, and had one of those experiences where something hits you as
totally new, even though you’ve done it hundreds of times already. For some reason it hit me that during the
exchange of vows, the bride and groom vow to “accept children lovingly from God and bring them up
according to the law of Christ and the Church”. In other words, they vow to pass on their faith to their kids.
What a serious commitment you make before God - right up there with “in good times and in bad, in sickness
and in health, till death do us part”.
Nurturing the faith of our next generations is a major task of the parish and a primary responsibility of
every Catholic parent. I want to thank you for the time and interest all you parents put into educating your
kids in the faith and bringing them to Mass each week. It is so encouraging to see that in a world that has
more than its share of confusion and conflict our Catholic parents are trying to steer our kids in the right
direction. We’re here to help.
Registration for our religious education program is on now, so get in touch with the religious education
office. If you’ve missed time, we’ll work with you to help get your children up to speed.
The rest of us need a renewal of faith from time to time, and our two parishes are part of a cluster of
six parishes hosting a special three evening regional Mission called “Revive” May 15-17 at St. Joseph’s Church
in Somers. There will be great music, great talks and testimonies, and a chance for some good prayer and a
spiritual uplift. It starts at 7:00 p.m. each night and we are organizing car pools to go. Further information is
available elsewhere in the bulletin and on the website.
