2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY: DANIELLE STANLEY Continued from Page 1 If you have ever thought about holding an officer position or becoming more involved in Chapter events, now is the time to reach out and ask questions. If the Executive Board is not your thing, we have numerous committees with vacancies for both Chair and Co-Chair positions, as well as volunteers for community service events. This brings me back to our theme for the year from Mother Teresa: “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” So take a moment to think how you can help create those ripples to impact our Chapter and community. 6 HONOR A VETERAN MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT BY: THE NATIONAL VETERANS MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM The National Veterans Memorial and Museum posted a story about a Medal of Honor Recipient with the hashtag #MedalofHonorMonday. This story is from Monday, April 26. On March 4, 2002, Master Sergeant John Chapman, US Air Force, distinguished extraordinary heroism as an Air Force Special Tactics Combat Controller, attached to the Navy SEAL Team conducting reconnaissance operations in Takur Ghar, Afghanistan. During insertion, the team’s helicopter was U PDAT E ambushed, causing a teammate to fall into an entrenched group of enemy combatants below. Chapman and the team voluntarily reinserted into the snow-capped mountain, into the heart of a known enemy stronghold to secure one of their own. Without regard for his own safety, he immediately engaged, moving in the direction of the closest enemy position despite coming under heavy fire from multiple directions. Chapman fearlessly charged an enemy bunker, up a steep include in thigh-deep snow and into hostile fire, directly engaging the enemy. Upon reaching the bunker, he cleared the position, killing all enemy occupants. He moved from cover only 12 meters from the enemy, and exposed himself once again to attack a second bunker, from which an emplaced machine gun was firing on his team. During this assault from an exposed position, Chapman was injured by enemy fire. Despite severe, mortal wounds, he continued to fight relentlessly, sustaining a violent engagement with multiple enemy personnel before making the ultimate sacrifice. THE Chapman was the first Air Force Combat Controller to be subsequently upgraded to the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. This story is being shared as a reminder that May is arriving, and this is when we honor our fallen heroes. Memorial Day is the time for honoring and mourning the military personnel who have died in the performance of military duties. They serve in the US Armed Forces selflessly and dedicate their lives to the American people. Memorial Day was declared a Federal Holiday by an act of Congress in 1971. It is also known as Decoration Day. Memorial Day 2021 is on Monday, May 31. ISSUE: 31:10 APRIL 2021 https://engage.asmconline.org/asmcbuckeyechapter/home
CHAPTER NEWS 7 GET RICHER WHILE YOU MULTITASK: 10 MUST-LISTEN PERSONAL FINANCE AUDIOBOOKS BY: GABRIELLE OLYA SOURCE: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/richer-while-multitask-10-must-110054129.html Continued from Page 3 • The Psychology of Money – Author Morgan Housel notes that most personal finance decisions are made based on your views about money rather than actually sitting down to crunch the numbers, so he’s aiming to change the way people think about their finances. Housel shares stories about how people think about money and how to make better sense of it for yourself. • The Intelligent Investor – Originally published in 1949, Benjamin Graham’s book remains one of the bestselling personal finance books (and now audiobooks). In it, Graham elaborates on his THE philosophy of “value investing” – a strategy for investors to avoid errors and focus on long-term goals. If you’re new to investing, listening to this audiobook is a good place to start. • Outliers – What differentiates super high achievers from the rest of us? This is the question Malcom Gladwell attempts to answer. If you want to become a high achiever – or find out why you aren’t one – this is an entertaining and informative listen. • Soundtracks – Overthinking steals our productivity, which can be costly for both individuals and the companies they work for. In “Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking,” U PDAT E Jon Acuff outlines a plan to get in control of your thoughts so that they stop controlling you. USO CANTEEN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY BY: TERRI HILTON We have more USO Canteens occurring on May 1-2 and May 7- 10, and out-processing May 15-16 and June 12-13.
