September 5, 2021 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK On this Labor Day weekend, we celebrate the contributions of workers who make up the strength, prosperity and well being of our Nation. Human labor is honorable. Jesus, Himself, worked as a carpenter with Saint Joseph. When our efforts at work are offered to God, they become sacred. These minor and major tasks also connect us with the human spirit in cooperating with one another to make life better for everyone, especially the weakest among us, those who are marginalized. That is the point of today’s readings. The prophet, Isaiah, has a vision of the day coming when the blind will see and the deaf will hear. And this was fulfilled in Jesus who demonstrates mastery over the limits of human misery: “He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put His finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then looked up to heaven and said “Be Opened!” And immediately the man’s ears were opened and his speech impediment was removed (Mark 7:31-37). There is a great deal of noise in our lives: the irritating fax machine connection on a phone, the disturbing sounds of telemarketer calls and texts, loud sirens and maximized volume of car radios. These noises often deafen us in our surroundings. On this Labor Day weekend, we recall the employees who labored in noisy, throbbing atmospheres like the steel mills, coal mines and fabrication plants. Locally, many people were burdened with this heavy labor in the loud automobile assembly plants and leather factories…and lost the ability to hear. With so much noise, the same thing can happen to us. We can become deaf to God speaking to us quietly in our hearts. Equally tragic is the fact that we preferentially hear only what we want to hear and turn a deaf ear to the pleas of those around us who are in some need; very often in our own household, next door, at our places of business or among friends. During baptism the priest or deacon touches the ears and mouth of the one who is baptized saying: “The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the mute speak. May He soon touch your ears to receive His word and your mouth to proclaim His faith.” Today is a good day to truly listen and allow the Lord to “open” our minds and hearts to the Lord Himself and the crying world around us. Labor Day is Monday, September 6th. The one Mass, that day, will be at 9 a.m. We thank God for those who have employment and ask the Lord to assist those seeking employment. Happy Labor Day! Our Parish School started this past week ….we wish our principal, staff and students good luck this coming academic year and may God Bless their every endeavor! Flowers at the altar are in memory of Frank Delikat.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), is the process through which an individual is brought into full communion in the Catholic faith. What does that mean? To whom does it apply? First, to be in full communion with the Church means you have received the sacraments of initiation; Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and are trying to live a faithful Catholic Christian life. Secondly, to whom does it apply? • Anyone who has not been baptized • Someone who has received only baptism, but no other sacraments • Non-Catholics who feel drawn to the Catholic faith • Those outside the Church with no faith connection or religious affiliation Do you see yourself in any of these situations? Do you know someone who might; a friend, a spouse, a neighbor? If your answer is yes, then the following invitation is one you should not let pass you by. The invitation is to participate in the RCIA process here at St. John’s which begins on Monday September 13 at 7:00PM. You will not be disappointed. As Jesus said to the first disciples, “come and see for yourself” (Jn 1:39). To participate call the Parish office, 302-999-0211. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Choosing Deafness — If you’re a parent, you know that hearing evaluations are usually done at a child’s annual physical exam starting around age four. The little person gets hoisted up onto the exam table, fitted with a pair of special headphones, and then they need raise their hand when they hear a sound. I bet all of us parents who have sat through one of these tests with a preschooler — especially a particularly strong-willed one — have experienced a moment where we ask ourselves: I wonder if there’s something wrong with her hearing. Is that why she doesn’t listen to me? ‘Come here, put on your shoes, pick up your toys, finish your carrots, don’t touch that’ — she isn’t being naughty, she just can’t hear it! And then that moment, for those of us whose kids passed the hearing test with flying colors, comes crashing down into a realization that, yep, they can hear just find. They’re just choosing deafness. But how can we really get mad when we remember that we do the same thing to God day in and day out? I often wonder if God, sitting in His Heaven, tires of calling to us in the same way young parents tire of calling out unheeded directions to their small children. Help that person. Hear My voice. Open your heart. Give of yourself here. Talk to Me. What is the call He wishes you to hear today? Can you hear it? Are you listening? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Connect with SJBDE online on Facebook for daily Shares.

Sometimes, it really hurts to be a human being. We face brokenness of all kinds: physical, emotional, and spiritual. For no apparent reason, life can quickly fall apart. What we knew to be familiar is gone and something we relied upon is taken away. We are left sitting with our incompleteness and swimming in the pools of our sadness. Be strong! Fear not! These admonitions flow from the mouths of prophets and are echoed by Jesus. It is difficult to trust that restoration, healing, and rejuvenation will one day come, and remain steadfast in our faith. But we are here because of a God who loves us, not as the result of a random occurrence. When we reach for that truth about who we are and who God is, life changes for us. We are healed from our old distorted way of seeing things. Our eyes, heart, and soul are opened to the beauty and magnificence of life. The pulse of our loving Creator is felt in all things and we can’t wait for God to come and touch us again. God made us, God loves us, and God keeps us. He has done all things well. ©LPi For inspirational updates Connect with SJBDE at Instagram, & Twitter.
