Liturgy Highlights Each month of the liturgical year is devoted to a particular Catholic tradition, usually centered on a Feast during that month. The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, whose memorial the Church celebrates on September 15. The name of Our Lady of Sorrows centers on the extraordinary and bittersweet suffering the Blessed Mother experienced during Christ’s Passion. During this month of September, we are drawn into the spiritual martyrdom that the Blessed Mother experienced during the physical martyrdom of Jesus. The evils of sin are manifest but conquered through intense suffering. The Blessed Mother’s tears of anguish reflect God’s washing away of sin. If you haven’t ever prayed the Seven Sorrows chaplet, you might want to consider exploring this devotion. ARE YOU CAUGHT UP IN CHRIST? Holy Mother, The Gospel readings for the Sundays in September 2021 are taken from St. Mark and are from Year B, Cycle 1. The Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time, take us through the life of Christ. This is a time of imprint deeply conversion. This is living the life of Christ. Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ upon my heart - USCCB September 5 2021 This Gospel relates the cure of a 23rd Sunday in deaf man by Jesus the wounds of Ordinary Time September 12, 2021 Peter says, “You are the Christ.” 24th Sunday in Jesus talks about His coming the Crucified. September 26, 2021 Jesus speaks against causing 26th Sunday of scandal and avoiding occasions of Ordinary Time sin. September 13 - St. John Chrysostom lived from 347- 407 AD and was a great preacher (his name means “golden-mouthed”) from Antioch. He was brought to Constantinople after 12 years of priestly service in Syria, to become the archbishop of Constantinople. In his earlier life, he spent time as a monk in the desert which eventually led to a series of stomach ailments which plagued him for the rest of his life. Although he was weak in body, his skills in preaching were powerful. To this day, his immense amount of sermons on the New Testament are often referenced by scripture scholars. His homilies often lasted up to two hours long! Throughout his time preaching in Constantinople, he developed many enemies including the empress Eudoxia, who was offended by the apostolic freedom of his discourses. He was eventually sent into exile, but in the midst of his sufferings, he found great happiness and peace. He died on his way to Pythius on September 14, 407. He is held in high honor especially in the East. 6
September Feast Days September 17 - St. Robert Bellarmine lived from 1542-1621 and was an Italian Jesuit and cardinal and an extremely important figure during the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Born as the third of ten children in Montepulciano, Italy, he was the son of Cinzia Cervini who was the niece of Pope Marcellus II. He joined the newly formed Jesuit order in 1560. Similar to St. John Chrysostom, he became famous for his sermons. He composed an exhaustive work in apologetics against the heretics of his day. Despite the fact that the vast majority of Catholics and Protestants of this time spoke to each other with such vitriol, St. Bellarmine always preached with respect and love for everyone. He was the spiritual father of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and assisted St. Francis de Sales in getting the Order of Visitation formally approved in 1610. He has left us with lots of important writings for both instruction and devotion. September 23 - St. Pius of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) lived from 1887-1968 born as Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy. He was known in his youth for taking on penances such as sleeping on stone floors. He came from a very religious family, but they were poor, so he had to miss school quite a bit in order to help work for his family. This led him to need tutoring before he could enter the Capuchin order which he desired to join at an early age. His father moved to America for work and sent money home for the tutoring. Young Francesco entered the order as a novitiate at the age of 15 taking on the name “Pio” and becoming ordained in 1910. On September 20, 1916, while he was hearing confessions, he felt pain in his hands and feet and noticed the stigmata (the wounds of Christ). The wounds smelled of rose, were a perfectly round shape, and never became infected. His popularity was a source of concern, so the Vatican restricted his activities to minimize public interaction. After an investigation into the matter, the Vatican determined it was not a fake and restored his public duties by 1934. He is famously quoted saying, “Pray, hope, and don’t worry.” He died on September 23 in 1968. His funeral in 1968 was attended by over 100,000 people. September 27 - St. Vincent de Paul lived from 1581-1660 and was born to a poor peasant family in the French village of Pouy on April 24, 1581. His first formal education was provided by the Franciscans. He did so well, he was hired to tutor the children of a nearby wealthy family. He used the money he earned teaching to continue his formal studies at the University of Toulose where he studied theology. He spent his life preaching missions to and providing relief to the poor. He even established hospitals for them. This work became his passion. He later extended his concern and ministry to convicts. The need to evangelize and assist these souls was so great and the demands beyond his own ability to meet that he founded the Ladies of Charity, a lay institute of woman, to help, as well as a religious institute of priests - the Congregation of Priests of the Mission, commonly referred to now as the Vincentians. The feast day for St. Vincent, the patron of all charitable societies, is September 27. 7

THEOLOGY CORNER Vol. 135 – September 2021 Theological Reflections by Paul Chutikorn - Director of Faith Formation “What is the Role of Parents in the Faith Education of Children?” This topic has been on my mind heavily the past couple of weeks as we begin to transition into a whole Family Formation for the 2021-2022 Religious Education year. In the previous model, parents dropped their children off for an hour-and-a-half of religious instruction, where a catechist would teach a short Catechism lesson on various topics of our faith. While this was a great way to get ahold of the children in our faith community and teach them about the tenets of our wonderful faith, there is an identifiable problem with this method — the disconnect between many parents and children in living this faith. As a result, the most common scenario is that a student comes to classes for the two required years in order to receive a sacrament, after which they will likely never return for any further instruction or faith formation. This is the pattern we are seeing, and the effect is certainly felt throughout the Church — especially in America. In light of all of this and our new rollout of A Family of Faith, I want to take a few moments to address the following question: “Isn’t it the Church’s responsibility to teach my children about the faith?” The short answer is that it is the Church’s responsibility is to play an ancillary role in the education of children, but the Church is not the primary teacher. A brief look at the Catechism on the requirements of conjugal (marital) love would show that “The fruitfulness of conjugal love extends to the fruits of the moral, spiritual, and supernatural life that parents hand on to their children by education. Parents are the principal and first educators of their children.” (CCC, 1653) The Catechism also states, quoting Lumen Gentium,“… parents are ‘by word and example’ the first heralds of the faith with regard to their children.” (CCC, 1656). In highlighting the basic nature of the domestic church, the Catechism also states that “…the home is the first school of Christian life and a school for human enrichment.” (CCC, 1657). The problem many parishes are experiencing all over America and beyond is that so many parents either do not understand this responsibility or have forgotten the utter importance of handing on the faith to their children in their homes. The negative effects that we are experiencing in the Church today with so many children falling away from the faith after high school is due, in large part, to a weak domestic church. In the traditional model of parishes providing religious education, the students are learning the importance of living faithfully as Catholics, but many are seeing either the opposite or some watered down version of this in their homes. As a result, their interest in weekly Sunday education can begin to seem less important since what they are learning is not translating to action. To be clear, this is not to say that all parents are at fault. In most cases, it is because parents themselves lack an understanding of the faith as well as an understanding of how to go about transforming the home into a well-functioning domestic church. The new Family of Faith program offers a paradigm shift as it seeks to solve these problems through a model that is actually more traditional than the “traditional” model — it is how faith education was provided in the early Church. It is structured to emphasize the parents as the primary educators, while the parish will assist in preparing the parents monthly for this role while also providing an opportunity for a monthly community gathering where parents and children come together and interact with each other through fun activities that will foster an even greater faith community. This theoretically solves the problem of the disconnect between what is being taught and what is being done. This, of course, takes some more effort from parents. But the extra thirty minutes a day will change your life and the life of your children forever. Is it worth it to you? If it is, please contact me ASAP to get registered for this amazing new journey our parish community is taking. Together, with the help of God’s grace, we can transform our lives in Christ and pave the way for a faith-filled future for our children who will then spread the good news to further generations proclaiming the Gospel that both saves and brings true peace to our lives, when lived with authenticity and love. I sincerely hope to see all of you in this program this year. The first meeting is on September 5th at 10:45am in the Auditorium. 11

All families are warmly welcomed to join A Family of Faith this fall. The goals of this program are to encourage and equip you to live and teach your children the Catholic Faith at home. With one adult meeting and one family meeting a month, this program will give you all the knowledge and tools you need to bring your children up in the faith as they experience an authentic life in Christ. This program replaces our previous K-8 Religious Education program. Sacred Heart will maintain the current Sacramental Preparation classes for First Communion and Confirmation candidates, but it is expected that all families with children in sacramental preparation, participate in the Family of Faith program. Last year, we explored the Profession of Faith. This year, we focus our attention on the Sacraments. Here are the common questions and answers that most parents have about the program: HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET? The monthly Parent Meeting will take place every first Sunday of the month at 11:15am following the Knights of Columbus Breakfast. The Community Meeting (both parents and children) will take place on the last Sunday of the month at 10:45am. DOES A FAMILY OF FAITH REPLACE FAITH FORMATION OR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES? Yes, aside from any necessary classes for sacramental preparation (i.e., First Communion/Confirmation classes). A Family of Faith is an alternative to the typical religious education class model. We believe that this program is better suited to provide true spiritual formation to the children, while being formed intellectually in the process. WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW THE FAITH VERY WELL OR EVEN KNOW HOW TO TEACH? A Family of Faith is completely ready to operate for parents, giving you the easy-to-understand content and step-by- step instructions for each activity, helping you to gain knowledge of the Faith and confidence as you teach it. The Parent Meeting provides an opportunity to learn about the lesson, and to ask any questions that may arise. SHOULDN'T THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OF CHILDREN BE LEFT TO THE PARISH? Since the current faith formation and religious education model is struggling to transform family life, and since many young people who go through faith formation are leaving the faith, we are following a new model (which is actually an ancient model) where the parish focuses on catechizing the parents in order to strengthen parent/child engagement in the Faith. This increases the likelihood that a child will receive an authentic education in the Faith and develop into a knowledgeable and practicing Catholic. Countless studies have shown that parental engagement with the child is the single most effective way to develop young people into disciples of Christ. IS THERE A LOT OF WORK INVOLVED FOR ME? MY LIFE IS ALREADY BUSY AS IT IS. No. There are two lessons to teach each month, along with a variety of family and child activities. Each lesson should take no more than 30-45 minutes to complete, and requires minimal preparation on the part of the parent. We only ask that you attend our monthly parent meeting to touch base on how things are going, and to be equipped with a basic understanding of the material to be taught. WHAT ARE THE AGE RANGES FOR WHICH THIS PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED? Because this program focuses on teaching the faith to parents and helping them make it an organic part of family life, it is perfect for parents with children of all ages. For example, a monthly feature called “Your Catholic Home” gives specific advice for ways to make the Faith a regular part of each day. The Children’s Activity Books are for children grades K-8, and features engaging activities at various grade levels. Parents can skip those activities that they believe are too elementary or too advanced for their child. DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO BE A STRONG READER? No. Although readings and written activities are offered, the Children’s Activity Book and Parent's Guide offer a wide variety of activities using numerous strategies to impart and assess knowledge that do not rely on reading or writing. HOW DOES THE PROGRAM HANDLE SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION? A Family of Faith does not treat the Sacraments as isolated events and is not designed to serve as preparation for receiving the Sacraments. Students grow in their spiritual journey through regular activities with their parents, prayer, Mass attendance, and participation in parish life. Sacred Heart uses Signs of Grace for First Communion preparation and Decision Point for Confirmation preparation. HOW WILL I KNOW MY CHILDREN ARE LEARNING? You will undoubtedly see your children learn as they memorize Scripture verses and are able to define key words of our Catholic Faith. Children will demonstrate in conversation their understanding of concepts of the Faith, and you will see them begin to live their Faith through service projects, an enriched prayer life, and a deepening relationship with Jesus Christ. The child’s desire to know, love, and serve Jesus is proof that they are learning and becoming a disciple of Christ. The Director of Faith Formation will also make time to meet with each family by the end of the year to review what they have learned and how they have developed in their domestic church. 19

The August seminar will be on the Theological Virtues. Director of Faith Formation, Paul Chutikorn will go into some detail on what the Church has taught regarding the virtues of grace: Faith, Hope, and Charity. In this seminar, you will learn how the theological virtues are gifts, how they transform us into images of Christ, and even how they cause us to become images after the Persons of the Trinity! You don’t want to miss this because it will serve as a great bridge for the October Spiritual Mission. The Mystagogy Seminar will take place in the auditorium on September 26th at either 10am or 6pm. YOUTH FAITH FORMATION Are you looking for a great Catholic program for your daughters to learn how to live a holy life and learn life skills along the way? “The Little Flowers Girls’ Club” is a Catholic club for girls Kindergarten through 8th grade. Like a scouting program, girls earn badges for the virtues they have practiced, life skills they have learned. But unlike most scouting organizations, the girls learn and earn their badges through a distinctly Catholic lens. This Catholic to the Core program relies on the stories of the saints, Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Little Flowers meetings resume this month on September 21st at 6:45pm. Kandace Earhart will be the club leader this year and is excited to keep the fun going! To register for this program, contact Paul Chutikorn in the Parish Office. Fresh off of their group hike, the cadets will resume with their handiwork achievement course. Over the next couple of months, the focus will be on automotive maintenance and repair. They will learn to locate all the essential parts under the hood of a car, how to change a tire, oil, and more! If you are a father interested in joining your son in this great faith-based program, contact Paul Chutikorn in the Parish Office. The Troops of Saint George (TSG) is a fraternal Catholic nonprofit apostolate for priests, men, and young men looking for a life of adventure coupled with virtue.
