St. Columban Church Page 3 Collection for last weekend was: Regular Sunday $27,268.00 On-line $3368.96 PSA 2021 Total Pledged: $200,121.00 Total Amount Paid: $147,719.00 Total Families: 484 We thank you for your participation ongoing support in providing for the ongoing operating needs of our parish during the stay pandemic. We’re honored you would bless us with your generosity. Donations like yours make a big difference in the work our church is doing in the community. Our weekly operating budget is $28,000.00. But we can’t pull this off without your support. Whether you give to the church on a regular basis, or just attend on occasion, we’re asking you to please use the envelopes - they help you remember and keep us on target or donate to the church electronically and help us save money on parish envelopes. To continue to financially support our parish please visit our website, click our "Giving" tab, or use one of the drop boxes located in the church and at the front door of the parish office. A Note to all Parishioners On behalf of the team who counts Collections for St. Columban Church, a blessed thank you for all who have contributed to the support of our Parish each week, particularly in this season of pandemic and the upheaval it has caused to our lives. We are so grateful for your continued generosity and want you to know how you can help us make the accountability of funds easier for our bookkeeper. Our first suggestion is that when you write a check, please make it out clearly to St. Columban Church. Then place your Parish Directory System number on the memo line. If you cannot remember this PDS number, please call the front office and they will look it up for you. Keep it in your checkbook for reference. If you use envelopes, look for this PDS number above your name. Our second suggestion regards loose money placed in the baskets. If you choose to fold your bills, please only fold them once. This helps in the straightening process and the bank is happier with us. We do take the time to list all donations from loose checks if we know your PDS number but, often these are not available to us if you are not registered in the parish. Our third suggestion, then, is to ask you to consider registering as soon as possible to properly credit your donations. Once again, thank you so much for your continued generosity. We are truly blessed each week with your gift of support.

St. Columban Church | www.saintcolumbanchurch.org Page 5 ST. VINCENT de PAUL is here to help our parishioners. We have served ST. COLUMBAN church for over 40 years. WE DISTRIBUTE FOOD ON A MONTHLY BASIS TO FAMILIES IN NEED. Please call our office at 714-539-9133 if you need help with food during these difficult times. St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank the wonderful parishioners of St. Columban Church who help feed our families in need. During this past Christmas season we provided food to 125 families. We were also able to give toys to 85 families with 256 children from ages one to thirteen. All of this happened because of your generous contributions to special collections that support our ministry, including donations given in the monthly envelopes. We are most grateful for your help! Over the past several months, the plight of those without housing as well as others in need have been heavy on the hearts of those of our fellow Parishioners who have participated in our Persons In Need (PIN) program and perhaps yourselves. After a good deal of discernment and prayer, and in collaboration with Bridget, we have determined that we would be able to provide a lunch to go on 2 Saturdays a month, of course consistent with Covid-19 practices. Our offering will include: A boxed or bagged lunch and a bottle of water A small hand sanitizer and masks Meals will be distributed between 11:30 and 12:00 in the driveway at the White House on the first and last Satur- days of every month. Our guests will be asked to respect social distancing, adhering to the markers we will be using We’ll have a table with the meals and our meal sponsor will be six feet on the other side of the table directing our guests to grab a lunch and water We’re going to ask them to go to a local park or return to where they stay to enjoy their meal as we don’t want to create issues with our neighbors If anyone has questions or would like to sponsor a Saturday meal, please contact me at sbrid@saintcolumbanschool.com God bless you all!

St. Columban Church Page 7 In a recent liturgy magazine I receive (yes, there really are liturgy magazines for liturgy and music nerds like me), I read an article that made me smile reminiscing about the past and at least feeling somewhat hopeful about the future. I contacted the author, Nick Wagner who is also the Editor of GIA Quarterly (a liturgical music journal) and asked him for permission to reprint. He graciously gave permission, so I hope you enjoy: Singing My Heart Out Nick Wagner, Editor In the early 1970s, I found myself singing in a teen choir in my parish. I don’t say “joined,” because I don’t remember signing up. The group of friends I hung out with would do things like go to a movie or the high school football game or out for pizza. And we would all just go out. No one signed up. Choir was the same way. We just started doing it. There was one girl in our group who could sing. The kind of singing that made us all stop and listen. The rest of my group could sing a little. They could match pitch, stay on the beat, come in on time. I could not sing at all. Still can’t. Whenever I say that, every single singer I know, including my wife, emphatically declares that everyone can sing! And I will admit that if the song is simple and I am surrounded by good singers and the rhythm is 4/4 or 3/4, I can blend in enough that I don’t embarrass myself. But if I had to sing that same song by myself, even alone in the shower, it would never happen. And that is exactly why I sing at Mass—or at least try to . For me, and maybe for a lot of people on Sunday, sing- ing is not something I can do by myself. I can only do it when I’m surrounded by other singers. For me, the spiritual power of singing is seldom in the text or in the tune. It is usually in the act of attempting to do it with others. And I haven’t done that—sung with others— since the pandemic started and attendance at Mass has been restricted. There are a lot of things I miss about not being able to participate in Mass, and not being able to sing with others is one of the most painful. But as important as the weekly Sunday Eucharist is to my faith, my faith isn't going away because I cannot be at Mass. It is by the way that we live (our Christian style) that we encounter the holy. If we are forced to live in semi-isolation, we still encounter the mystery of Christ in that isolation. The idea that God will sustain us no matter what, even during the pandemic-forced Eucharistic fast, is great comfort. But I still long for the day when we can gather again to celebrate the Eucharist. And on that day, I will join. I will join with my fellow parishioners and—on pitch or not, on beat or not—I will sing my heart out. And, a P.S. from me, Ro—I hope you do exactly that! Ro
