The time has nearly arrived...school is just
about ready to begin. As we have prepared for
the upcoming school year, I am reminded of
how alive a building is when children are in it
and how wonderful the sound of their
excitement and energy is throughout the
halls; we cannot wait for the students to
arrive!
Please know that we are looking forward to
another great year, and we continue to be
thankful for the relationship between school
and home as we work together in growing your

assistance with any questions you may have.

A Reminder about Transportation
Please review the procedures...
Second & Third Grade Students Arriving
and Going Home by Car:
The lane in the front of the school is an auto lane only
for drop-off. We ask that all parents enter heading
NORTH on Betscher Avenue. You may need to go up to
Second Street or Front Street, and turn onto Betscher Avenue. As you approach the school, please pull into the auto lane in a parallel parking position and wait until you are in the "Drop Off Zone" to have your child exit the car. Please have your child exit on the passenger side of the car: the sidewalk side instead of the street side. School employees will be out front to assist your child if needed. Be sure to avoid leaving space in the car lane. All cars should stay in the line and just keep moving forward. For student supervision purposes, 2nd & 3rd grade students who do not ride a bus are to enter school through the main doors reporting to the gym until 8:40. At 8:40, students will be dismissed to their classroom. After you drop off your child, please continue north on Betscher toward Crater Stadium and turn left at the Stadium. This avoids a "back up" at the 4-way stop on 4th Street. If you still choose to park on a side street and walk your child to the main door, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you walk with your child to the crossing guard. With buses using 4th Street more, this is critical for student safety. The student bike rack is on the front of the 3rd Street side of the school to avoid the bus traffic. The same procedures are for pick-up in the afternoon as well. However, if you choose to get out of your car to pick up your child, please park on one of the side streets and cross at the crosswalks with your child as you return to your car. ***Kindergarten, 1st, 4th, & 5th grade students in East School’s WALK ZONE also enter the school through the main doors reporting to the gym hallway for bus transportation to Dover Avenue or South Elementary School. Staff will be on duty to supervise bus students. At the end of the day, bus students from Dover Ave. or South Elementary will be dismissed to the front of the building. Students Riding a Bus: Buses line up in the back of the playground area instead of in front of the school. Buses enter from the 4th Street side and exit the 3rd Street side. In the morning, students getting off the bus enter the back doors of the school, and wait in the gym until 8:40. *After school, bus students will wait in the gym until their bus arrives to East School. *Students who are walking or are picked up will be dismissed to the front of the building.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND YOUR COOPERATION IN MAKING OUR DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP TIMES SAFE FOR ALL STUDENTS! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More information about morning and afternoon times... Please review safety procedures and expectations with your child in the Student Handbook so that we can make safety a top priority. Walkers are required to cross at designated crosswalks. They are responsible to go directly home after school. Students are not to enter the school prior to 8:30 each morning. Please make arrangements for students not to arrive earlier than 8:30. Teachers use this time before school for meetings and preparation for the day. All school entrances will be locked. Students and parents will need to ring the bell at the main doors to enter. Parents are asked to wait outside for their children to be dismissed at the end of the day. Students should sign in at the office when coming to the school after 8:55. Only students in grades 4 and 5 are permitted to ride their bikes to and from school. For your children's safety, rollerblades/skates, scooters, or skateboards are not permitted. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- East PTG Be a part of the group!
One of the biggest assets of our school is the PTG. Services such as volunteering time, helping with programs, and providing financial assistance for equipment and activities are vital functions of the PTG and greatly appreciated by our school community. The PTG annually spends nearly $10,000 on student incentives and building items for the betterment of the school. We encourage parent involvement with our school and PTG. Membership is only $1.00 and is a good return for your money. We are truly thankful for our tremendous PTG! The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 15 (6:00 PM) at South Elementary School in the library. This year's officers are: President: Robin Griesen Vice Presidents: Natalie Peterman Secretary: Angela Stingel Treasurer: Heidi Miller PTG meetings will rotate between elementary schools: • August 15, 2019 at South School • September 12, 2019 at Dover Ave. School • October 7, 2019 at East School • January 14, 2020 at South School • February 3, 2020 at Dover Ave. School • April 16, 2020 at East School • May 5, 2020 at South School Giving Trees Giving trees will be hanging outside classroom doors on "Meet the Teacher" night. Please take the apples and return with the requested items. Thank you for your generosity. *PTG will also have a membership table at "Meet the Teacher" where you can join for the year for $1. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fees Workbook fees due by Friday, Sept. 13 The following is a list of student costs for the upcoming school year: Grades 2-3 workbook fees: $25.00 All workbook fees should be paid by Friday, September 13. Please make checks payable to East School. *Separate Checks Needed: Due to the State of Ohio auditing procedures, we cannot accept lump-sum checks for several items on one check (i.e. workbooks, lunches, yearbooks, book
fair orders, etc.). They need to be separate for each item. However, you can pay for more than one child
per check for that specific item.
**All fees need to be paid or report cards and Progress Book access will be withheld.

However, you can pay for more than one child per check for that specific item. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Absences How to Report Your Child Absent In compliance with the Missing Child Act and for the safety of our children, parents are requested to call East School (364-7114) before 8:45am to report the reason for your child's absence. We encourage student attendance every day to ensure continuity of learning. However, if your child is absent, please send a note following the return of your child to verify his/her absence. If the absence is due to a medical, dental, or legal appointment, please provide a verification note on the provider’s stationary upon return to school. If no call or note is received, the absence(s) will be marked as unexcused.
Family vacations are an acknowledged part of a student's educational growth. We would hope parents
would make every effort to take their vacation during the summer; however, if the family plans a
vacation during regularly scheduled school time, the following will be expected:
For an excused absence from the office:
1. Parents should notify the office in writing two days in advance of the absence. Shorter
notice may be approved by the office, but make-up work must be obtained by the student upon
return.
2. A parent, grandparent, or guardian must accompany the student on the vacation.

Pets and Animals on School Property
With the exception of pre-approved special events (i.e “Star
Student,” show-and-tell, etc.), pets and/or other animals are not
permitted on school grounds. This includes all exterior areas
including sidewalks immediately surrounding the schools during
drop-off and pick-up times. This policy is for the safety of all, and
with respect to allergies and/or health issues of all students.

Medicine at School
What should I do if my child needs medicine at school?
In accordance with state and board policies, we are NOT permitted to dispense medication without
directions and signatures of both the Physician and the Parent. If it is essential that a child takes
medicine during the school day, medication forms are available on our district website or you may stop in
the office.

Communication is Key!
We hope that you find each and every one of us easily
accessible so as to foster and facilitate the all important
connection between school and home. Please don't hesitate to
call or e-mail with any questions or concerns as we work through
this school year. However, there are also other ways to stay up
to date on happenings as well as information pertinent to your
child.
1. NEWSLETTERS: Please be sure to check our district website for monthly East School
newsletters.
2. PHONE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM: In the event of any emergency or to share important
information, Dover City Schools has a phone notification system. The call will be made to the
primary phone number that was used to enroll your student. You may also use the online access to
add up to three additional numbers to be used in the case of an emergency call. An informational
call will be sent only to the primary number. This "hotline information" is posted on the school
website under the Parents link.
a. *If you change your phone number or eliminate any lines, please notify the school so we can
make any necessary changes.
3. PROGRESS BOOK: If your child is a new student, you will receive access information for your
student's Progress Book account. Families who have already accessed Progress Book previously
will continue to use their same login and password. Please access this as frequently as you are
able, as it is a great way for you to access your student's grades and progress on a regular basis.
If you are having any difficulty setting up your account or linking your students' accounts, please
don't hesitate to contact us.
4. FACEBOOK: Become a "fan" of Dover City Schools on Facebook...just another great way to keep
up on all the great things happening in Dover Schools!

A Special Note of Thanks
New Pointe Community Church members volunteer their time again this
year...
Thank you so much to the members of the New Pointe Community Church who
provided a work crew on Sunday, July 28. Working together to rejuvenate and
revitalize our building's exterior, they pulled weeds and mulched--it looks wonderful!
We truly appreciate their support and all the East School families and others from NPCC who worked
that morning and gave of their time!

Child Find
Dover City Schools receives IDEA-B funds for the purpose of the education of children with disabilities.
Annually, at the September Board of Education Meeting, discussion will be held regarding how the
District will spend its IDEA-B funds and time will be allowed for public comment.

Raptor Visitor Management System
Dover City Schools will be using the Raptor Visitor Management System in all of our schools to
strengthen school safety for students and faculty. Part of keeping students and faculty safe includes
knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and the Raptor system allows us to do that. The Raptor
system will better allow us to screen visitors, workers, and volunteers in our schools and provide us with
a safer environment for all.
Upon entering a district building, visitors will be asked to present a US government-issued ID such as a
Driver’s License, which can be scanned or manually entered into the system. If a parent or guardian does
not have a scannable ID, the school staff member can use any form of government identification that
includes a photo to manually enter the person’s information into the Raptor system.
The Raptor system checks the visitor's name and date of birth for comparison with a public state and
national databases of registered sex offenders. The registered sex offender database is the only
official database checked by the Raptor system. No other data from the ID is gathered or recorded and
the information is not shared with any outside agency.
Upon approval, Raptor will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her
visit. If anyone other than a parent or guardian is signing a child out from school, he or she may be asked
to present identification, as well. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who are not going past
the main office but are simply dropping off an item in the office or picking up paperwork.The safety of our students is our highest priority. The Raptor visitor management system allows us to
quickly identify those who may present a danger to our students. Thank you in advance for your
understanding and your support in enhancing school safety procedures in our district.
