November 21, 2021 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Who’s the Greatest? When I was a kid, my brother, Rob, who is a year older than I, could be something of a challenge, probably just as much as of a challenge as I could be to him. I remember that he went through a phase where he would stand in front of the mirror, flex his muscles and proclaim to anyone who would listen, “Who’s the greatest? I am the greatest.” Then he would walk around the house and make sure that everyone knew his opinion of himself. To be sure, there is nothing wrong with having a positive self-image, but my brother sometimes took his self-image to obnoxious extremes. Since he thought of himself as the “greatest,” you can imagine that he didn’t think that the rest of my brothers and sister were equal to his exalted status. His high opinion of himself and result- ing conduct led to no end of arguments and fights among us. Of course, the rest of us were not without blame, ei- ther. All of us wanted to be the “greatest,” thinking only of what we wanted and what others “owed” us because, of course, we were the “greatest.” So, we baited each other, and we weren’t very forgiving of one another. After all, if I am the “greatest,” I don’t need to ask for forgiveness or to forgive anyone because I am never wrong; everybody else is. Everything exists to serve me, and if something fails to serve me, I have no use for it. I can throw it away. This attitude of “me first” or “I am the greatest,” which governs our earliest behaviors as children and, alt- hough much modified, continues to strongly influence us as adults, explains a lot about our human predicament. It is an attitude rooted deeply in pride and fear. Pride keeps us from recognizing our true condition as imperfect hu- man beings, prone to error and sin, incapable of saving ourselves and needing God. Fear keeps us at a distance from and distrustful of others. After all, if I allow you to become greater than me, I will not get what I want and deserve. This is the attitude that drove Lucifer from heaven and Adam and Eve from paradise. It is the attitude re- sponsible for devastating wars and genocidal campaigns that have continued into our own time. It is the attitude that drives our throw-away culture, that objectifies the most intimate human relationships so that we treat one an- other as objects to satisfy our needs rather than as persons created in the image and likeness of God for mutual love, compassion, mercy, and community. It is the attitude responsible for the degradation of the environment and increasingly destructive climate change. It is the attitude that encourages us to dominate and enslave others, to de- stroy life at its most vulnerable stages, whether in the womb or in the nursing home. It is the attitude that seeks re- venge and retribution over forgiveness and conversion. Amidst this messy and discouraging sinful reality, the Church offers us the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Instituted by Pope Pius XI in response to the carnage of World War I and the increas- ing secularization of modern society that was intent on substituting itself for God, of making itself “the greatest,” the Solemnity is meant to remind us that the only real solution to our dysfunctional individual and societal behav- iors is to recognize and acknowledge Jesus Christ as the one and only “greatest,” as the Lord and Savior of crea- tion. Jesus is the “greatest,” not in the way that my brothers, sister and I considered ourselves to be the “greatest,” thinking only of our own needs and concerns, out of pride and fear; and not in the way our modern society regards itself as the “greatest,” advocating a throw-away culture that ignores the sanctity of human life and relationships; but in an entirely different way. Jesus is the “greatest,” not because he seeks to satisfy his own needs at the expense of others, not out of a pride and fear that lead to the debasement and exploitation of others, but because he gives himself freely and entirely for our well-being and salvation. He goes to the cross so that we might be forgiven our sins, be embraced by the Father, and have life eternal. For this reason, Daniel says that Jesus, the Son of Man, has an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, and Revelation affirms that Jesus loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood. As the humble servant-King, Jesus makes his life about us, not about him. He is not afraid to have us share in his greatness, to make us priests for his God and Father. John reminds us that Jesus’ greatness, like his kingdom, does not belong to this world, a world whose capacity for love, forgiveness, compassion, mercy, and true greatness is stunted by sin, pride and fear, and by a mistaken understanding of what constitutes true “greatness.” Rather, Je- sus’ greatness proceeds from and testifies to the truth of the Father’s marvelous and unmerited love for us, a love that overcomes pride and fear; a love that both challenges and enables us to become truly great ourselves through Jesus’ life, cross, death and resurrection. This is the greatness that is built on humility and truth, on self-sacrifice and love of others. This is the greatness that brings reconciliation and healing, justice and peace, and beckons us to drink deeply of its life-giving joy. This is the greatness that acknowledges Jesus as our only Lord, as the one robed in majesty, as the true King of the Universe. Blessings, Fr. Chris 2

DID YOU KNOW? Use concrete visual rules to help children stay safe. Parents in a crowded place, like a playground or store, will often tell their children, “Stay where I can see you.” While the parent understands that this means, “Stay close,” a child does not necessarily understand the limit — when can a parent see or not see them? A clearer direction would be to tell your child, “Stay where you can see me.” This gives them the boundary — they must be able to see you no matter where they go. Now, your child can check in frequently, all while staying in eyesight. For more tips, request the VIRTUS® article “Communication Tip No. 5: Stranger Danger,” at THANKSGIVING DAY MASS & OFFICE CLOSURE DURING THANKSGIVING The Parish Offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday beginning at 2pm on Wednesday November 24 , and will reopen on Saturday November 27th at 9:00 AM. There will be a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated at 9am on Thursday 25th . Keeping with our Thanksgiving tradition, you may bring food to be blessed, either for yourself or for a donation to SAVES. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ANY FOOD YOU BRING IS STORE SEALED. The Friday evening mass at 5:30pm will be celebrated as usual on November 26th. Calling all social bu erflies, smiling and welcoming Catholics … We invite you to join our Hospitality Ministry at St. Augus ne’s! It’s easy! It’s fun! You’ll get to meet people and you’re here at Church already for Mass! And as we read in 1 Peter 4: 9-10: “Be hospitable to one another without complaining. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” If you would like to answer this bap smal call or get more informa on about the ministry, please contact Glenna or Amanda via email at hospitality@staugus neadla.org or call the parish office and leave a message - 310 838-2477.
