The Goldwing Way - Newsletter Editor Notes gheidt1@shaw.ca H: 403-343-0885 C: 403-872-0885 Hello everybody! It wasn't the Academy Awards but our chapter award night was definitely something to remember! We not only acknowledged our riders that placed tops in our award categories, we also paid tribute to our members for long term memberships and responsibilities - indeed worth a celebration. Thank you to our chapter ride coordinator/assistant director Terry Heidt for collecting and presenting the stats. Our chapter is in its 35th year and going strong. Also thank you to our treasurer Rob Christensen who summarized and named off all of the 50/50 winners over the past two years as well as the amounts given to our chapter. This is where we make our money - well done chapter AB-C! This month's Member Spotlight is with Fred Grono, thank you for sharing your history of motorcycling Fred. Watch for next month's newsletter when the spotlight will shine on Terry Johnson. Our annual bowling extravaganza was "un-BOWL-ievable". As always, we had a great time and I might add we have some mighty fine bowlers. We are now aptly named the "Bowling Stones" with time to "Spare". Thank you to our organizers Bill & Connie Durie, they sure "Gutt-er-done! Great job with the arrangements, you are certain to get a chuckle out of Bills write up - so FUNNY!! Miles of Smiles Glenda Did Someone say Ice Cream!! Set your devices to remind you of the Wednesday evening ice cream rides, officially commenced as of Wednesday May 1st. No pre-destination determined, we just "wing it", eat ice cream and enjoy the simple pleasure of a bike ride. We meet in the Costco parking lot near the gas pumps - the ride leaves by 6:30. This departure time will be consistent through to October so it's easy to remember! Wing Word 2
Directors Message - Wayne Renfert Come Along "For the Ride" Our scheduled chapter riding season is here! Check our web site often for the ride schedule list and new information as it is updated frequently. Our regular season began May 5th with destination rides every Sunday morning following breakfast at A&W. Riders group at 9:45 and the ride will leave by 10:00. We ride in groups of about five in a staggered formation as per GWRRA riding guidelines led by a road captain who communicates with a tail gunner. If you ride at a slower pace or are only riding a partial route just let the captains know - all riders welcome, we are a non-judgemental group. Often, the riders on Trikes or Spyders will make up a group. Expect a great ride, camaraderie, some scenic stops and perhaps a lunch or refreshment break depending on the day. Wing Word 3
I purchased my first motorcycle in 1970. A 1966 Kawasaki F1 175 and I still have it. I have threatened to sell it over the years but my kids said no way, you can’t sell that! They all learnt to ride it. It even came with electric start. I few years ago, I decided to refurbish it and found out that it had a Suzuki triple tree on it. Not sure how that happened but decided that wouldn’t do so I found the proper one on eBay. There was only a plastic front fender on it when I purchased so I found the proper one on eBay as well. Turns out they were stainless steel. The bike has a 4 speed rotary transmission, so four down and then you can go to neutral again. No need to down shift to find neutral. Since it was fairly new when I bought it with about 2000 miles on, I am sure it has the original tires on it as I have never changed them. I have had other bikes over the years. Somewhere along the line I graduated to a Honda CB 350 for a while. Loved the sound that came out of the pipes! Rode a Triumph Bonneville 650 for a while as well. Seem to recall it leaked more oil than anything else. That’s me on the Triumph with the F1 behind me. Then in 1980 I purchased a brand new Honda CM400T. Sweet bike! Rode it for several years before I sold it. Seems there were more kids in the picture so biking took a back seat for a while, but always had the old Kawasaki when the urge to ride came up. Wing Word 4
Seems there was always room on the old Kawasaki for one more! It wasn’t until 2008 when I purchased my 1986 Goldwing 1200i. While I was still a youngster, I had friends that had Goldwing's and I always wanted one. It’s an American bike originating out of Nebraska. I am the third owner. With around 100k kms on it, it should be good for a while yet. It has taken me through Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and northern California as well as the western Canadian provinces. I do dream of riding an 1800 though. Perhaps one day. Newsletter Info Thank you everyone for your great articles, keep'em coming - without them your newsletter would not happen! I would love some feedback on the chapter newsletter, what do you like, what don't you like, what could be changed or added to make it better? I will do my best to streamline the newsletter to your responses. Pop me an email at gheidt1@shaw.ca or call or send a text to 403-872-0885, even if just to say hello. Cheers! Glenda Wing Word 5
Million Miles of Memories - Glenn Turple July 8th 2018 was the day of our chapter annual bug run. July 22nd was the annual ride for sight fundraiser. We rode to Bragg Creek where it started. The ride was to Okotoks and west to Turner Valley looping back to the start. July 28th was my 90th birthday and we rode to Ponoka for the annual vintage rally. At the evening dinner there was a birthday cake for me, the start of four days of birthday cakes and celebrations. August started out with the annual vintage bike rally at Biggar SK followed by a Charlton side of a family reunion at Golden BC. Also in August was the ride to the Wetaskiwin Museum promoted by Honda Canada. September started Sunday afternoon on a labour day weekend, riding up to St Paul and down to Vermilion for the night. On Monday I rode to Consort for lunch on my way home. It rained lots that day. My big ride of the year was to see the Motorcycle Museums (in October) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Sturgis, South Dakota on a 15 day holiday riding 6005 kilometers. Riding the bike all summer it turned out that I never drove my car once over a period of five months. During the season I rode on several of our chapter Wednesday evening rides. The last two rides I went on no one else turned up as the weather in September was not very nice (or should I say lousy). From July 1st to Dec 31st 2018 I clocked 21,524 km. Total for the year 2018 was 35,005 km. Wing Word 6
NO HOLDS BARRED BOWLING! - by Bill Durie Saturday, the 4th day of the 5th month on a quiet street located in the heart of the megatropolis, "INNISFAIL" the annual bowling classic was about to begin. The participants collected around the lanes at or near 4 pm. The rythmatic chants from the hordes of spectators was growing in the background. (btw, where were those pom pom girls)? The teams were carefully put together to balance the talent. Rules were explicitly explained. NO BODY CONTACT!!! was emphasized. Everyone booed that decision, so body contact was allowed, but discreetly. And so it began. The bang of the balls hitting the hardwood, the clatter of the pins carelessly flying about, moans of disappointment and cheers of jubilation were heard as far away as the front door. A strike here, headpin over there, (Terry Heidt's favorite) and Robin with corner pin after corner pin. One hour and 16 grueling minutes later it was done. Combatants were sprawled about, exhausted from their labours while the powers to be determined the outcome. After careful considerations of who greased the palms the most, winners were selected in each of 4 categories and carefully secreted away in a sealed envelope to be revealed at the banquet. Wing Word 7
The banquet was held at the Great Wall of Innisfail????. Hm - You know, the place we ate at last year. The food was enjoyed by most everyone and there was lots of it. After the last tidbit was consumed and the tables tidied up, the winners were revealed. Prizes were awarded and then enjoyed by all. As we can see by the game totals of all competitors displayed below, the competition was fierce and intense. Only one point separated the ladies high game and only four point's separated the men. The only disappointment of the day, those that failed to attend. Let's strive to do better next year. "BACK WHEN" Chapter AB-C reached 35th Anniversary in 2019 Brian Brown (chapter historian) dug through the chapter archives and found the very first newsletter dated May 1984. In the newsletter it states the first AB-C chapter ride was held on April 8th 1984 making this the 35th anniversary of our chapter. Prior to formation of our chapter, two of our long term members Brian & Glenn remember riding to Calgary to attend GWRRA gatherings. Some things never seem to change, even in the first edition the newsletter editor was asking for members to submit articles and items of interest. Makes you think back to a time when there was no email. Below is an excerpt of the first "printed only on paper" newsletter. Wing Word 11
CAT TALES! Teacher: "If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven." Teacher: "No, listen carefully... If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven." Teacher: "Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Six." Teacher: "Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven!" Teacher: "Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?" Johnny: "Because I've already got a cat!" Wing Word 12
Prairies District Directors Report Hello to all Prairies District members, May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and as we begin our riding season, let’s remind everyone to be alert and to share the road with motorcyclists. Extra caution should be taken as we get out on the roads as both motorcyclists and motorist need to be aware of their surroundings. Never underestimate the other vehicle as they may be looking at you but they don’t really see you. Wear high-visible protective gear, check blind spots, mirrors and use hand signals as well as turn signals whenever changing lanes and when passing. A.T.G.A.T.T. (All The Gear All The Time) Ride safe and enjoy the limited riding season that we have. If you are attending Wing Ding 2019 in Nashville, think about staying at The Gaylord Opryland Resort where Wing Ding is being hosted. This resort has 4.5 acres of atrium gardens, river ways and waterfalls to explore. There are over 15 restaurants and lounges to enjoy during your stay and GWRRA has blocked rooms that give you a ridiculous discount to stay at this stunning resort. The Prairies District 2019 Rally itinerary is out, and everything is starting to come together. If you haven’t already, please register if you are attending. The success of this event depends on its participants and we look forward to seeing all our District members. This is a good time to rekindle old acquaintances and build new friendships. You can find the information on the District Webpage at http://www.gwrra-prairies-district.ca/index.php/district-rally. . Check the District webpage www.gwrra-prairies-district.ca. regularly and send us some photos that you would like to see on the webpage as these pictures will be seen by all including future members. Until next month, Gary and Susan Premech Prairies District Directors PLEASE NOTE: Participants are responsible for their own accommodations For more rally information: please visit our website at http://www.gwrra-prairies-district.ca/ You can mail your registration with payment to: GWRRA-Chapter AB-A c/o Ron Syroishka, 63 Sun Valley Drive SE, Calgary, AB T2X 2B4 Wing Word 13
Ride Coordinator Report - Terry Heidt And so it begins… After breakfast on Apr 7th, three members on Goldwing's travelled to Bearberry on a blue sky day with low double digit temps. The first ice cream ride to Lacombe took place Apr 17th. This was a nice change from the weather in early April last year. If you are out for these early rides some of the road shoulders and intersections are going to have areas of loose gravel and sand . Watch for clean pavement to put your feet down when coming to a stop so your boot doesn’t slip out on sand and cause a tip over. Co-riders can be quite sensitive about falling over. Watch out for the four wheel vehicles in case they aren't watching for you. On April 21st four bikes led by Milt headed out on a sunny Sunday to Stettler for a hot beverage, then made a loop through Big Valley before heading home for a 250 km ride. On April 22nd the sun was out again as Dave led 5 bikes with 8 riders to Wayne then back into Drumheller for lunch. After a stop at the largest dinosaur we headed to Morrin to check out their sod house. A windy but nice 360 km ride with temps up to 22C. The May schedule started out too cold on the 5th for a blue sky ride, on the 10th & 11th we will hold the ARC course, the 12th is slated for a Mother's Day ride, a Sunday blue sky ride on the 19th, on the 25th Milt will conduct Road Captain training. The 26th will be an AB-C mystery ride followed by our Chapter Gathering on the 27th. Check the website for any schedule changes. After reviewing our Chapter Rider Education Levels Program status it is apparent that action is required to get some member's into good standing again. The upcoming ARC should help somewhat with this situation. Some of our newer members have never been properly set up in Level I and Motorcycle Safety Awareness month is a good time to get this back on track. Without a Chapter Rider Educator the responsibility of maintaining this program now falls under the District Rider Educator and apparently the Chapter Ride Coordinator. The Levels Program is just another way to help keep us focused on safe operation and enjoyment of our motorcycles. Wing Word 14

Say it with a friend or family member. Most importantly find a way to make it meaningful for you! As a Motorcyclist I pledge to make safety a priority, to ride only when alert and fully prepared for the responsibility of motorcycling. I pledge to ride within my limits, ride sober, obey traffic laws and make arriving alive my greatest priority. As a Passenger I pledge to ride only with riders who place my safety first, who provide me with the proper riding gear, and who always ride sober. As a Motorist I pledge to treat motorcyclists with respect by always looking twice, using turn signals, checking my blind spots before switching lanes and eliminating distractions while driving. I pledge to act as if a loved one is riding on each and every motorcycle I see. I promise to drive like their life depends on me, because ultimately, it may. As a Friend and Family Member I pledge to support my loved one’s enjoyment and pursuit of motorcycling. I pledge to encourage them to seek certified riding instruction, to wear the proper protective gear and to be a safe rider. The GWRRA Rider Education Program has four levels: Level I - "Safety By Commitment" You may sign up for the Rider Education Program's Level 1 at any time. THEY'RE JUST TIRES - RIGHT? Submitted by Terry Heidt You might be surprised at the total weight carried by your tires when the motorcycle, fluids, rider, co-rider, riding gear, luggage, chrome & accessories are all added together. If you tow a trailer don’t forget to add in trailer tongue weight too. Also keep in mind more load may be distributed over the rear tire than the front. Overloaded and/or underinflated tires run hotter, wear faster and are more prone to failure. Below is some tire load capacity information taken from the Dunlop website for tires sized to fit the 2001-2017 GL1800 motorcycle. If you have a different model check your tire sidewall for maximum pressure and load rating. Also check your motorcycle GVWR gross vehicle weight rating. REAR TIRES The 2001-2017 GL1800’s came with Dunlop D250 tires which have a max load capacity of 827 lbs @ 41 psi. A replacement Dunlop Elite4 tire is rated at 992 lbs @ 42 psi - an increase of 165 lbs over the D250 tire. The Dunlop Elite4 180/60R-16 load capacity drops from 992 to 945 lbs @ 40 psi (or 48 lbs less when 2 psi underinflated) and drops to 898 lbs @ 38 psi (or 96 lbs less when 4 psi underinflated). The Dunlop D250 180/60R-16 load capacity drops from 827 to 787 lbs @ 39 psi (or 40 lbs less when 2 psi underinflated) and drops to 747 lbs @ 37 psi (or 80 lbs less when 4 psi underinflated) FRONT TIRES The replacement Dunlop Elite4 130/70R-18 tire has a max load capacity of 600 lbs @ 41 psi The stock Dunlop D250 130/70R-18 tire also has a max load capacity of 600 lbs @ 41 psi Running either of these front tires 2 psi low results in 30 lbs less load carrying capacity - and 60 lbs less load capacity if underinflated by 4 psi. Amazingly a set of D250 tires underinflated by just 2 psi could have 235 lbs less total load capacity than a set of properly inflated Elite4’s (1357 lbs vs 1592 lbs) and over 300 lbs less if the D250's were underinflated by 4 psi. When selecting replacement tires be sure to check the manufacturers load capacity to see if it meets your requirements. Check your tire pressure regularly. (Always check pressure on cold tires before riding) When buying a new tire check the four digit manufacture date stamped on the tire - the 1st two digits indicate week, the last two digits indicate year. If in doubt contact your dealer. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PNEUMATIC TIRE -Charles Goodyear received a patent for vulcanizing rubber in 1844, a process which mixed sulphur in with heated rubber. The vulcanization process turned soft sticky rubber into a firm pliable material suitable for making tires. -John B Dunlop developed and patented the pneumatic tire (containing air) for bicycles in 1887 after his son complained of the harsh ride from solid bicycle tires. His patent was later revoked when it was found an earlier patent had already been granted in 1847 for development of the pneumatic automobile tire. -Putting air in the tire allowed more weight to be carried while providing a softer ride without the heat buildup of solid tires. Roy Sirman - May 6th! Gordon Turple - May 28th! Musings from Milt! Not to brag but I just went into another room and actually remembered why I went in there. It was the bathroom , but still…. Remember when we had to smack the TV because the channel wasn't coming in clearly? I feel that way about far too many people. Some people won't admit their faults. I would if I had any. I'm at that delusional age where I think everyone my age looks way older than I do. Every refrigerator has a crisper drawer. Which is a great place to hide your vegetables while they rot. Common Sense - is like deodorant. The people who need it most never use it. Is anyone really confident with how they say "Worcestershire sauce". When I finish eating something I have to show my hands to the dog. Like I'm a blackjack dealer… The older you get the more you appreciate cancelled plans, early nights, thunderstorms and alcohol that is on sale. My kids will never know the joy of finding a quarter in the payphone coin return. Wing Word 19
