From the Desk of Fr. Marc Reszel Lent is coming. The penitential season that annually prepares us for the Triduum and Easter Season will not be cancelled. However, Lent will be reconfigured and reimagined beginning with the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday. The 9:00am Mass on Ash Wednesday will be livestreamed and recorded for those unable to attend in person. Given the limitations to worshipping capacity, Today is celebrated as the Fifth Sunday in ashes will be distributed to students in their Ordinary Time. Annual Catholic Appeal 2021 Come follow me … and bring hope to the world Over the next two weeks St. John of the Cross Parish will be participating in the Annual Catholic Appeal which supports the mission of the archdiocese. This weekend we will hear the Cardinal’s homily at all Masses. You can also read to the Cardinal’s message on our parish website. The Appeal funds the many administrative and ministerial services that our parish relies on in the parish school, YC and high school youth ministry programs, adult formation and spirituality programs, sacramental formation, building and grounds maintenance and improvements, and provides financial and business guidance. It helps pay for the education and ongoing formation of lay ministers, deacons and priests. And especially over the last year during the Covid pandemic, the archdiocese has helped to provide important leadership and direction on worshipping and gathering safely. The Appeal also helps disadvantaged parishes and schools and supports ministries that serve and give hope to those who are struggling and living in poverty both here and around the world. For the well-being and safety of everyone, the Appeal will look different this year as we will not be collecting in-pew pledge forms. You can pick up a mail-in envelope at church exits or use the envelope from the Cardinal’s in-home mailing to make your donation. Gifts can also be made safely and simply online at annualcatholicappeal.com or via a new text-to-give option. Details can be found on the next page or on our parish website. As in the past, any donations received over our goal are returned to our parish for our use. Past rebates have been held in savings and used to retire our $1.2M To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign debt, make necessary security improvements in our school building and install a new church boiler and chiller in the Parish Center. Our Appeal rebates are an important revenue source that help parish operations when we are faced with unexpected revenue declines such as those that were experienced last fiscal year, as well as to fund future capital expenses such as new roofing on the school building and church. While the financial circumstances of some families in our parish remain uncertain because of the pandemic, for those who are able we ask for your continued generous support of our parish and the Annual Catholic Appeal. Thank you for sharing your time talent and treasure as together we answer Jesus’ call to Come, follow me … and bring hope to our world especially during these challenging times. Year of St. Joseph: Excerpt from Patris Corde Continued from last week’s bulletin … An obedient father As he had done with Mary, God revealed his saving plan In every situation, Joseph declared his own “fiat”, like to Joseph. After being warned in a dream” – now for the fourth time – “he went away to the district of Galilee. There he made his home in a town called Nazareth” (Mt 2:22-23). The evangelist Luke, for his part, tells us that Joseph undertook the long and difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be registered in his family’s town of origin in the census of the Emperor Caesar Augustus. There Jesus was born (cf. Lk 2:7) and his birth, like that of every other child, was recorded in the registry of the Empire. Saint Luke is especially concerned to tell us that Jesus’ parents observed all the prescriptions of the Law: the rites of the circumcision of Jesus, the purification of Mary after childbirth, the offering of the firstborn to God (cf. 2:21-24). Confirmation Doves As part of a beautiful tradition each year, parishioners were invited to take a white dove off a prayer tree in the church narthex. Each dove held the name of one of our Confirmation candidates. This year we invite you to pick up a dove from the table at church as you exit and ask you to pray for that student whose name is printed on the dove. Use the prayer below or one of your own. For those unable to attend Mass, over the next several weeks leading up to Confirmation, we will share the names of all of our candidates in the bulletin and ask you to pray for them. May God’s light and the gifts of the Holy Spirit shine on every path that our candidates follow. May Christ’s love guide them through all their tomorrows. And may they always seek to grow deeper in the faith they have embraced. Amen.
