WPL MATTERS F E B RUA RY 2 0 1 8 T HE HISTORY BE HI ND VAL E NT I NE ’S DAY... The origins of Valentine’s Day are murky at best. The Catholic Saint Valentine has an unknown—or unproven—history, but he is still recognized as a saint. It is easier to trace the history of valentines and Valentine’s Day in America. Although some people are reported to have exchanged verbal valentine wishes, written valentines didn’t appear until the 15th century, and exchanging valentines has been an English tradition since then. It is believed that the tradition of sending valentines came to America with English settlers, and that Americans began exchanging handmade valentine cards in the early 1700s. However, the first American, mass-produced valentine wasn’t sold until the 1840s by Esther A. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine. Howland made her valentines with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures. Trivia/Facts: In 2017, an estimated $18.2 billion was spent in the U.S. for Valentine’s Day, including $4.3 billion on jewelry, $2 billion on flowers, $1.7 billion on candy, and $1 billion on cards. The estimated number of roses produced for Valentine’s Day in 2013: 224 million. The first heart-shaped Valentine’s Day box of chocolates was introduced by Richard Cadbury in 1861.Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, Australia, Denmark, Italy, and Japan. When it comes to candy sales, Valentine’s Day ranks fourth in the U.S. behind Halloween, Easter, and Christmas. More than 40 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate were sold for Valentine’s Day in 2014. Caramel-filled chocolates are most popular followed by chocolate-covered nuts. 69% of Americans prefer getting chocolates over flowers on Valentine’s Day. The New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) made the first conversation hearts in 1866, and today produces about 100,000 pounds (or eight billion hearts) of Sweethearts each year. 1

WPL Children's Language Program FEBRUARY 1 - 28, 2018 Westchester Public Library now offers patrons access to Muzzy, a language learning program for children. We are promoting this new learning tool during the entire month of February with a Winter Language Program for kids age 3 - 11. Register your youngster today by calling or visiting the Thomas Branch or Hageman Branch. Through repetition and reinforcement, the program showcases the power of immersion. Children delight in the adventures of Muzzy and his friends as they watch expertly scripted videos; various activities help to reinforce learning as children are exposed to a wide range of vocabulary, from greetings and the verb “to be” to numbers and fruits and vegetables. As children progress through the sequence - and answer questions tailored to each level - they receive a punch on a personal MUZZY BBC reward card. After receiving ten punches, they will receive a personalized MUZZY BBC certificate and giveaway. At the end of the program, children can enter their cards into a grand prize drawing for a chance to receive a special MUZZY BBC backpack, filled with bookmarks, puppets, buttons and more to celebrate their achievement. F r o m t h e M u s e u m C u r at o r ’ s D e s k On February 13, 1903, Chesterton dedicated its new, brick town hall on Calumet Rd. (then called the Valparaiso- Michigan City Rd.). Almost one year before the town hall was dedicated, a huge fire swept down the east side of Calumet Rd. and destroyed eleven buildings. Distressed by the extensive damage and the larger disaster that was narrowly missed, the town created a few new mandates regarding downtown buildings and water access. The town prohibited the use of wood in all new downtown building construction, required fireproof roofs, and drilled a system of wells around town for an emergency water supply. The town also ordered that a volunteer fire department be organized and a town hall built. Westchester Township’s first fire department was housed in the new town hall building. Forty men volunteered immediately to serve on that all-volunteer department. The new town hall, built by Joseph Ameling, general contractor, served various purposes. The basement held a jail in the back and a storage space in the front. The entire ground floor was used exclusively for the fire engine, which at that time was pulled by horses. Those horses were specially trained to walk backwards through the main doors and hooked up to the fire wagon. The second floor had two rooms, one for the town board and fire department to use as a meeting room, and the other to be used as a court room and a space for public meetings. The dedication ceremony included music by the Mandolin club, solos by two Chesterton women, and a speech by Harry Darling, editor of the LaPorte Argus Bulletin. After the ceremony, the fire department held a dance in Moroney’s hall and raised $38 to buy rubber coats and other supplies. The Chesterton Tribune reported that there were so many people in attendance that there was not much space to actually dance at the beginning of the night. Nine Valparaiso firemen attended as guests of the Chesterton Fire Department and spoke highly of the equipment that the Chesterton department acquired. The Valparaiso men donated $5 to the Chesterton company. The fire and police departments relocated to Broadway and 8th St. in 1960. The old town hall has changed hands many times since then but currently houses the Coffee Creek Art Studios. 24
