1500-1600 Atopic innovations and ethnic diversity Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects diverse ethnic groups with varying prevalence. According to a Canadian census, more than 7.5 million people belong to a visible minority such as South Asian, Chinese or black, and the number is steadily growing. Yet many doctors appear unaware that visible minorities are at much higher risk than Caucasians of some skin conditions, ranging from relatively harmless dark spots to more serious problems, like late-stage melanoma. This session will focus on the unique clinical features of AD in diverse ethnic groups, targeted treatments and responses to current therapies, specific considerations when moisture barriers are compromised, as well as prevention strategies. A thorough understanding of atopic dermatitis across a broad range of racial and ethnic groups is critical as we care for an increasingly multinational patient population. Current management of moderate-to-severe AD in children is challenging, as effective systemic therapies with a favourable safety profile for long-term use are not available. This session will focus on the underlying inflammation of AD and practical approaches in clinical management of this chronic disease in children. Primary prevention is developed in adulthood and rapidly evolving in paediatrics. Evidence suggests that atherosclerosis begins in childhood and is associated with modifiable risk factors, such as obesity. Moreover, inherited disorders of lipid metabolism (familial hypercholesterolemia) are common (1:250) and often undiagnosed until a catastrophic event occurs in young adulthood. Therefore, primary prevention of CVD must start from childhood. The results of the recent CPSP survey on lipid screening in the paediatric population will also be discussed. 1230-1330 Children’s health after climate-related disasters: Implications for Canadian paediatricians This session will provide an overview of recent climate-related disasters in Canada and the immediate, moderate and long-term health impacts on children, including existing strategies to deal with the problem. Whole exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing: What every frontline clinician should know in 2021 Genome-wide sequencing tests, including whole exome sequencing and genome sequencing, are increasingly used in paediatrics to diagnose genetic conditions. Indications for testing, availability, and access are issues germane to frontline clinicians across Canada.
