PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE 4th Sunday of the Year C, February 3, 2019 TOGETHER WITH LOVE We have been reading the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians in our second reading for three Sundays now. The people of Corinth were a community of faithful Christians who love God and wanted to serve him. However, there were some persons in the community who thought that the gift they had were better than the gifts of others. They thought that their ministry is The Church. They even made others feel that their gifts were of less value in the church and that such gifts do not count. Paul used the image of the body to describe the community of believers. He described some of the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to different members for the good of the body of Christ, the Church (1 Corinthians 12: 28-30). He reminded the Corinthians that just as the body has many parts, so also is the church. We are all different parts of what make up the body of Christ. Paul in that reading emphasized the importance of each part and the fact that when one part hurts, the whole body suffers. Each part is to be appreciated and no part is to feel more important than the other. Today’s second reading is a continuation of last Sunday’s. For the different parts of the body to function for the good of the whole, there must be love. According to St. Paul, love is the binding force that keeps the different parts of the body together as one. They may have all the gifts but if there is no love, it is an empty gong. The motivation of our ministry must therefore be love. Love must be the reason for all our actions in the church and elsewhere. Paul gave us some attributes of love. He said: love is patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offense; and is not resentful (1Corinthians 13: 4-7). These attributes of love could all be found in Christ. We can confidently say that Jesus is patient and kind; he is never jealous; he is never boastful or conceited; he is never rude or selfish; he does not take offense and he is not resentful. As followers of Christ, can we comfortably or confidently substitute our names in place of love in the second reading of today? Can I? Well, I will say that I am a work in progress. As followers of Christ, we must get to that point on our journey of faith when we can possess all these attributes of love. This is our task for the week, months, and years ahead – to be images of God, sharing his attributes of love. Our church family must stand together and be bonded together in love. We must work together sharing our gifts as a community in love. STEPS FOR STUDENTS: The 14th Annual Steps for Students 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday February 16th at 8:00am at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Downtown Houston. This annual event supports the Cath- olic schools in the archdiocese. Funds raised through our parish will support our own St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School. I plan to run again this year. I ask for your support or you can support any other runner of our school. Visit https://www.steps4students.org/p2p/61698/felix-osasona to make your donation online. You could also register to run to support this event. Thank you for supporting Catholic education. RELEASE OF NAMES: With the list of clergy credibly accused of sexual misconduct of minors being published, what do we do? Well, the first thing is to pray for those who have been hurt by the evil actions of those clergy. There is no excuse for such depravity, and clergy should be held to the highest standard. We should help those abused with counseling, love and respect for bringing these grave offenses into the light. We also should pray for a strong outcome of the Summit of the leaders of Bishops Conferences worldwide with Pope Francis this month to address this prob- lem in the church. Our leaders can no longer be silent on this issue. As we are faced with these challenges, we must not allow the sins of a few to discourage our faith in the Church, the Bride of Christ. Our eyes must be fixed on Christ alone, the Bridegroom! Some have become bitter, discouraged and even left the Church. Please do not let the sins of a few drive you away from the graces of the sacraments. Doing so only hurts our own hearts. Some have decided to withhold their contributions to the parish or/and the archdiocese. This only hurts the work of the Church’s mission to serve the many who come to her for help. Let us rise up in a wave of great faith and holiness and show our world that sin will not conquer. Let us not give any more power to evil than it already has. Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP Pastor pastor@st-mm.com Page 4 | February 3, 2019

CHILDREN’S NEWS CCE classes are in session today, Sunday, February 3, Tuesday, February 5, and Wednesday, February 6. Visit the Elementary portion of the parish website for lots of important information and fun extras: http://www.st-mm.com/elementary. We will continue Big Idea Three: : How does Jesus teach us to live a moral life? Our topics include Care for Others/Dignity of Life; Prudence, Virtues, and Good Moral Choices. Please help your children to understand that the Commandments were given to us to help us get to Heaven, and that our conscience helps us to obey the Commandments. When we obey God, we come to know, love, and serve Him in this world for eternal happiness in the next. Breaking Open the Word for Families for The Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time By Ginger Herrington Reading 1: Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19. Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. God assures the prophet Jeremiah that he has been loved and protected by God from the time before he was born until the end of all time. We, too, are loved and protected by God. He conceived us in His heart before our parents conceived us in our mother’s wombs. This is why we fight for that most basic of human rights: the right to life. God is with us always. Believe the word He spoke through His prophet Jeremiah: I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord! Reading 2: From the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 12:31-13:13. Love never fails. St. Paul’s beautiful homage to love testifies to the strength and lasting power of love. This reading can serve as an examination of conscience for us: are we patient and kind? Are we jealous, rude, or pompous? Do we seek our own interests or do we seek to serve others? Do we rejoice over what is true and right? Or do we rejoice in the misfortunes of others? Are we quick-tempered? Do we brood over injuries? Of the three theological virtues (those oriented toward God): faith, hope, and love, the greatest of these is love. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Choose the loving option every moment of every day. Gospel: Luke 4:21-30. When the people heard Jesus speak the Truth, they were filled with fury. Jesus reads a passage from the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah foretold a Messiah who would bring glad tidings to the poor; proclaim liberty to captives; recovery of sight to the blind; and to let the oppressed go free. Think about the many miracles of Jesus during His ministry here on Earth; then hear the Truth as our Savior tells those in the synagogue: Today, this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. It can be difficult to hear the Truth when it is contrary to your expectations or desires. It can be challenging to speak the Truth to people who don’t want to hear it. We are called to listen to the Word of God and ponder it in our hearts. We have 2,000 years of Church teaching, the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, to help us to understand the Word of God; we are then called to proclaim the Truth. As God promised Jeremiah, “I am with you to deliver you!” Feast days this week: St. Agatha (martyred in the year 251; she is one of seven women remembered by name in the Canon of the Mass); St Paul Miki and 25 companions (martyrs from Japan; crucified on a hill in 1596); and St. Jose- phine Bakhita (a brutally abused slave in the Sudan who died a nun in Italy in 1947). Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP pastor@st-mm.com Page 13 | February 3, 2019
